Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atonement and the Modern Mind From two sources. Either the mind is pre occupied with a conception of the world which, whether men are conscious of it or not, forecloses all the questions which are raised by any doctrine of atonement, and makes them unmeaning; or it labours under some misconception as to what the New Tes tament actually teaches. Broadly speaking, the first of these conditions is considered in the first two chapters, and the second in the last. The title Tko Atonement and tko Modern Mind - might seem to promise a treatise, or even an elaborate system of theol ogy; but though it would cover a work of vastly larger scope than the present, it is not inappropriate to'any attempt, however humble, to help the mind in which we all live and move to reach a sympathetic comprehension of the central truth in the Christian religion. The purpose of the writer is evangelic, what ever may be said oi his method; it is to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Christian theology, atonement describes how human beings can be reconciled to God. In western Christian theology the atonement refers to the forgiving or pardoning of sin through the death and resurrection of Jesus, which made possible the reconciliation between God and his creation. Within Christianity there are, historically, three or four main theories for how such atonement might work: Ransom theory/Christus Victor (which are different, but generally considered together as Patristic or "classical," to use Gustaf Aulen's nomenclature, theories, it being argued that these were the traditional understandings of the early Church Fathers); Moral influence theory, which Aulen considered to be developed by Peter Abelard (called by him the "idealistic" view); Satisfaction theory developed by Anselm of Canterbury (called by Aulen the "scholastic" view); The penal substitution theory (which is a refinement of the Anselmian satisfaction theory developed by the Protestant Reformers, especially John Calvin, and is often treated together with the satisfaction view, giving rise to the "four main types" of atonement theories - classical or patristic, scholastic, and idealistic - spoken of by Aulen). Other theories include recapitulation theory, the "shared atonement" theory and scapegoat theory.

I trust, however, the reader will find that the argument is not weakened by its brevity. I have been induced to publish it because I believe that a plain, concise state ment of this important doctrine, together with the Scriptural basis upon which it rests, is needed. The author believes that the argument contained in the following pages is conclusive. My earnest prayer is that the publication of this modest booklet may do good; that it may bring glory and honor and praise to Him, whose precious blood constitutes the only. His mind was so active, and he was so constantly giving out fresh thoughts to stimulate others, that he left himself little space to revise and elaborate for the press. Be sides, his power was in himself quite as much as in his words. His own personality was so marked, that his presence in the pulpit or the lecture-room, at once commanded attention, and gave emphasis to what he uttered. That personal magnetism cannot be recalled though it remains to all who knew him a most vivid and precious memory. But now that he is gone, we can only read these silent pages, supplying, as best we may, the flashing eye and the thrilling voice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Atonement: And Its Historical Evolution and Religion and Modern Culture Useful for to investigate the inevitable trans formations they undergo is the safest way to criticise them objectively and scientifically. That the forms assumed by the ideas which prevail at the present time are immutable and final, is far from being the author's belief. These forms themselves are temporary. In this chain of evolution each generation has its part to perform both in thinking and in acting. The important matter is that it should contribute to both, while remaining faithful to the divine law, the consciousness of which it has achieved.
