Book excerpt: Prunckun's analytically annotated edition of Henderson's 1914 "The Art of Reconnaissance" shows that not only is the art that then Major-General Sir David Henderson espoused over a century ago still relevant today, but his scientific way of thinking has been incorporated into different aspects of present-day intelligence gathering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph examines the relationship between reconnaissance and the application of operational art. The operational artist requires reconnaissance to arrange tactical actions in time, space, and purpose to achieve an overarching strategic objective effectively. The artist uses reconnaissance as a means to gain relevant information and mitigate uncertainty by identifying potential risks and opportunities yet unknown, clarifying ambiguous situations, and providing the time and space to react to unforeseen circumstances. A lack of reconnaissance minimizes the amount of available relevant information and invites surprise increasing the probability that any given tactical action will not achieve the intended object. The paper reviews the academic literature and doctrine regarding reconnaissance from 1860 through the present and evaluates the Vicksburg and Normandy campaigns to determine how reconnaissance shaped the arrangement of tactical actions in time, space, and purpose. It concludes that the operational artist requires reconnaissance to practice operational art effectively. Relevant information gathered by reconnaissance facilitates understanding and thus enhances planning and informs decision-making. The failure to utilize reconnaissance, however, leaves commanders and staffs without the relevant information necessary to make informed decisions and invites surprise.

Since the earliest recorded military history, scouting and reconnaissance have been key tools for military commanders in order to make tactical decisions. As military strategy, weapons, and equipment developed over the centuries, methods of scouting and reconnaissance evolved as well but were never discarded. This short history paints a revealing picture of the art of military scouting and reconnaissance. From the secret sciritae of the Spartans and the scouts employed by Julius Caesar to the Middle Ages, Napoleonic Wars, and modern era of scout snipers and special forces units, this volume covers the evolution of recon operations across centuries of conflict.

Book excerpt: A powerful, inventive collection from one of America's most respected poets There's a trembling inside the both of us, there's a trembling, inside us both. The territory of Reconnaissance is one where morals threaten to become merely "what the light falls through," "suffering [seems] in fact for nothing," and "all we do is maybe all we can do." In the face of this, Carl Phillips, reconsidering and unraveling what we think we know, maps out the contours of a world in revision, where truth lies captured at one moment and at the next goes free, transformed. These are poems of searing beauty, lit by hope and shadowed by it, from a poet whose work "reinstates the possibility of finding meaning in a world that is forever ready to revoke the sources of meaning in our lives" (Jonathan Farmer, Slate).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reconnaissance The sergeant leaned forward Look out, you f 001 l he said in a sharp undertone, lie down I With a start of obvious relief, the other dropped on his hands and knees. For a moment both men listened breathlessly. Then the new comer began to crawl. Half rising on one knee, the sergeant made an angry gesture of caution, then, doubling up, fell back with a groan. His companion, disregarding the signal, continued to creep up the donga and, reaching his side, sank down, dislodging a stone noisily. The wounded man's face shone livid in the darkness; seizing the other by the collar he thrust a hand over his mouth and held him still, with a tense ness more peremptory and menacing than any word. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the earliest recorded military history, scouting and reconnaissance have been key tools employed by military commanders to obtain a picture of the tactical situation and make informed decisions. Scouts known as sciritae were deployed by the Spartans and had a privileged position in their order of battle. The Spartans were so aware of the advantage their scouting operations gave them that they went to great lengths to keep them secret. As military tactics, weapons and equipment developed over the centuries, methods of scouting and reconnaissance evolved and adapted but were never discarded. This Short History provides a concise but revealing picture of the art of military scouting and reconnaissance, always remaining true to the spirit of the scout - light on their feet, taking only what they need and returning with information that can make the difference between victory and defeat. From the highly toned Spartan warriors through the scouts employed by Julius Caesar, through the middle ages to the Napoleonic Wars and the mass warfare of the modern era, this book gives you all you need to know, and nothing that you don't. Scouting and reconnaissance responsibilities are sometimes carried out by other military units. For example, the US Marines call their snipers Scout Snipers since snipers are often in a good position to gather intelligence covertly. Special forces units tasked with a particular mission also bring back valuable intelligence information. This book focuses on units whose mission is to move covertly without engaging with the enemy.
