Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extracts From a Poem Entitled the Art of Acting: Written in Imitation of Horace's Art of Poetry I have in vain endeavoured to discover the name, or to colle& the memoirs of the author of the followir-g criticism. With this view, I applied, not only to some of the best informed, and most eminent Afton, but also to several other persons, from the nature of whose studies and pursuits, I was led to expefi the information I desired. Finding that even those persons who were most conversant with the business of the stage, were totally unacquainted both with the poem and its author; and conceiving the piece to be by no means deficient in merit, I have re published such parts of it, as fell within the scope of my original design; and will have ultimately comprised in this volume, the most approved practical rules for acting, that I have been able to colle& with some industry from the works of the most celebrated ancient and modern authors. Book Synopsis Women Writers and Old Age in Great Britain, 1750-1850 by : Devoney Looser
Download or read book Women Writers and Old Age in Great Britain, 1750-1850 written by Devoney Looser and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2008-08-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking study explores the later lives and late-life writings of more than two dozen British women authors active during the long eighteenth century. Drawing on biographical materials, literary texts, and reception histories, Devoney Looser finds that far from fading into moribund old age, female literary greats such as Anna Letitia Barbauld, Frances Burney, Maria Edgeworth, Catharine Macaulay, Hester Lynch Piozzi, and Jane Porter toiled for decades after they achieved acclaim -- despite seemingly concerted attempts by literary gatekeepers to marginalize their later contributions. Though these remarkable women wrote and published well into old age, Looser sees in their late careers the necessity of choosing among several different paths. These included receding into the background as authors of "classics," adapting to grandmotherly standards of behavior, attempting to reshape masculinized conceptions of aged wisdom, or trying to create entirely new categories for older women writers. In assessing how these writers affected and were affected by the culture in which they lived, and in examining their varied reactions to the prospect of aging, Looser constructs careful portraits of each of her Subjects and explains why many turned toward retrospection in their later works. In illuminating the powerful and often poorly recognized legacy of the British women writers who spurred a marketplace revolution in their earlier years only to find unanticipated barriers to acceptance in later life, Looser opens up new scholarly territory in the burgeoning field of feminist age studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining a wide array of ancient writings, Brent Nongbri dispels the commonly held idea that there is such a thing as ancient religion. Nongbri shows how misleading it is to speak as though religion was a concept native to pre-modern cultures.

Download or read book Chaucer's Dante written by Richard Neuse and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Neuse here explores the relationship between two great medieval epics, Dante's Divine Comedy and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. He argues that Dante's attraction for Chaucer lay not so much in the spiritual dimension of the Divine Comedy as in the human. Borrowing Bertolt Brecht's phrase "epic theater," Neuse underscores the interest of both poets in presenting, as on a stage, flesh and blood characters in which readers would recognize the authors as well as themselves. As spiritual autobiography, both poems challenge the traditional medieval mode of allegory, with its tendency to separate body and soul, matter and spirit. Thus Neuse demonstrates that Chaucer and Dante embody a humanism not generally attributed to the fourteenth century.
