Book excerpt: The intimate relationship between global European expansion since the early modern period and the concurrent beginnings of the scientific revolution has long been acknowledged. The contributions in this volume approach the entanglement of science and cultural encounters - many of them in colonial settings - from a variety of perspectives. Historical and historiographical survey essays sketch a transcultural history of knowledge and conduct a critical dialogue between the recent academic fields of Postcolonial Studies and Science & Empire Studies; a series of case studies explores the topos of Europe's 'great inventions', the scientific exploitation of culturally unfamiliar people and objects, the representation of indigenous cultures in discourses of geographical exploration, as well as non-European scientific practices. 'Entangled Knowledges' also refers to the critical practices of scholarship: various essays investigate scholarship's own failures in self-reflexivity, arising from an uncritical appropriation of cultural stereotypes and colonial myths, of which the discourse of Orientalism in historiography and residual racialist assumptions in modern genetics serve as examples. The volume thus contributes to the study of cultural and colonial relations as well as to the history of science and scholarship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From data-rich infographics to 140 character tweets and activist cell phone photos taken at political protests, 21st century journalism is awash in new ways to report, display, and distribute the news. Computational journalism, in particular, has been the object of recent scholarly and industry attention as large datasets, powerful algorithms, and growing technological capacity at news organizations seemingly empower journalists and editors to report the news in creative ways. Can journalists use data--along with other forms of quantified information such as paper documents of figures, data visualizations, and charts and graphs--in order to produce better journalism? In this book, C.W. Anderson traces the genealogy of data journalism and its material and technological underpinnings, arguing that the use of data in news reporting is inevitably intertwined with national politics, the evolution of computable databases, and the history of professional scientific fields. It is impossible to understand journalistic uses of data, Anderson argues, without understanding the oft-contentious relationship between social science and journalism. It is also impossible to disentangle empirical forms of public truth telling without first understanding the remarkably persistent Progressive belief that the publication of empirically verifiable information will lead to a more just and prosperous world. Anderson considers various types of evidence (documents, interviews, informational graphics, surveys, databases, variables, and algorithms) and the ways these objects have been used through four different eras in American journalism (the Progressive Era, the interpretive journalism movement of the 1930s, the invention of so-called "precision journalism," and today's computational journalistic moment) to pinpoint what counts as empirical knowledge in news reporting. Ultimately the book shows how the changes in these specifically journalistic understandings of evidence can help us think through the current "digital data moment" in ways that go beyond simply journalism.

Spanish conquistadors and a small body of settlers march into the beautiful world of the Incas, destroying the villages, killing masses of peaceful-minded people by firearms, stripping temples, houses, and humans of their decorations and embellishments of gold and silver. The code of honour among European nobles does not extend to the Indian nobles. The Spanish conquerors bring with them the Holy Inquisition into the foreign country. Cristoval de Peralta, a Spanish nobleman and soldier, tries his best to protect the royal family of the Incas from utter destruction. At the behest of the King of France, Roberval is invading Canada. The cold climate of North America is not tempting to French settlers, so ambitious Roberval is compelled to enter Canada with a small army of convicts and murderers. In order to establish strict discipline among this uncontrollable mob, Roberval must employ extreme measures. Maddened by the long and exhausting voyage, he, in a momentary furious rage, takes the decision to set out his niece Marguerite, who is accompanying him to Canada, on the desolate Isle of the Demons. An awful ordeal begins for Marguerite and her companions – her friend Marie, the old servant Bastienne, and her betrothed Claude, a seemingly endless struggle for survival, a very small hope for escape or deliverance …

Book excerpt: The Crimson Conquest is an adventure tale set in the time of the Spanish conquest of Peru. Though the story has been dramatized to entertain the readers, it is filled with actual figures and events and maintains a high degree of historical accuracy. The author explores the adventures of Francisco Pizzaro, a Spanish conquistador famous for his expeditions that led to the Spanish conquest of Peru. He served as mayor of the newly established Panama City for a few years and embarked on two failed expeditions to Peru. In 1529, Pizarro got permission from the Spanish crown to conquer Peru and went on his third expedition and succeeded in it. When the coast inhabitants opposed this invasion, Pizarro moved inland and found the first Spanish settlement in Peru, San Miguel de Piura. Ultimately, he entered the Inca capital of Cuzco and finished his conquest of Peru.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A focused study on Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's cinematic contributions to the war effort, arguing for the centrality of propaganda to their work as film artists. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger are widely hailed as two of the greatest filmmakers in British cinema history. The release of their first movie, The Spy in Black, barely preceded the beginning of World War Two, and a number of their early masterworks, including The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, A Canterbury Tale, and A Matter of Life and Death, were produced in the service of the war effort. Through exploring the relationship between art and propaganda, this book shows that Powell and Pressburger saw no contradiction between their aesthetic ambitions and their cinematic war work: propaganda imperatives were highly conducive to their objectives as both commercial cinema practitioners and artists. Drawing on production materials from the archives of the British Film Institute, this book charts three phases in Powell and Pressburger's wartime career: from first-time collaborators who strive to reconcile popular cinematic forms with developing notions of what constitutes effective propaganda; to accomplished, and sometimes controversial, propagandists whose movies center upon Britain's relations with its enemies and allies; to filmmakers whose responsiveness to the propaganda requirements of the late war is matched by a focus, shared by the Ministry of Information, on what the post-war future would bring.
