Others in mid-battle, soaring above smoke-and-fire filled targets or engaging in skirmishes with nearby enemy pilots. And still more, returning from the fray, their crews blessedly still alive. 75 breathtaking paintings capture in vivid detail the drama and action of air combat in World War II--the war that launched a new era in military history with its strategic use of bombers. The contributors include many of today's most noted historical artists, including Robert Bailey, Stan Stokes, Robert Taylor, Roy Grinnell, and Jim Dietz. Extensive captions offer insight into each scene, with information on the pilot, crew, and unit, while archival photographs of these brave soldiers of the air breathe life into each scene--Publisher.

Book excerpt: This illustrated, large-format book presents the U.S. Air Force Art Program's depiction of the Air Force across the service's history, starting with the birth of U.S. military aviation under the auspices of the Army. It interweaves the story of the Art Program, including features on artists and their thoughts on significant works, with the history of the birth and growth of the Air Force itself. The volume includes a foreword by Gen. Mark A. Welsh III, the current Air Force Chief of Staff, who calls the book a "celebration" that records "how the connection between Airmen and artists began, how this relationship evolved, and how artists have documented Air Force operations over the decades." This publication would make a great coffee table book. The author, Dr. Timothy R. Keck, spent his career in the Air Force History program and championed the Air Force Art Program while serving as command historian of Pacific Air Forces. He retired as the Air Force senior historian in 2012. This historic art reference work may appeaal to current airmen, veterans, and members of the general public with an interest in the history of air power, particularly as it is portrayed in Air Force. Additionally, art students and libraries with art history and military collections may also be interested in this work. Based at Tuskegee Air Base in Alabama, the 332nd Fighter Group flew their red-tailed P-40s and P-51s in North Africa and Europe. Despite their own casualties, these fighter-escorts never lost a bomber during the war -- in fact, bomber groups often requested the Tuskegee Airmen as escorts. First published as a hardcover (0-7603-0254-5), Tuskegee's Heroes is their story, told through first-person accounts, archival photos and the wonderful color paintings of Tuskegee airman Roy LaGrone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the full force of culture and convention ranged against them, women have nonetheless been taking to the air almost from the first. And because of all the obstacles they have faced, these women in aviation have had to show a rare degree of courage, ambition, and skill. Stars of the Sky celebrates these women--the wildly daring, the pioneering, and the implacably determined--and their remarkable achievements. In profiles illustrated by aviation artist Sharon Rajnus, accomplished writer and flight instructor Ann Cooper introduces readers to fifty female stars of the sky. Among these women are many firsts (first black female aviator, first female aircraft designer, first woman to fly solo around the world, first female Airline manager, and first female Thunderbolt pilot). Rajnus also profiles women who have made singular contributions, from a flight surgeon and a daredevil sky-writer to an Eskimo Bush pilot and air traffic controller, as well as record setters such as a long-distance record holder, a Hellcat test pilot, and a golden age Air Racer. The pictures and stories in Stars of the Sky bring these women, their personalities, their passion for flying, and their legend-worthy experiences to clear, colorful, and vibrant life.

Book excerpt: The Tides of War is about two men, Lenny Dawson and Frank Billups. Lenny is a teenager and Frank is his Sunday school teacher. Unusual circumstance bring them together again during WW II flying B-17 bombers. Their trials and exploits during WWII bring both to Germany after they are shot down. They pass themselves off as German citizens and are taken into the German Luftwaffe. Both hope to return to their base in England by flying away in a German plane. While in Germany both meet German women and a love story develops for both. The Luftwaffe quickly learn that they are superb pilots and they are promoted and sent to the eastern front where they engage the Russians. Both eventually fly a plane back to England before the war ends. Dawson is reassigned with his American unit and is shot down once more over Germany near the end of the war. He is put in a German prison that the Russians later capture. He is then sent to Siberia where he makes a daring escape nearly two years after his captured. Billups’ service with the Luftwaffe is discovered by the CIA and they want to charge him with treason. Only his commanding general is able to save him. After the war they return to America and both apply and receive jobs flying commercial airliners for Global Air. However, over the Caribbean Ocean they crash land in the ocean and are set adrift. They eventually land on an island that has been a secret base for German U-boats and are received warmly by the natives. The story concludes with Dawson and Billups helping the natives develop the island as a resort.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 1999, only a few weeks before the U.S. Air Force spearheaded NATO's Allied Force air campaign against Serbia, Col. C.R. Anderegg, USAF (Ret.), visited the commander of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe. Colonel Anderegg had known Gen. John Jumper since they had served together as jet forward air controllers in Southeast Asia nearly thirty years earlier. From the vantage point of 1999, they looked back to the day in February 1970, when they first controlled a laser-guided bomb strike. In this book Anderegg takes us from "glimmers of hope" like that one through other major improvements in the Air Force that came between the Vietnam War and the Gulf War. Always central in Anderegg's account of those changes are the people who made them. This is a very personal book by an officer who participated in the transformation he describes so vividly. Much of his story revolves around the Fighter Weapons School at Nellis Air Force Base (AFB), Nevada, where he served two tours as an instructor pilot specializing in guided munitions.

From China to the South Pacific, from East Berlin to Arkansas, I.C. Smith is one of the FBI’s most storied figures. This intrepid G-man has seen it all. In this riveting book about the Bureau, Smith brings a fresh, insider’s perspective on the FBI’s most well-known triumphs and failures of the past three decades. Robert Hannsen. Morris and Eva Childs. Larry Wu-Tai Chin. Aldrich Ames. Smith offers unique insights into how these monumental investigations were handled, or often mishandled, in alarming detail. He also confronts head-on the string of errors inside the FBI—in management and in the field—that directly led to the attacks of September 11th. Filled with startling new information, including more than seventy never-before-published findings, Smith tracks his incredible rise from street agent in St. Louis to special agent in charge of Arkansas—where he took on the corrupt political system that produced President Bill Clinton.
