These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The Awakening of the Desert: Look inside the book: 'Well, now, my boy,' replied the Captain, 'I have never cared very much for Sunday or for churches, but you must know that when we get out on the plains we can't afford to stop all our stock to starve on a desert where there is no feed or water just because it is Sunday. ... I have crossed the plains to the coast many times, and I can take a train of oxen or mules and turn them out one whole day every sixth or seventh day, free to range for twenty-four hours, and I can make this trip in less time and bring my stock through to the Pacific in better condition than any fool can who drives them even a little every day.'

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1912 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXVII The Boarding House Train THE boarding house train of the older days was not an institution peculiar to the West alone, for we know that tramp outfits afforded protection to wanderers in ancient times, and even now in the Orient and for an agreed pecuniary consideration the peripatetic traveler may plod along as best he may, or possibly ride at times, and have the dust of the train and the society and fare of the Cameleers. Although more or less familiar also with the mode of travel as seen in the early immigration to the west of Lake Michigan, I had never seen anything of its kind quite so picturesque or that in America brought together so heterogeneous a party of men, as the boarding-house train that I accompanied through the mountains in September, 1866. The time had arrived when it was hoped that our big ox train would be approaching the mountains, and desiring to meet it and assist in bringing it through the canyons, I watched for an opportunity to joinsome East bound train. The late summer and early autumn had given us time to dispose of some merchandise that reached Salt Lake earlier in the season, and I was now free to leave the city. Learning of a small mule outfit that was about to start for the Missouri River, I concluded arrangements for transportation. This transportation embraced the so-called "grub" and the conveniences of a covered wagon in which one might ride on easy roads, the expectation being that the passenger would walk up the hills or over difficult tracts. The captain of the outfit, a big, burly freighter, seemed proud to have come from Pike County, Missouri, which he stated had produced the most distinguished men whom he had ever known. Book excerpt: In 1910, sixteen-year-old Alice George and her family leave England for a new life in Morocco. A headstrong young woman, Alice is fascinated by the exotic life of Marrakesh until two years later she is abducted into the Sahara after a car accident. She is rescued by Abu, chief of his Tuareg tribe, and begins a life of freedom that she never could have imagined in corseted England. In 1917, after the tribe takes her son away from her, Alice escapes with her slave/companion. He betrays her, she becomes captive in a harem and murders a man, then escapes. She is 'found' by the Sisters of Blessed Mercy and returned home to a world completely alien to the one she had left seven years before, a world she believes cannot include her life in the Sahara. Decades later she receives a telegram announcing that Abu has died in the desert. "Who is Abu?" her husband asks. "My lover," she answers. Thus begins a seven-day journey of revelation as Alice struggles to come to terms with her life in the desert and with the fact that her greatest secret-the son she left behind-is coming at the end of the week. The story opens with the telegram, then moves back in time to recount the family's departure from England and arrival in Morocco, then forward to the opening storyline. Alice goes to stay with her sister and they finally tell each other about their lives before and after the abduction. Meanwhile her husband Martin uses his contacts as a government consultant to uncover the truth about Alice, Abu, and their son.At the end of the week Martin and Alice reunite in London and await her son, who arrives with her granddaughter.
