Book Synopsis Sketches from My Boyhood by Justinus Kerner by : Harold B. Segel
Download or read book Sketches from My Boyhood by Justinus Kerner written by Harold B. Segel and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Swabian German Romantic poet, medical doctor, scientist, and investigator of parapsychological phenomena Justinus Kerner (1786–1862) has long been celebrated as one of the leading intellectuals of his time. His renowned study of a local clairvoyant, Die Seherin von Prevorst [The Seeress of Prevorst] (1829), was translated into English as early as 1845 by the English writer, Catherine Crowe. Encouraged by the Romantic interest in childhood, Kerner in later life wrote a book of youthful reminiscences under the title Bilderbuch aus meiner Knabenzeit [Sketches from My Boyhood] (1849). Inspired by such well-known memoirs of youth as Goethe’s Dichtung und Wahrheit [Poetry and Truth] and Jung-Stilling’s Heinrich Stillings Leben [The Life of Heinrich Stilling], Kerner’s Sketches is a much shorter, more modest account of his boyhood years in the Duchy (then Kingdom) of Württemberg. Consisting of eighty-six loosely related sketches, or vignettes, Sketches from My Boyhood is a vivid, charming, often entertaining, sometimes serious, narrative of growing up in, above all, Ludwigsburg, the site of the magnificent Ludwigsburg Palace. Although emphasizing primarily the personal facets of his early life, Kerner does not ignore the ever-present reality of the French Revolution and its impact on such German states as Württemberg. Sketches from My Boyhood merits its recognition as a gem of nineteenth-century German autobiographical writing.
Book Synopsis Nietzsche and Music by : Aysegul Durakoglu
Download or read book Nietzsche and Music written by Aysegul Durakoglu and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-24 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) was not only a philosopher who loved and wrote about music; he was also a musician, pianist, and composer. In this ground-breaking volume, philosophers, historians, musicians, and musicologists come together to explore Nietzsche’s thought and music in all its complexity. Starting from the role that music played in the formation and articulation of Nietzsche’s thought, as well as the influence that contemporary composers had on him, the essays provide an in-depth analysis of the structural and stylistic aspects of his compositions. The volume highlights the significance of music in Nietzsche’s life and looks deeply at his musical experiments which led to a new and radically different style of composition in relation with his philosophical thought. It also traces the influence that Nietzsche had on many other musicians and musical genres, from Russian composers to current rock music and heavy metal.

Book excerpt: In response to the silence that continues to shroud Austria’s historical past, Austrian literature after 1950 wants to retrace an untold history that left its marks in mental schemata and cultural clichés. The question how literature can refer to the facts silenced by a political unconscious, the question of literary reference and reality description, lies at the core of Austrian literature since the 1950’s. This book traces the development of contemporary Austrian fiction from the 1950s to the 1990s, showing how the Vienna Group’s literary reductionism led to gesture of mere pointing in happening and performance. While strongly indebted to the experimental techniques of the Vienna Group, later Austrian authors such as Thomas Bernhard, Peter Handke, Peter Rosei, and Gerhard Roth employ literary forms and extra-literary media prone to the indexical in an attempt to cut through the net of linguistic and cultural clichés, alluding to the microfascisms latent in common percepts, and indexing a reality that eludes plain description.
