Book excerpt: Using conventional diffusion limit analysis, we asymptotically compare three competitive time-dependent equations (the telegrapher's equation, the time-dependent Simplified P2 (SP2) equation, and the time-dependent Simplified Evcn-Parity (SEP) equation). The time-dependent SP2 equation contains higher order asymptotic approximations of the time-dependent transport equation than the other equations in a physical regime in which the time-dependent diffusion equation is the leading order approximation. In addition, we derive the multigroup modified time-dependent SP2 equation from the multigroup time-dependent transport equation by means of an asymptotic expansion in which the multigroup time-dependent diffusion equation is the leading, order approximation. Numerical comparisons of the timedependent diffusion, the telegrapher's, the time-dependent SP2, and S solutions in 2-D X-Y geometry show that, in most cases, the SP2 solutions contain most of the transport corrections for the diffusion approximation.

Book excerpt: Converting the independent variables of the transport equation to dimensionless parameters, asymptotic analyses can be performed to show that, for an important class of problems, the diffusion equation is an asymptotic limit of the transport equation. A recent paper by Larsen, McGhee, and Morel provides a broadened view of the result discussed above. It deals with the steady-state transport equation and shows that the Simplified Spherical-Harmonics (SP{sub N}) equations are robust high-order asymptotic approximations of the transport equation in a physical regime in which the conventional diffusion equation is the leading-order approximation. According to the reported numerical results for the steady-state cases, for many problems, low-order SP{sub N} equations capture most of the transport corrections to the diffusion approximation. And Larsen shows that, in nearly all cases, the SP2 results are significantly more accurate than diffusion results in the steady-state problems.

The classic asymptotic diffusion scaling of Larsen and Keller [1], along with a consistent small scaling of the terms describing the radioactive decay of isotopes, is applied to this coupled nonlinear system of equations in a medium of specified initial isotopic composition. The analysis demonstrates that to leading order the neutron transport equation limits to the standard time-dependent neutron diffusion equation with macroscopic cross sections whose number densities are determined by the standard system of ordinary differential equations, the so-called Bateman equations, describing the temporal evolution of the nuclide number densities.

Under the deterministic transport methods, the method of characteristics, MOC, is one such discretization and solution method that has been applied to large-scale problems. Although these MOC, specifically long characteristics, LC, have been thoroughly applied to discretize and solve transport problems in the spatial domain, there is a need for an equally adequate time-dependent discretization. A method has been developed that uses LC discretization of the time and space variables in solving the transport equation. This space-time long characteristic, STLC, method is a discrete ordinates method that applies LC discretization in space and time and employs a least-squares approximation of sources such as the scattering source in each cell. This method encounters the same problems that previous spatial LC methods have dealt with concerning achieving all of the following: particle conservation, exact solution along a ray, and smooth variation in reaction rate for specific problems. However, quantities that preserve conservation in each cell can also be produced with this method and compared to the non-conservative results from this method to determine the extent to which this STLC method addresses the previous problems. Results from several test problems show that this STLC method produces conservative and non-conservative solutions that are very similar for most cases and the difference between them vanishes as track spacing is refined. These quantities are also compared to the results produced from a traditional linear discontinuous spatial discretization with finite difference time discretization. It is found that this STLC method is more accurate for streaming-dominate and scattering-dominate test problems. Also, the solution from this STLC method approaches the steady-state diffusion limit solution from a traditional LD method. Through asymptotic analysis and test problems, this STLC method produces a time-dependent diffusion solution in the thick diffusive limit that is accurate to O(E) and is similar to a continuous linear FEM discretization method in space with time differencing. Application of this method in parallel looks promising, mostly due to the ray independence along which the solution is computed in this method.
