McClellan and the Army of the Potomac not only did not capture Richmond or disable the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, but were forced back from the furthest point of their advance. Though they inflicted heavy loss upon the enemy, they suffered heavy losses themselves, in men, guns, and property of all kinds. The last serious fighting they did in the Peninsular campaign was at Malvern Hill, on July 1st, and no further events of importance took place in that region. The army was withdrawn from the Peninsula, under the orders of the Government, in the following month of August. Whether McClellan himself had failed, and whether he was not in a better position for offensive operations when he was withdrawn than he had ever occupied elsewhere, is an interesting question, but one which does not fall within the scheme of this volume to discuss. She furnished a company of men for the Revolutionary War, one company for the War of 1812, and from a population of two full companies to the Union army during the Civil War. This street scene shows as an object of special interest the large building to the left in which General Lee held Council with his officers on the afternoon of Sep tember 17. 1862. The town furnished about a dozen soldiers to the Spanish American War, and about 60 from the town and district in the World War, and soldiers to all wars. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North and the South at Antietam and Gettysburg The first battle of Bull Run, fought on July 21, 1861, was in response to the urgent demand of the North that something should be done; that a move should be made toward the accomplishment of the object for which Mr. Lincoln had called out the militia "of the several States of the Union to the aggregate number of seventy-five thousand men. The first service assigned to the forces hereby called forth will probably be to repossess the forts, places and property which have been seized from the Union." The men came in response to this call, for the North was the party making it and Mr. Lincoln was the herald of the proclamation. There was an expectancy in the men who came, and in the communities from which they came, that they would at once "repossess the forts, places and property which have been seized from the Union." This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulitzer Prize–winning author John Matteson illuminates three harrowing months of the Civil War and their enduring legacy for America. December 1862 drove the United States toward a breaking point. The Battle of Fredericksburg shattered Union forces and Northern confidence. As Abraham Lincoln’s government threatened to fracture, this critical moment also tested five extraordinary individuals whose lives reflect the soul of a nation. The changes they underwent led to profound repercussions in the country’s law, literature, politics, and popular mythology. Taken together, their stories offer a striking restatement of what it means to be American. Guided by patriotism, driven by desire, all five moved toward singular destinies. A young Harvard intellectual steeped in courageous ideals, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. confronted grave challenges to his concept of duty. The one-eyed army chaplain Arthur Fuller pitted his frail body against the evils of slavery. Walt Whitman, a gay Brooklyn poet condemned by the guardians of propriety, and Louisa May Alcott, a struggling writer seeking an authentic voice and her father’s admiration, tended soldiers’ wracked bodies as nurses. On the other side of the national schism, John Pelham, a West Point cadet from Alabama, achieved a unique excellence in artillery tactics as he served a doomed and misbegotten cause. A Worse Place Than Hell brings together the prodigious forces of war with the intimacy of individual lives. Matteson interweaves the historic and the personal in a work as beautiful as it is powerful.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chancellorsville and Gettysburg Richelieu once exclaimed, upon giving away a high ap pointment: Now I have made one ingrate and a thousand enemies. Every one who /writes the history of the Great Rebellion will often have occasion to reiterate the state ment for the military critic must necessarily describe facts which imply praise or censure. Those who have contributed to great successes think much more might have been said on the subject, and those who have caused reverses and de feats are bitter in their denunciations. Nevertheless, the history of the war should be written before the facts have faded from the memory of living men, and have become mere matters of tradition. In a narrative of this kind, resting upon a great number of voluminous details, I cannot hope to have wholly escaped error, and wherever I have misconceived or misstated a fact.
