Book excerpt: 'Easy fluency, conciseness, excellent arrangement of material, a gift of expression that puts even the complexities of a golf stroke into a form that looks almost simple - all of these are found in Mr Soutar's book. It was only to be expected that Mr Soutar would have a great deal of valuable information at his finger's ends on the subject of golf in Australia ... This is a book which golf players of every degree of profiency or ineptitude may study with advantage, and the explanations are so simple that the veriest duffer, after reading them, will be utterly unable to account for the regularity with which he either misss the ball altogether or misplaces the turf and the secretary's temper simultaneously.' - Sydney Daily Telegraph This book has been reproduced by the Golf Society as it is considered the most important book published on the history of golf in Australia. The Golf Society of Australia was established in 1982 and one of its objectives is to research and preserve the history of golf in Australia. The author, D.G. (Dan) Soutar was one of the first professional golfers in Sydney. He arrived from Scotland in 1903 and most of the information contained in this book was related to him by other golfers. He admits that his knowledge of early Australian golf was limited, and some of the chapters are written by other people such as the information on Victoria's golf that was written by R.A.A. Balfour-Melville, the first Secretary of Royal Melbourne Golf Club. Special thanks to Mr Ian Rennick, Past President of the Golf Society of Australia who was instrumental in making this book possible. Ian has advised that later research has discovered some errors in dates and locations. Please enjoy the read. G A Vincent A.M., President, Golf Society of Australia

Book excerpt: Ever wondered what tour pros are thinking? Every golfer out there wants to lower their scores and unlock the secret to the game. Now you can go inside the mind of a tour pro that lived, breathed, and played golf at the highest level. Learn from someone who couldn't break 80 to become the 16th best player in the world, and the only man to beat World No. 1 Tiger Woods twice in match play. Nick O'Hern was a grinder on Tour extracting every ounce of ability from what he'd been given. Proving even if you aren't the most physically gifted golfer, you can still compete with anyone if you're mentally tough. That's the secret that allowed him to forge a successful career in a sport that's one of the toughest to do so, and it's the secret he offers in these pages. What's your pre-shot routine? How do you prepare for your next round of golf? How should you practice and how do you beat first-tee nerves? These are just some of the questions he answers to bring you inside the mind of a tour pro and learn the Tour Mentality.

Book excerpt: The US Masters: the most famous tournament of all. A global TV audience of 150 million, a string of legendary winners ... and a curse for Australian golfers. From Jim Ferrier blowing a huge lead in 1950 to Greg Norman's litany of disasters over decades, the Masters constantly turned its back on any Australian who looked likely to get close to the Holy Grail. The curse grew a life of its own. Norman spent 22 years trying to win the title he craved above all others, only to be stopped cold by nerves, rotten luck and bizarre twists of fate. As a boy, Adam Scott had cried while watching Greg Norman's implosions. He became world junior champion, and a protege of Norman. Respectful and dignified, he was one of the most popular players on the US and European tours. His swing was to die for, but his putting was a nightmare. He kept falling apart in big tournaments. In 2009, when Scott's career was in free-fall - when his world ranking plummeted and his personal life was on the skids - the only two men to show faith in him were Greg Norman and the Argentinian player, Angel Cabrera. Come 2013, Scott is in the thick of an impossibly dramatic Masters. Three Australians are among those fighting for the lead. Only Scott makes it to a sudden-death playoff - against Cabrera. As darkness closes in, he has what Norman never had: one putt to win the Masters. Featuring exclusive interviews with Adam Scott, Scott's father Phil, Greg Norman and every prominent Australian golfer from British Open champions Peter Thomson and Ian Baker-Finch to Masters runner-up Jack Newton, all of whom tried and failed at Augusta, Amen is the definitive story of how Adam Scott broke the biggest hex on Australian sport.

Book excerpt: JACK HARRIS, Australian Golfer Extraordinaire is the untold story of one of Australia's sporting greats. Written in association with Jack over a two year period, it covers both his phenomenal 75 year teaching career and his lesser known but nevertheless amazing tournament record. It also gives a snapshot of Australian golfing history during the 25 years after the Second World War. The characters, the caddies, the rules, the tournaments, the mind games, the tantrums, the golfing honours, the equipment, the financial rewards and the disappointments - it's all there along with doses of humour, intrigue and controversy. Additionally, the reference pages bring to life the remarkable playing days of the most modest golfer ever to pace the fairways of all the great Australian golf courses. Whether he was competing with the superstar touring professionals of world golf or breaking course records, Jack Harris, the unassuming club professional from Melbourne, did it all. The problem is, not enough people know about his legendary achievements ... but they will now!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Phil Tresidder's writing brought to life the game of golf and its characters.' JACK NICKLAUS For several decades Phil Tresidder was considered the doyen of Australian golf writers. The pieces here, culled from both his published and unpublished work, show the astonishing versatility of his writing, and his remarkable access to the greats of the golfing world. Among the gems in Phil Tresidder on Golf are a riveting description of playing the famous Augusta course with Gary Player the morning after he became the oldest person to win the US Masters; personal glimpses into the lives and games of the golfing legends of the past Norman von Nida ('The Von'), Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Peter Thomson. As well as Tiger Woods, Ian Woosnam, Brett Ogle and a host of other present day golfers and would-be golfers. Memorable golf courses from Australia to Austria, Augusta to the Melbourne sandbelt sportsmen, showbiz eccentrics, caddies and committeemen; all come under Tresidder's shrewd but always affectionate gaze.
