Book excerpt: Investigations were made to determine the change in the y parameter with room temperature since an increase in y makes the orthorhombic uranium lattice more hexagonal. Intensity data were obtained for the (040), (060), (080), and (0,10,0) for approximately 100 deg C intervals using a neutron wavelength of 0.98 A. Both y and B were found to rise gradually with some flattening near 625 deg C. Calculations made on the 625 deg C data holding B constant at 1.1 and 0.8, gave y values 0.1057 and 0.1058 indicating little dependence. The room temperature y values determined by x-ray and neutron diffraction are in good agreement with previously reported values. However, the values obtained at elevated temperatures are considerably lower. (P.C.H.).

Book excerpt: A technique has been developed by which accurate lattice constants can be calculated for alpha uranium from Debye-Scherrer patterns prepared from needle specimens and has been applied to the determination of room temperature lattice constants of solid solutions of plutonium in alpha uranium. The uranium-plutonium alloy specimens were prepared by furnace cooling from 400 degrees C. The values of the lattice constants a0 and c0 were found to increase and those of b0 to decrease with increasing plutonium content.

Book excerpt: The unusual temperature dependence of the elastic moduli and other physical properties of alpha uranium near 43 deg K which have been previously reported to be correlated with changes in atomic position and with cell dimensions. The atom position parameter, y, decreases to a minimum at 43 deg K and then rapidly rises on further cooling, as shown both by x-ray and neutron data. The asub>0 and bsub>0 cell dimensions decrease to a minimum at 43 deg K and then rapidly increase, giving a large negative linear expansion coefficient in the range 43 to 18 deg K; the c0 dimension contracts on cooling to 43 deg K and decreases even more rapidly below this temperature thus giving a higher positive linear expansion coefficient in the 43 to 18 deg K range. Neutron diffraction experiments disclose the existence of additional reflections at the lower temperatures which are presumably due to a magnetic moment arrangement.
