Book excerpt: In today’s pluralistic world, many cultures feel a shift in the relationship of people with religious traditions. A corresponding movement is a resurgence of interest in human spirituality. This Handbook presents the views of education scholars who engage these concepts every day, in a collection of essays reflecting the international state of the discipline. Out of these rises a vision for the emergence of a just and peaceful world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education and Its Failures While God remains faithful to His promises the Catholic Church can never fail; but in no age have there been wanting dangers which seemed to presage its failure. From the days of Diocletian's persecution, the "leakage" has filled the faithful with dismay and outsiders with exultation; yet historical calculations show a steady and great increase in every century. The advance of the Church at this day in numbers, in cohesion, in zeal, in up-to-date culture, is one of the marvels of a wonderful age; yet from every quarter rings the lament over the enormous "leakages" from her ranks. There is an analogy to this in God's other kingdom of Nature. The primeval forests grow in luxuriance and majesty and extent year by year, notwithstanding the countless multitudes of young shoots which appear and perish. But the analogy of Nature must not allow us to stand contented, as if it were inevitable that millions should fail to survive in the struggle for supernatural existence. It is the desire of the Almighty that not one should be lost, and He has provided that all should come to a knowledge of the truth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Religious Teaching Religious pedagogy is one of the newer branches of the science of education. Despite the fact that teaching was made central by the Founder of Christianity both in his practice and in the Great Commission to his disciples and the further fact that many of the most notable achievements of the church through the ages have been due to the faithful exercise of this central function, modern church leaders, until very recent years, have given scant attention to the development of the principles and technique of religious teaching. Rapid progress has been made during the last two decades, but much pioneer work yet remains to be done. The author offers this brief treatment as a modest contribution in a rapidly developing field. The book does not assume to be anything more than an introduction to a subject that deserves far more adequate treatment. Being constantly reminded of the limitations of teacher-training classes, particularly in the matter of time for study and the practical difficulty of completing long courses, the author has felt the necessity of brevity in the discussion of many topics that he would have preferred to treat in much greater detail. In an earlier volume (The Pupil) it was suggested that practically the whole of the teacher's task is comprehended in the term "religious nurture." The problem that engaged attention throughout the textbook was, How may we most effectively nurture the moral and religious life of the pupil? The present discussion may be considered a further study of the same general problem. In the earlier study the question constantly in mind was, What are the pupil's needs that we must meet in nurturing his moral and religious life? In our present study we continue to regard the pupil as central and keep his needs constantly before us, but the problem that chiefly engages attention is rather the process by which the religious life may be developed. Our question is, What are the means by which the teacher may most effectively nurture the pupil's moral and religious life? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education in the Church The world is not indifferent to religion; it is becoming more conscious of its spiritual needs. There is almost a religious devotion in the principal charge against the church, that it is not on to its job. This seems to mean not alone that it is inefficient, but that it does not perceive its task. That is the heart of the problem, the lack of a sufficiently clear, distinct, and definite function, one that will meet a need otherwise unmet, one that Will convince the minds, . Enlist the wills, and win the hearts of all men and women of spiritual perceptions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
