Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arapaho Child Life and Its Cultural Background The purpose of the present study is to record the customs, beliefs, and traditions of the primitive Arapaho Indians of the United States as found in the development and training of the child. Childhood among the primitive Arapaho began with birth. It ended when the child was sufficiently mature to no longer need, or be subject to, parental protection and direction. They were children as long as the father and the mother supplied their needs; clothed and fed them; saved their treasures and belongings for them; cared for their horses and their ponies; gave them advice and made them obey. In fact as long as they were under the general protection of the family. A girl was considered mature after puberty. Her childhood ended then, or at least shortly afterward. She was of marriageable age after puberty. The end of a boy's childhood was not so definite. In formants thought it ended with puberty, but no one considered a boy mature then. When a boy's voice had changed - that happened when he was about 14, 15, 16, or 17 years old - he was no longer considered a child. But neither was he a man until he was about 20 years old. At 15 a boy was eligible for membership in the Stars, the second and last of the boys' societies. At 17 he was permitted to join the first of the men's societies, the Tomahawks. This art is in appearance almost altogether unrealistic, unpictorial, purely decorative. For the greater part it consists now of beadwork, which has nearly sup planted the older style of embroidery in porcupine quills, plant fibers, and perhaps beads of aboriginal manufacture. The other products of this art are objects of skin or hide which are painted with geometrical designs. On the whole the decorative, geomet ric character of Arapaho art is very marked. Almost all the lines are straight. The figures in embroidery are lines, bands, rectangles, rhombi, isosceles and rectangular triangles, figures composed of combinations of these, and circles. Four incidents only are found to agree, - the hoodwinked dancers, rolling rock, visit to the culture-hero, and bungling host. The latter, at least, is of such very wide distribution that its importance in this case may be regarded as slight. An extensive comparison of the incidents found among the Algonkins here described, with those of other tribes, such as those in the Plains, the Southwest, or the Pacific Coast, has not been made, but a few general statements may be made. The connected cycle of incidents seems to be quite clearly typical of the tribes living near the Great Lakes. We find the greater part of it among the Blackfeet, although lacking among the Arapaho and Cheyenne, showing either the longer residence of these latter tribes in the Plains, or their greater impressibility to the mythology Of the Plains type. A portion appears among the Siouan tribes, where it occurs in the Iowa and Omaha. The other disconnected tales of the culture-hero cannot, however, be regarded as very distinctive. Many of the incidents, such as the bungling host, are of very wide distribution over the whole continent; and others, although not so widely spread, still are found among a large number of tribes outside this area.
