Book excerpt: Research paper from the year 2015 in the subject Art - Photography and Film, language: English, comment: This book is written in English, German and Italian., abstract: The nude theme has always exercised a certain fascination both on artists and on the general public. With numerous pretexts, such as dance, sport, exotism and science, the photographic nude, originally having an erotic intent, became public and was being introduced "in society." The history of nude is also the history of its presentation and use, which testifies the ongoing shift of values, prejudices, taboos and transgressions relative to beauty, health, gender roles, and sexuality. The beauty of the male body has to be more considered, just like during the classic age when Greeks and Romans left us with few great examples of male nude art work. I have chosen to present male figures that can transmit beauty and emotions. This work contains photographs taken of 7 male models, with their answers to some questions about nudity and nude art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While nude women are a staple of commercial and art photography, the photographed male nude is often the target of censorship but seldom the subject of serious critical discussion. This is the first study to examine the unique interrelation between social perceptions of the nude and the medium of photography. Melody Davis focuses on the work of six artists whose photography confronts societal prohibitions. In order to understand the taboo and silence which surrounds this subject, she addresses the many social and cultural fears that inhibit the presentation and discussion of photographed male nudity. Because she deals with distinctions between the nude and the naked, the interrelational and the pornographic, the book has close connections with current debates about the impact of images and the limits of public tolerance of images of "deviance." Through the photographs of Robert Mapplethorpe, Lucas Samaras, John Coplans, George Dureau, Joel-Peter Witkin, and a film by Dusan Makavejev, the author examines how the action ideal for the male body is challenged by an artistic medium in which man becomes the spectacle, not the spectator. By presenting three of photography's genres—self-portraiture, portraits of others, and allegorical nudes—Davis is able to reveal the critical and theoretical issues which shape our understanding of photographed nudity, and, by extension, representations of gender. Author note:Melody D. Davisis an independent writer and photographer who has taught in the Fine Arts Departments of Montclair State College and State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Book excerpt: Fully Exposed is a pioneering cultural history of the photography of the male nude which sets the photographer and the model within our cultural and historical perceptions and prejudices. This second edition extends the book's coverage so that the story from the beginnings of the medium to the present day is complete. Fully Exposed is lavishly illustrated with over two hundred and fifty photographs, many of them new to this edition. Different chapters discuss how the male nude has been used by artists, the way it has been treated in the popular press,in relation to British colonialism and scientific ideology. It also discusses `private pictures' taken at home or acquired as erotic material by the private collector. A final chapter brings the book up-to-date and discusses the male nude in the nineties. The combination of art criticism and photographic essay make this an unusual and important book both for academics and the general reader.

Book excerpt: Man is a stunning collection of photographs to celebrate all that is beautiful in the male naked body. Four leading photographers - Trevor Watson, Tony Butcher, Za-Hazzanani, and Toni Catany - have contributed to this volume, each bringing an individual style to their subject, but all expressing pleasure in the physical symmetry, joyful sexuality, and quintessential maleness of their subjects. The female nude has long been accepted - even revered - in the art world and culture at large, an acceptance that the male nude has rarely enjoyed. Once the dominant ideal for the ancient Greeks and artists of the Italian Renaissance, images of the male nude have since been regarded as carrying a cultural burden. man - and the artists whose work is showcased herein - seeks to redress the balance with this superb collection of frank and honest images of the male nude for the enjoyment of all.

Book excerpt: In the pre-Stonewall era before the advent of the gay rights movement, male nude photography was kept underground. Photographers feared police confiscation, harassment, and worse. This volume uncovers the work of ten different photographers produced during this suppressive period--images hidden away for a generation in private collections and closed archives. The majority have never been published. A full range of styles is included: gleaming muscle gods shot in the physique magazine style, sun-dappled outdoor nudes from the 1960s, and artful black-and-white studio portraits by George Platt Lynes. Uncovered restores a lost chapter to the history of the male nude photograph and reintroduces more than one hundred unsung classics of male erotic photography to the world.

(Photographs of a nude male are available in this author's Nude Male Photo Study series of books; plus his Nude Male Workout series, too) Starting "nude" in this particular book; at his bare essence; helps us to understand 'being male' by using words & drawings as our method & media. Again, no photos in this book; words & drawings only. This book is a serious and artistic study which explores 'being male' what is a male physique; and more using prose and drawings - no photos. If you're looking for a male 'body parts' book, then go someplace else. Again, this is a serious book and presents an artistic study. This not a 'male-bashing' book like so many others in the 'mainstream norm.' We instead take a stand for morality, virtue & decency by asserting that being male is beautiful and good just like any human form can so be; regardless of gender & physique. Courtesy, decency and respect for all. Major differences between this & other studies is how we focus on a male's body & spirit & mind using thoughtful reason to show insights missed by other approaches in our so-called 'politically-correct' world of today. In this book we're interested in what it means to 'be male' in physique & spirit; and "for real." A study in Male Nude Etude series. Author is Dr Laurence B Wolfe; please enjoy! PS available from your bookseller are the other prose & drawings books in this series - NO PHOTOS - that introduce and discuss 'being male' masculinity, plus a methodology for this Nude Male series of books plus this author's Nude Male Workout series, too. Please consider for your collection, along with the other Nude Male books in this author's series of artistic and serious Nude Male photographic studies.

Book excerpt: The nude self-portrait is perhaps the most intimate form of photography. It delves deep into taboo territory and strips away the traditional barriers between artist and viewer. Witnessing such a private act, we may feel the queasy embarrassment of a voyeur, but we are always compelled to look further. The images cut to the core of issues of identity, sexuality, and ego– and as they reveal an essential truth about their creators they also tell us something about ourselves. Self-Exposure features more than 100 works from both established masters and up-and-coming photographers–many never before published. This groundbreaking collection traces the development of the male self-portrait from its earliest beginnings with such greats as Hippolyte Bayard, Herbert Tobias, and André Kertész, to the contemporary efforts of such artists as John Dugdale, Anthony Goicolea, and Yasumasa Morimura. Each artist takes a uniquely individual approach ranging from the shockingly perverse and aggressively erotic to the elusively self-conscious and sublimely beautiful. Complete with brief biographies of each artist, Self-Exposure is a powerful survey of this most seductive subject.

Book excerpt: Vera Friederich has long been fascinated by the history and aesthetics of art. Her candid and cleverly structured photographs of the male nude are inspired by classical antiquity. Striking and original, hauntingly erotic, the impression they leave remains long after the last page has been turned. Young, athletic, handsome, erotic, the models are nonprofessional athletes from a variety of disciplines. Friederich's photos of them are aesthetic nude portraits, dynamic motion studies, and nudes in classical, meditative, or playful poses. Like the classical sculptures she admires, these images are concerned with the tension between the static art form and the athlete in motion. A master of closeups, Friederich works in depth, moving into the surface of the body, its texture, revealing the man in his entirety yet in detail. She carves body contours with light, shaping each figure into an elegant photo sculpture. Friederich's male nudes signal a new aestheticism in photography that has won her an international reputation.
