Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his time, Thomas Hill, a British-born painter who worked extensively in the American West during the second half of the nineteenth century, earned favorable comparison with Albert Bierstadt in the East Coast press, and received highest honors for landscape painting at the Philadelphia Centennial. By the late 1860s, his monumental canvases of Yosemite commanded five thousand dollars apiece and attracted national critical acclaim. Hill is generally associated with those paintings of Yosemite and other grand landscapes and his The Driving of the Last Spike. These large-scale compositions, however, incompletely represent Thomas Hill's talents and enthusiams. Some of the artist's finest achievements are realized in smaller paintings, classified as oil sketches, of subjects as diverse as Newport, Rhode Island, Lake Tahoe in California, and the Pacific Northwest. These modest works attest to Hill's powers of observation, his abilities to render immediate descriptions of his subjects, and his enchantment with his motifs. Oil sketches - usually made on board or paper and under sixteen-by-twenty inches - comprise a significant portion of Thomas Hill's work. Spontaneously executed, they capture the artist's direct responses to nature. As a body they offer immediacy and visual delight, as well as insights into the artist's broad interests and the cultural context in which he worked. And because they represent, in many cases, the only surveying evidence of larger-scale paintings made from them, the oil sketches are key to documenting Hill's career. - excerpted from the essay by Janice T. Driesbach. -- from front cover flap.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the day it was released in 2000, Keeping a Nature Journal has struck a profound chord among professional, casual, and occasional naturalists of all ages. In response to this groundswell of enthusiasm, we have revised KEEPING A NATURE JOURNAL, updated the interior design, and created a new cover. Undoubtedly the most exciting new element in this second edition is a portfolio of 32 illustrated pages from Clare Walker Leslie's most recent journals, reproduced in full color. What makes KEEPING A NATURE JOURNAL so popular? It is inspiring and easy to use. Clare and co-author Charles Chuck E. Roth offer simple techniques to give first-time journal-keepers the confidence to go outside, observe the natural world, and sketch and write about what they see. At the same time, they motivate long-time journal-keepers to hone their powers of observation as they immerse themselves in the mysteries of the natural world. Clare and Chuck stress that the journal is a personal record of daily experience and the world around us. Nature's beauty can be observed everywhere, whether in the city, suburbs, or country.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Sketching From Nature Many students possessing a certain degree of skill in the use of the lead pencil and chalk are, for want of acquaintance with the necessary rules, entirely at a loss when attempting to commence a landscape sketch from nature; the principal difficulties they experience being, to determine Where to begin the sketch, and how much of the subject before them they ought to include within the limits of the paper. Attention to the precepts contained in the following pages, will, it is hoped, clear away these, and many other difficulties, that obstruct the essay of the sketcher. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using simple exercises, rediscover the pleasure you got from childhood drawing, before you became too self-conscious and self-critical to enjoy it. As we grow up, somehow we learn that drawing is hard and there are all sorts of rules about colour and perspective that stifle our creativity. This book is here to remind you of the joy you once found in creating, scribbling, getting something down on paper—and that it’s more about the process than the result. This accessible guide takes you by the hand, breaks down the barriers to sketching, and shows you how to build your confidence and skills to draw spontaneously, with nothing more than the things around you for inspiration. Through a series of simple exercises, you will learn how to sketch everyday items, people and places, using simple watercolour techniques to add colour to your sketchbooks.
