Book excerpt: This book documents the life and work of Emma Bormann (1887-1974), a remarkable Austrian painter and printmaker. Early in her career she developed a distinctive, individual style that combined respect for the craft of woodcut with a modern sensibility and a strong artistic vision, dynamism, and energy. Bormann traveled widely in Europe and Asia from the 1920s to the end of her life. She spent the years 1939 to 1950 in China, mostly in Shanghai. Following a brief return to Europe, she lived in Tokyo, Japan and Riverside, California. Among her favorite subjects were panoramic city views, crowded streets and squares, and the interiors of theaters, opera houses, concert halls, and circuses. She exhibited frequently during her lifetime, and today her prints are in many collections, including the Albertina in Vienna, the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This book is the most comprehensive publication to date about this outstanding artist of the twentieth century.

Download or read book Baba Yaga written by Andreas Johns and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baba Yaga is a well-known witch from the folklore tradition of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. A fascinating and colorful character, she resembles witches of other traditions but is in many ways unique. Living in the forest in a hut that stands and moves on chicken legs, she travels in a mortar with a pestle and sweeps away her tracks with a broom. In some tales she tries to harm the protagonist, while in others she is helpful. This book investigates the image and ambiguity of Baba Yaga in detail and considers the meanings she has for East Slavic culture. Providing a broad survey of folktales and other sources, it is the most thorough study of Baba Yaga yet published and will be of interest to students of anthropology, comparative literature, folklore, and Slavic and East European studies.
Book Synopsis German Expressionist Painting by : Peter Selz
Download or read book German Expressionist Painting written by Peter Selz and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1957, German Expressionist Painting was the first comprehensive study of one of the most pivotal movements in the art of this century. When it was written, however, German Expressionism seemed like an eccentric manifestation far removed from what was then considered the mainstream of modern art. But as historians well know, each generation alters the concept of mainstream to encompass those aspects of the past which seem most relevant to the present. The impact of German Expressionism on the art and thought of later generations could never have been anticipated at the time of the original writing of this book. During the subsequent years an enormous body of scholarly research and an even larger number of popular books on German expressionist art has been printed. Numerous monographs and detailed studies on most of the artists exist now and countless exhibitions with accompanying catalogues have taken place. Much of this new research could have been incorporated in a revised edition and the bibliography certainly could have been greatly expanded to include the important writings which have been published in Germany, the United States and elsewhere since this book was originally issued. The author, however, was faced with the choice of reprinting the original text with only the most necessary alterations-such as updating the captions to indicate present locations of the paintings-or the preparation of a revised text and bibliography. Desirable as a revision appeared, present printing costs would have priced the paperback out of reach for students. It is for this reason that I decided to reissue the original text which stands on its own as a primary investigation of German Expressionist Painting.
