Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Archery There are Grradgrinds of both sexes who may say that "my boys get enough exercise in doing the chores all the year, and as soon as spring opens they can get it behind the plow and harrow, or, later, in the hay and harvest fields; they are tired enough with the exercise of their work." As to the girls, it maybe said: "The daily routine of the house the sweeping and dusting, the table setting, and the dish-washing, give a plenty of exercise;but if they need any more they can help on washing days, and find a use for all their strength." - We would not say that the ideas implied in these answers are the rule, but that it is far too generally the case that mere work is looked upon as exercise, and that it will at all answer for or accomplish the purpose of exercise as recreation. For exercise to be beneficial it must not only be of a kind unlike the usual daily occupation, but it must have the cooperation of the mind. Mere muscular movement, that is not work, but made solely for exercise, without engaging the mind also, is of very little use. Many years ago the writer lived in the city, and in that portion of it where there were numerous (and very high-priced) schools for young ladies. In these schools a part of the regular programme was the morning and afternoon walk. These girls went out in pairs, the youngest in front and marphalled by two or more teachers. We learn from the first book of the Bible that the bow has been in use since the beginning of the world, for in it we are told that Lamech slew beasts with it. Further on, David took a sign from it from Jonathan, as appears in the first book of Kings. Again, as appears from his history, Hercules, the most mighty archer of his time, killed with it, while he was crossing the river, the giant who had robbed him of his wife. Also it was used by the archers who lived in the time of the Trojans. Similarly the book called The Art of War, says that the ancients taught their children to shoot with the bow, hold it in the left hand, and draw it with the right, of which more hereafter. After displaying a clever trick, it is the practice of some conjurers to pretend to take the spectators into their confidence, and to show them how it is done.' In such cases the audience, as a rule, is not much the wiser; but a more satisfactory result has followed from Mr. Ford's instructions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Archer's Complete Guide, or Instructions for the Use of the Long Bow In order that the novice might form a true idea of the powers and accuracy of the long-bow, we bethought us of making a long list of extraordinary shots and of high scores made at targets by modern archers, but we find that there is so much monotony in such reading that we only give a few authentic examples. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archery Rules Many things will spoil a bow which a little care and attention would prevent. Amongst the most fatal enemies to the bow are chrysals (see Glossary), which, unless noticed in time, will surely end in a fracture. A chrysal should at once be tightly lapped with fine string saturated with glue; this, if neatly done and then varnished, will interfere but little with the appearance of the bow. Care should be taken not to scratch or bruise the bow. Owhen shooting in damp weather, the bow, especially if a backed one, should be kept well wiped, and perfectly dried with a waxed cloth before putting away. A backed bow is always the better for a little lapping round each end just by the horn, which prevents the bow from breaking if bylany chance the glue is softened by damp. A bow should always be kept as dry as possible; when going to shoot at a distance, a waterproof cover is advisable. Do not unstring the bow too often while shooting once in every six double ends is quite enough, nu less there are many shooters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spalding Official Archery Guide While Spalding' s Athletic Library cannot claim that the rapid growth of athletics in this country is due to it solely, the fact cannot be denied that the books have had a great deal to do with its encouragement, by printing the official rules and instructions for playing the various games at a nominal price, within the reach of everyone, with the sole object that its series might be complete and the one place where a person could look with absolute certainty for the particular book in which he might be interested. In selecting the editors and writers for the various books, the lead ing authority in his particular line has been obtained, with the result that no collection of books on athletic subjects can compare with Spalding's Athletic Library for the prominence of the various authors and their ability to present their subjects in a thorough and practical manner. A short sketch of a few of those who have edited some of the lead ing numbers of Spalding's Athletic Library is given herewith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Witchery of Archery: A Complete Manual of Archery; With Many Chapters of Adventures by Field and Flood, and an Appendix Containing Practical Directions for the Manufacture and Use of Archery Implements I have not proposed writing a history of archery. My object has been to present, in the simplest way, some of my own adventures by field and flood, from which the reader might easily gather a comprehensive knowledge of the theory and practice of a sport which is as harmless and fascinating as it is old and honorable. It may not be amiss, however, to here sketch an outline of the rise of archery in England, the great mother of archers. It is a well-worn saying that experience is the perfect school.
