REASONABLENESS OF THE DOCTRINE OF ATONEMENT-- ITS HARMONY WITH THE VAST EXTENT OF CREATION, AND WITH THE CHARACTER OF GOD. Section I. Harmony Of The Doctrine With Reason. If there is a God who created us, if we have all sinned against hiin, and if there is reason to believe that he will call us to account for our conduct, all which principles are generally admitted, a gloomy prospect must needs present itself, sufficient indeed to render man " the slave of terror." It is not in the power of any man living who rejects the Bible, to assure us that pardon will have any place in the divine government; and however light he may make of the scripture doctrine of hell, He who calls men to account for their deeds will be at no loss how or where to punish them. But allowing that God is disposed to show mercy to the guilty, the question is, whether his doing so by or without a mediator be most consistent with what we know of fitness or propriety. /- That pardon is bestowed through a mediator in a vast variety of instances among men, cannot be denied; and that it is proper it should be so, must be evident to every thinking mind. All who are acquainted with the common affairs of life must be aware of the necessity of such proceedings, and the good effects of them upon society. It is far less humbling for an offender to be pardoned at his own request, than through the interposition of a third person; for in the one case, he may be led to think that it was his virtue and penitence which influenced the decision; whereas, in the other, he is compelled to feel his own unworthiness: and this may be one reason why the mediation of Christ is so offensive. It is no wonder, indeed, that those who deny humility to be a virtue, as Volney and many...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atonement of Christ, and the Justification of the Sinner In looking into the composition of the human mind we observe various passions and propensities; and if we inspect their operations, we shall see in each a marked aversion from the true God, and from all true religion. For example: Man loves to think, and cannot live without thinking; but he does not love to think of God; God is not in all his thoughts. Man delights in activity, is perpetually in motion, but has no heart to act for God. Men take pleasure in conversation, and are never more cheerful than when engaged in it; but if God and religion be introduced, they are usually struck dumb, and show an inclination to drop the subject. Men greatly de light in hearing and telling news but if the glorious news of the gospel be sounded in their ears, it fre quentlv 'proves as unwelcome as Paul's preaching at Athens. In fine, man feels the necessity of a God, but has no relish for the true God. There is a remarka ble instance of this in the conduct of these nations planted by the king of Assyria in the cities of Sa maria. They were consumed by wild beasts, and considered it as an expression of displeasure from the god of the land. They wished to become ao quainted with him, that they might please him. An Israelitish priest is sent to teach them the manner of the god of the land. But when he taught them the fear of Jehovah, his character and worship do not seem to have suited their taste; for each nation pre ferred the worship of its own gods. 2 Kings, 17. Book excerpt: Through his death on the cross, Christ atoned for sin and so reconciled people to God. New Testament authors drew upon a range of metaphors and motifs to describe this salvific act, and down through history Christian thinkers have tried to articulate various theories to explain the atonement. While Christ's sacrifice serves as a central tenet of the Christian faith, the mechanism of atonement--exactly how Christ effects our salvation--remains controversial and ambiguous to many Christians. In Atonement and the Death of Christ, William Lane Craig conducts an interdisciplinary investigation of this crucial Christian doctrine, drawing upon Old and New Testament studies, historical theology, and analytic philosophy. The study unfolds in three discrete parts: Craig first explores the biblical basis of atonement and unfolds the wide variety of motifs used to characterize this doctrine. Craig then highlights some of the principal alternative theories of the atonement offered by great Christian thinkers of the premodern era. Lastly, Craig's exploration delves into a constructive and innovative engagement with philosophy of law, which allows an understanding of atonement that moves beyond mystery and into the coherent mechanism of penal substitution. Along the way, Craig enters into conversation with contemporary systematic theories of atonement as he seeks to establish a position that is scripturally faithful and philosophically sound. The result is a multifaceted perspective that upholds the suffering of Christ as a substitutionary, representational, and redemptive act that satisfies divine justice. In addition, this carefully reasoned approach addresses the rich tapestry of Old Testament imagery upon which the first Christians drew to explain how the sinless Christ saved his people from the guilt of their sins.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Buchanan (1804–1870) was a Scottish minister and theologian. He joined the Free Church of Scotland in 1843, and succeeded Thomas Chalmers as professor of systematic theology at the New College of the Free Church in Edinburgh in 1847, a post he held for twenty-one years. Buchanan's magnum opus was The Doctrine of Justification, which still has great value as a classic treatment of the article by which Martin Luther says the church stands or falls. He covers biblical, systematic, and historical ground in his work, but is never far from a warm-hearted evangelical delight in the doctrines he is expounding.

Book excerpt: With the topic of justification by either the church or by God such an issue in the time of the reformation it is not surprising that some writers still find issue with it today. This book outlines a puritan view that justification puts you in a state of righteousness before God and that only God can make this change in the life and continued life of the believer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph argues that the doctrine of atonement may be presented more coherently by recognizing judgement as the principle metaphor of the reconciling work of Christ. Judgement, understood not only as condemnation but as the whole process of bringing about justice, provides the pattern to which victory, redemption, and sacrifice may be compared and to which they should be related. The first section is a study of twentieth-century British atonement theology to understand the assumptions that give rise to the difficulties in proclaiming the atonement. The second section examines Karl Barth's account of reconciliation in terms of the judgement of Jesus Christ, and its relationship to victory, redemption, and sacrifice. The proposal is made that judgement is the paradigmatic metaphor of the doctrine of atonement. The implications of this claim are then considered for the response to the work of Christ, and how repentance, baptism, Eucharist, and holiness are related to judgement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gustaf Aulen's classic work, 'Christus Victor', has long been a standard text on the atonement. Aulen applies history of ideas' methodology to historical theology in tracing the development of three views of the atonement. Aulen asserts that in traditional histories of the doctrine of the atonement only two views have usually been presented, the objective/Anselmian and the subjective/Aberlardian views. According to Aulen, however, there is another type of atonement doctrine in which Christ overcomes the hostile powers that hold humanity in subjection, at the same time that God in Christ reconciles the world to Himself. This view he calls the "classic" idea of the atonement. Because of its predominance in the New Testament, in patristic writings, and in the theology of Luther, Aulen holds that the classic type may be called the distinctively Christian idea of the atonement.
