TnE task I proposed to myself, when I undertook this work, is drawing to a close. I cannot prolong the termination without referring to incidents, in which the general reader can have little sympathy, and these I have hitherto studiously avoided; in those where perhaps the resolution to do so is not conspicuous, I have yielded to constraint in order to vary the narrative, rather than to a disposition to talk complacently of things agreeable to myself.
