Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Death of a Nation, or the Ever Persecuted Nestorians or Assyrian Christians During a titanic struggle marking the death of nations, While the moral foundations of the world seem to be moved, it is not an easy matter to awaken interest in small com munities Which heretofore have claimed but little of the thought or concern of the public; but the tragedy enacted against the Syrian N estorians in Urumia, Persia, in proportion to their numbers and social condition, is hardly equalled, and never exceeded in his tory. It has brought baleful influence, de vastating blight, and hideous crimes in its train. No such issues have ever before confronted Christian states as those raised during this war. Following history of Assyria is designed to give some of the results attained from the translations of the Cuneiform in scriptions, which contain the records of the Assyrian empire. Prominence has been given to the incidents of the period when Assyria came in contact with Palestine, and the bearing of some of these is pointed out; but it is rather intended that the reader should compare for himself the history here given from the Assy rian with the parallel account of the Books of Kings. Beside the direct account of persons and events given in the Bible, there is a mass of evidence and illustration on manners and customs, lan guage and literature, tending to throw light on the earlier books of the Bible, which renders the study of Assyrian so important and desirable. An examination of the dates in this history will show that many of them do not agree with the authorized system of chronology in the margins of the Bible. Here I must note that, although there is a striking agreement in the order and substance of the events mentioned in both histories, there sometimes appears to be cousi derable difference as to the dates. As this is an Assyrian history, I have taken the dates as they appear to stand in the Assyrian re cords; but it must be remembered that many of the Assyrian chro nological documents are mutilated and incomplete, and that the Assyrians are not always correct in the statements of their histories. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Assyrian Life and History The results of research in the Assyrian documents may be described as a new corrimentary on the Old Testament. To use this valuable aid to Biblical study aright, we must understand its language and style, and still more the thought that underlies the expression. In other words, we must not take out fragments here and there, and use them as notes in our Bibles, but we must examine the whole body of documents, and acquaint ourselves with their writers. We must learn something definite as to the Assyrian race, with its language, religion, art, and manners, and read its connected history. Thus, and thus only, can we use its writings with advantage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Betrayal of the Assyrians I have quoted this minor case to illustrate the value Of the League of Nations paper guarantees in Iraq for the full protection Of life and property Of the Iraq minorities, and to show how impossible it is for the members of the Iraq minorities, Chaldeans and others included, to approach the League Of Nations and report the daily violations Of the paper guarantees by the Iraq Government, however grave and acute such violations may be, without exposing themselves to reprisals. The pronounced policy Of the Iraq Government clearly aims at the destruction and extinction of the Assyrian race by merging it forcibly in the body politic Of Iraq. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jonathan: A Tragedy Saul, the first King of Israel, and David, the great king, so overshadowed Jonathan, who was but a prince, that he interested the Biblical narrator mainly as a factor in the feud between the great rivals. That the situation in which he was placed was tragic, and that he displayed elevation of character, is clear; but there is lacking the wealth of detail with which his career and personality would have been developed had he been of greater political importance. For this reason I have felt that the story, as it is told in the first book of Samuel, could be elaborated with advan tage. The setting which I have wrought for it is adorned with gems of thought and expression taken from the Bible freely and at random. These and other conscious borrowings are acknowledged in the notes.
