An ordinary differential equation with nonlinearity of quadratic as well as cubic terms associated with variable time is derived. The derivation is based on the assumption that the deflection mode is the sum of four Legendre polynomials, and the Galerkin procedure is applied. The equation is solved by asymptotic expansion, and a first approximate solution is adopted. Unstable regions of this solution are discussed.

However, attempts at correlating the theoretical results with either experimental or simulated results (both for axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric modes of vibration) are almost completely lacking. In this paper, natural frequencies and mode shapes obtained from axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric theories of vibration of complete spherical shells and from Finite Element computer simulations of the vibrations, with and without geometrical imperfections, are presented. Modal tests reported elsewhere on commercially available, thin spherical marine floats (with imperfections) are utilized as a basis for comparison of frequencies to both the theoretical and numerical results. In addition, comparisons with 'whole field' measurements on one of the imperfect shells using dynamic holography are presented. Because of the imperfections present, 'splitting' of frequencies of non-axisymmetric modes is anticipated. Correlations of recorded natural frequencies of the spherical shells with earlier theoretical results and with finite element simulations for the first few modes are good, and the presence of the frequency splitting phenomenon is demonstrated.

In this paper, the vibrations of a spherical containment vessel undergoing elastic response are investigated. Vibration modes of containment vessels are of particular interest, as it is the superposition and interaction of different modes of response with closely spaced frequencies that has been reported to be the mechanism of 'strain growth'. First, the modal frequencies of a spherical shell for both axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric response modes are discussed, based on a sequence of papers that have appeared in the open literature. Analytical predictions are then compared with numerical simulations using ABAQUS. It is found that the numerical simulations accurately predict both the axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric modal frequencies for the complete spherical shell. Next, numerical simulations of modal frequencies for the more complex spherical containment vessel (with nozzles) are compared with the spherical shell results. Numerical simulations for the spherical containment vessel reveal that frequencies are somewhat similar to the complete spherical shell. Limited comparisons with experimentally recorded frequencies for participating modes of vessel dynamic response during high explosive containment testing are presented as well.

Without employing the usual auxiliary variables for reduction of shell motion equations introduced by Van der Neut and Berry, independent analytical solutions for middle-surface displacements are obtained and explicitly expressed in terms of associated Legendre functions. In order to gain physical insights into the free-vibration characteristics of an open nonshallow shell, theoretical calculations together with asymptotic descriptions are made of natural frequencies and mode shapes of a hemispherical shell with a free edge. Five families of natural frequencies, i.e., low Rayleigh bending, mixed bending-membrane, torsional, bending and membrane frequencies, are found. The corresponding mode shapes exhibit distinctive displacement patterns.
