Book excerpt: The concepts and the procedure developed in Task I and Task III were used to determine the response of an eleven-stage high-speed compressor to an inlet distortion of 180 deg. circumferential extent for contrasting against its performance under uniform inlet flow. Using the computed results at the inlet to and outlet of the compressor, the computed total pressure ratio and efficiency for the clean condition are determined to be 14.22 and 76.9 percent respectively. As for the distorted case, these are determined to be 10.35 and 71.8 percent respectively, showing deterioration 76.9 percent vs 71.8 percent). The physical consistency of the computed flow field was assessed as a means of demonstrating the applicability and utility of the body force representation for inlet distortion computations. Specifically the computed evolution of the distorted pattern in static pressure and total pressure from compressor inlet to exit is examined. For the eleven-stage compressor examined here, the deterioration in performance has been found to be particularly severe in the last 2 stages. This suggests that the last two stages could be redesigned to alleviate the observed deterioration thus making the compressor performance insensitive to circumferential inlet distortion. This can potentially be accomplished by first determining what should the body force distribution of the last two stages should be to achieve minimal or no deterioration in performance in the last two stages. One can then in principle proceed to determine the blade design to yield such a body force distribution. Tan, Choon-Sooi and Suder, Kenneth (Technical Monitor) Glenn Research Center

Book excerpt: The measured distribution of compressor interstage pressures and temperatures resulting from a 180 deg inlet-total-pressure distortion for a J85-13 turbojet engine is reported. Extensive inner stage instrumentation combined with stepwise rotation of the inlet distortion gave data of high circumferential resolution. The steady-state pressures and temperatures along with the amplitude, extent, and location of the distorted areas are given. Data for 80, 90, and 100 percent of rotor design speed are compared with clean (undistorted) inlet flow conditions to show pressure and temperature behavior within the compressor. Both overall and stagewise compressor performances vary only slightly when clean and distorted inlet conditions are compared. Total and static pressure distortions increase in amplitude in the first few stages of the compressor and then attenuate fairly uniformly to zero at the discharge. Total-temperature distortion induced by the pressure distortion reached a maximum amplitude by the first two stages and decayed only a little through the rest of the compressor. Distortion amplitude tended to peak in line with the screen edges, and, except for total and static pressure in the tip zone, there was little swirl in the axial direction. Debogdan, C. Book excerpt: Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of steady-state circumferential-pressure distortion on inlet flow and internal engine performance of a high-bypass-ratio turbofan engine. To measure these effects, flow-angle, static-pressure, and total-pressure instrumentation was placed between the rotatable distortion-generator assembly and the engine inlet. In addition, both static-pressure and total-pressure were recorded at the fan exit and compressor inlet and exit. Three circumferential screens were separately mounted on the rotatable assembly. For all configurations data were recorded at each of twelve 30 deg increments of assembly rotation. Experiments were conducted with fan speeds (corrected to station 2 temperature) of 80 or 90 percent of rated condition (7005 rpm) and Reynolds number indices of 0.2 or 0.5. Yaw angle increased between the distortion-generating assembly and the engine inlet. A change in Reynolds number index (RNI) has only a slight effect and a change in speed had no effect on yaw angle distribution. The flow angle was largest in the hub region of the engine inlet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a remarkable difference in the research and development regarding gas turbine technology for transportation and power generation. The former remains substantially florid and unaltered with respect to the past as the superiority of air-breathing engines compared to other technologies is by far immense. On the other hand, the world of gas turbines (GTs) for power generation is indeed characterized by completely different scenarios in so far as new challenges are coming up in the latest energy trends, where both a reduction in the use of carbon-based fuels and the raising up of renewables are becoming more and more important factors. While being considered a key technology for base-load operations for many years, modern stationary gas turbines are in fact facing the challenge to balance electricity from variable renewables with that from flexible conventional power plants. The book intends in fact to provide an updated picture as well as a perspective view of some of the abovementioned issues that characterize GT technology in the two different applications: aircraft propulsion and stationary power generation. Therefore, the target audience for it involves design, analyst, materials and maintenance engineers. Also manufacturers, researchers and scientists will benefit from the timely and accurate information provided in this volume. The book is organized into three main sections including 10 chapters overall: (i) Gas Turbine and Component Performance, (ii) Gas Turbine Combustion and (iii) Fault Detection in Systems and Materials.
