Book excerpt: "Coleridge’s Conversation Poems – The Complete Collection" features all eight of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poems dubbed ‘conversation poems’ by George McLean Harper. The poems included in the collection are The Eolian Harp (1796), Reflections on Having Left a Place of Retirement (1796), This Lime-Tree Bower My Prison (1797), Frost at Midnight (1798), Fears in Solitude (1798), The Nightingale: A Conversation Poem (1798), Dejection: An Ode (1802) and To a Gentleman (To William Wordsworth) (1817). The collection explores themes of love and marriage, human nature and external nature, faith and God, and poetic inspiration. This book is the ideal gift for lovers of English poetry and the Lake Poets, and should not be missed by those interested in Romanticism. Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 –1834) was an English poet and literary critic and is considered a founder of the Romantic movement alongside William Wordsworth and Robert Southey. His work is well-known for its reflections on nature and human relationships to each other, the world and God. Other famous examples of his work include Kubla Khan (1817) and his critical essays and lectures on William Shakespeare. Read & Co.’s Ragged Hand imprint is proud to be publishing a high-quality pocketbook as part of the Remembering Series, and hope fans of Coleridge will enjoy the complete collection of the Conversation Poems.

Book Synopsis Coleridge and Wordsworth by : Paul Magnuson
Download or read book Coleridge and Wordsworth written by Paul Magnuson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Magnuson contends that the relationship between Coleridge's and Wordsworth's poetry is so complex that a new criticism is required to trace its intricacies. This book demonstrates that their poems may be read as parts of a single evolving whole, a "dialogue" in which the works of one are responses to and rewritings of those of the other. Professor Magnuson discloses this dialogue as a joint canon, or sequence, which includes the complete early versions of poems, as well as fragments, canceled drafts, and poems in progress. He further shows that this sequence is based on lyric structure: the relations among its poems and fragments resemble those among stanzas in an ode, and individual poems take their significance from their surrounding contexts in the dialogue. Coleridge's and Wordsworth's poetic conversation arose from their recognition that their themes and styles were similar. There were, as one of Coleridge's friends said, "fears of amalgamation," and it was actually from their failed attempts to collaborate on individual works that their dialogue began. The first chapter of the book elaborates a dialogic methodology and the following chapters discuss the dialogic relationship between Wordsworth's Salisbury Plain poems and "The Ancient Mariner"; "The Ruined Cottage" and Coleridge's "Christabel"; Coleridge's Conversation Poems and Wordsworth's "Tintern Abbey"; Wordsworth's Goslar poetry of 1798, "Home at Grasmere," and Lyrical Ballads (1800); and the dejection dialogue of 1802. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) was the master impresario of English Romanticism -- an enormously erudite and tireless critic, lecturer, and polemicist who almost single-handedly created the intellectual climate in which the Romantic movement was received and understood. He was also, in poems such as 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,' 'Christabel,' and 'Kubla Khan.' the most uncanny, surreal, and startling of the great English poets.

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Coleridge written by Lucy Newlyn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-24 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Taylor Coleridge is one of the most influential, as well as one of the most enigmatic, of all Romantic figures. The possessor of a precocious talent, he dazzled contemporaries with his poetry, journalism, philosophy and oratory without ever quite living up to his early promise, or overcoming problems of dependence and drug addiction. The Cambridge Companion to Coleridge does full justice to the many facets of Coleridge's life and work. Specially commissioned essays focus on his major poems, including The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Christabel, his notebooks, and his major work of non-fiction the Biographia Literaria. Attention is given to his role as talker, journalist, critic, and philosopher, his politics, his religion, and his reputation in his own times and afterwards. A chronology and guides to further reading complete the volume, making this an indispensable guide to Coleridge and his work.
Book Synopsis Coleridge the Poet by : George Watson
Download or read book Coleridge the Poet written by George Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-17 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1966. Despite the intense interest in Coleridge in the twentieth century, this book represents the first study of Coleridge’s poetry to be published in Britain. It is also the first to be based upon the conclusion that Coleridge’s greatness as a poet is a matter of achievement rather than aspiration and to argue that his literary career was nearly half a century long, consisting of more than just well-known texts like The Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan. The author argues the formality of the romantic achievement and its success in creating whole and fully realised poems in the established literary kinds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Taylor Coleridge's 'Poems of Coleridge' is a collection of his most renowned works, showcasing his unique blend of vivid imagery, thought-provoking themes, and lyrical language. This compilation includes poems such as 'Kubla Khan,' 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,' and 'Christabel,' each of which highlights Coleridge's mastery of Romantic poetry. His use of supernatural elements, dream-like settings, and exploration of the human psyche set him apart as a key figure in the Romantic movement. Coleridge's poems invite readers to delve into complex narratives that blur the lines between reality and imagination, making his work both captivating and intellectually stimulating. His influence can be seen in the works of later poets and writers, solidifying his place in literary history. Samuel Taylor Coleridge, a prominent Romantic poet and philosopher, drew inspiration from his own struggles with addiction, spirituality, and philosophy. His introspective nature and deep contemplation of the human experience are evident in his poetry, offering readers an intimate glimpse into his psyche. Coleridge's personal struggles and philosophical inquiries influenced the profound depth and complexity of his poetry, making him a revered figure in the literary world. I highly recommend 'Poems of Coleridge' to readers interested in exploring the depths of Romantic poetry and the inner workings of a brilliant poet's mind. Coleridge's timeless works continue to resonate with audiences today, offering a rich tapestry of emotions, ideas, and imagery worth exploring.
