Download or read book Lady Macbeth in America written by G. Smith and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-02-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lady Macbeth has haunted American history since the conflicts of Shakespeare s England spilled over into New England s real witch hunts. To reveal how Lady Macbeth entered American politics as an icon for the First Lady, this investigation focuses on the prominent actresses in the role, how they performed, and their effect on audiences anxious about the country s First Lady and her influence over the President - especially at times of war. Smith ably shows how the various Lady Macbeths have both reflected and shaped the image their contemporaries have of the ambitious political wife, producing parallels that converge dramatically in twentieth-century "witch hunts."

Book Synopsis The Glory of Being Britons by : John Bew
Download or read book The Glory of Being Britons written by John Bew and published by New Directions in Irish Histor. This book was released on 2009 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a moment when British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has excluded Ireland from his version of modern Britishness, John Bew's book could not be more timely. Covering a period of almost ninety years, Bew demonstrates how a strongly held British national identity took hold in nineteenth-century Belfast, a town which was once regarded as the centre of republicanism and rebellion in Ireland. Starting with the impact of the French Revolution - a cause of huge celebration in Belfast - this book describes how political and civic culture in the town became deeply immersed in the imagined community of the British nation after the Act of Union of 1801, allowing the author to provide a new perspective on the roots of Ulster's opposition to Home Rule. What caused this shift from 'Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity' to 'God save the Queen'? While entirely aware of the sectarian division in Ulster, Bew places these developments in the wider context of the Westminster political system and debates about the United Kingdom's 'place in the world', thus providing a more balanced and sophisticated view of the politics of nineteenth-century Belfast, arguing that it was not simply dominated by the struggle between Orange and Green. The book breaks new ground in examining how the formative 'nation-building' episodes in Britain - such as war, parliamentary reform, and social, economic and scientific advancement - played out in the unique context of Belfast and the surrounding area. Ultimately, however, it also explains how the exponents of this civic unionism struggled to make their voices heard as Britain and Ireland entered the age of mass democracy and traditional modes of identification began to reassert themselves, even before the Home Rule crisis began.

Book Synopsis The Royal Dublin Society, 1815-45 by : Kevin Bright
Download or read book The Royal Dublin Society, 1815-45 written by Kevin Bright and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period 1815-45 was seminal in the evolution of the Society into a philanthropic institution wholly independent of government. This book examines the history of the Royal Dublin Society at a time when that body was coming to terms with changes in its relationship with the state. An 18th-century foundation, the Society had both an educational and an economic development role in Ireland and founded a national museum, botanic gardens, library, and art school. Because many of its activities were developed under parliamentary patronage it was heavily dependent on government subsidies. At the same time, it insisted on asserting its independence against the encroachments of the state.
Download or read book Printed Textiles written by Linda Eaton and published by The Monacelli Press, LLC. This book was released on 2014-09-23 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Winterthur Museum’s richly illustrated history of British and American fabrics made or used from 1700–1850 is a visual reference for designers and a definitive contribution to textile studies. From slipcovers that belonged to George Washington, to bedhangings described by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Delaware’s Winterthur Museum holds some of the finest cotton and linen textiles made or used in America and Britain between 1700 and 1850. One of the fastest growing and potentially most lucrative trades in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, on the forefront of developments in science and engineering, chemistry and technology, the textile industry is a fascinating lens into international trade relations and cultural exchange over nearly two centuries. Printed Textiles is a major update to the classic text published by Winterthur in 1970—a sourcebook compiled by celebrated curator Florence Montgomery that detailed all aspects of the fabrics’ lifespan, from their design and method of manufacture to their use and exchange value. Linda Eaton, Director of Collections and Senior Curator of Textiles, updates the classic with a particular focus on furnishing fabrics—referred to as “furnitures.” Building on research that has come to light since 1970 and benefiting from the technical and scientific expertise of the conservators and scientists at Winterthur, Eaton presents a thorough and sweeping study enriched by the diverse approaches to material culture today. With hundreds of beautifully photographed samples—engagingly contextualized with iconic figures in American history including Betsy Ross and Benjamin Franklin—this significant addition to textile scholarship allows for a full appreciation of these fascinating fabrics. Printed Textiles is destined to become an essential reference for interior designers, fashion and textile design students, conservators, collectors, and anyone with an interest in the textile industry.
