This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antiques maintain a fascinating and magical allure. The business attracts creative, sometimes larger-than-life colourful characters. And although the boom years of the 1990s have passed, most rogues and fly-by-night dealers have fallen by the wayside. It is imperative today that a professional air is exercised to make a living. Even though involvement in the industry may be as small or large as one likes - a part-time hobbyist, collector, enthusiast, or professional dealer - various rules and regulations have emerged to help provide fair trading and credibility in this industry that sets it apart from any other retail business. The subject is so diverse that it has no beginning and no end. It can stretch one's expertise, knowledge, and entrepreneurship in every direction, which is why it so often appeals to retired professionals and ex-business people with a proven track record. Having been involved with the high-end antiques industry for 25 years, starting as a hobby and working through all the various stages, including owning/co-directing two professional businesses, the author thought it would be interesting to look back and analyse the process for others. A Beginner's Guide to Becoming an Antiques Dealer describes in concise, easy-to-read, fun terms a beginner's entry point. Most everyone will someday inherit antique or collector's items, and popular television series show the vast interest in the topic. Isn't it time you learned from the professionals?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Filled with religious fanaticism, deception, manipulation, blackmail, coercion . . . equal in intensity and depth to any Dan Brown novel." --The Book Review Crew David Greenberg may own an antiquities gallery in St. Louis, but he's no stranger to the sketchier side of the tracks filled with scam artists and gamblers. His sophisticated worldview comes in handy when he hears from an old love for the first time in twenty years. Miriam Solomon had run off to Israel with Greenberg's best friend, but now she needs the antiquities dealer's help. Said best friend, her husband, committed suicide, but beforehand, instructed her to recover an artifact: the last surviving nail from Jesus's cross. The quest piques Greenberg's curiosity as rumors of Jesus's return to Earth have started to spread. With nothing much to lose, Greenberg agrees to help--and is immediately thrust into a world of kidnapping, assassination, and smarmy televangelists. With a burly bodyguard known as God's Left Tackle at his side, Greenberg heads to Israel and uncovers an international conspiracy--a toxic cocktail of cutting-edge science, human achievement, and greed. The Second Coming just may be Greenberg's last hurrah. "History, science and mystery-lovers alike will devour Ed Protzel's The Antiquities Dealer. It's a globetrotting thrill ride with a unique cast of characters who navigate intense action sequences, confounding puzzles and supremely high stakes." --Rob Samborn, author of The Prisoner of Paradise "[A] deep story of religion, evolution, and sci-fi. There is no gentle lead-in, we dive straight into the story at the start and we're off and running on a journey to find what seems to be impossible." --Anne-Marie Reynolds, Readers' Favorite (5 Stars)

This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than the customary focus on the activities of individual collectors, The Emergence of the Antique and Curiosity Dealer in Britain 1815–1850: The Commodification of Historical Objects illuminates the less-studied roles played by dealers in the nineteenthcentury antique and curiosity markets. Set against the recent ‘art market turn’ in scholarly literature, this volume examines the role, activities, agency and influence of antique and curiosity dealers as they emerged in the opening decades of the nineteenth century. This study begins at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, when dealers began their wholesale importations of historical objects; it closes during the 1850s, after which the trade became increasingly specialised, reflecting the rise of historical museums such as the South Kensington Museum (V&A). Focusing on the archive of the early nineteenth-century London dealer John Coleman Isaac (c.1803–1887), as well as drawing on a wide range of other archival and contextual material, Mark Westgarth considers the emergence of the dealer in relation to a broad historical and cultural landscape. The emergence of the antique and curiosity dealer was part of the rapid economic, social, political and cultural change of early nineteenth-century Britain, centred around ideas of antiquarianism, the commercialisation of culture and a distinctive and evolving interest in historical objects. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, histories of collecting, museum and heritage studies and nineteenth-century culture.

Book excerpt: A “thrilling, well-researched” account of years of scandal at the prestigious Getty Museum (Ulrich Boser, author of The Gardner Heist). In recent years, several of America’s leading art museums have voluntarily given up their finest pieces of classical art to the governments of Italy and Greece. Why would they be moved to such unheard-of generosity? The answer lies at the Getty, one of the world’s richest and most troubled museums, and scandalous revelations that it had been buying looted antiquities for decades. Drawing on a trove of confidential museum records and candid interviews, these two journalists give us a fly-on-the-wall account of the inner workings of a world-class museum, and tell a story of outlandish characters and bad behavior that could come straight from the pages of a thriller. “In an authoritative account, two reporters who led a Los Angeles Times investigation reveal the details of the Getty Museum’s illicit purchases, from smugglers and fences, of looted Greek and Roman antiquities. . . . The authors offer an excellent recap of the museum’s misdeeds, brimming with tasty details of the scandal that motivated several of America’s leading art museums to voluntarily return to Italy and Greece some 100 classical antiquities worth more than half a billion dollars.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review “An astonishing and penetrating look into a veiled world where beauty and art are in constant competition with greed and hypocrisy. This engaging book will cast a fresh light on many of those gleaming objects you see in art museums.” —Jonathan Harr, author of The Lost Painting

Book excerpt: Nothing ever happens in Wheeling, West Virginia, and that's just how Franny Woodling likes it. She enjoys managing Johnson's Antiques and Refinishing Store and spending time with her friends and coworkers, Davy and Belle. After serving twenty years in the US Navy, all Franny wants now is a simple, quiet life. Then, a local man is killed on his way back from an antiques auction. Was he killed for the expensive item he had just bought? That motive seems even more likely after someone steals the keys from Franny's home and breaks into Johnson's. A beautiful Chippendale chest is stolen, much to the anger of the owner's son, Michael Johnson. Franny knows that Michael has a checkered past-and a bitter rivalry with another dealer in the area. Could he have something to do with the recent murder? When yet another crime occurs, FBI agent Ned Raines comes to investigate, and Franny can't help but admire his integrity-and kindness. That won't stop her from snooping around on her own, however. The attacks are hitting closer and closer to home, and she will do anything to protect her friends and her community from a cunning murderer.
