Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the Companion Workbook to Kelley Baker's acclaimed The Angry Filmmaker Survival Guide Part One: Making The Extreme No Budget Film. It consists of filmmaking tips and hints to keep in mind during all aspects of making your movie. It contains a sample short film script (All The Important Things by William Akers & Mark Cabus), and practical exercises as you prepare to make either a short film or a feature. These exercises include numbering scenes, breaking down a script, breaking out props and finding locations. You'll have to figure out a production schedule and a budget. The book includes copies of forms that are used in the business to assist you and a Glossary of film terms.Sample Tips include: 6) Show your screenplays to people whose opinion you trust. Give out short questionnaires with your screenplays, including specific things that you are concerned about. You get more specific feedback when you outline what it is you're looking for, and it's always nice to have written feedback that you can refer to later.18) When you are scheduling your shoot never put the final scene, big climactic scenes, or any love scenes early in your schedule if you can avoid it. Your cast and crew are still getting to know how each other work, and you haven't set up a good working pace yet.30) Cast a wide range of actors, especially age-wise. The more diverse your cast is, the more an audience will think they're watching a "real" movie. If people think they're watching a twenty-something production, they're going to take it less seriously. Have actors from all walks of life in various roles. A film festival judge told me he can usually tell the age of a director by the cast. It's something to think about.71) When people see something that's shot on digital and they comment on how good it looks, it's usually because it's well lit. I would rather take an extra hour at the beginning of each scene to light the whole thing, than to light just what I need for the master, and then relight for each medium shot or close-up. The lighting of each individual shot can eat up hours on the set when you add it all together. When you think about it, lighting the whole set makes more sense, if you are using the entire set.88) After a take, if you want performance changes go up to your actors and quietly talk to them. Don't shout it out. The discussions you have with any actor to get a performance should be private. I see commercial directors and amateurs shout out directions to actors from a distance. They treat the cast like just another prop. They could get better performances if they took a little extra time and showed the actors some respect. As the director, you are going to want an actor to dig down deep inside and to go to a place where they can make that character become whole. Keep your conversations private. What others are saying about The Angry Filmmaker Survival Guide Part One: Making The Extreme No Budget Film. (The companion to this workbook.) "Read this book and you will not only SURVIVE but you will SUCCEED. One of the best books on making your way through the independent filmmaking jungle with justifiably-angry filmmaker Kelley Baker as your top-notch guide: Funny, profane and committed to telling the unblemished truth. Don't make your next movie until you've read this terrific book."John GaspardAuthor, "Digital Filmmaking 101" and "Fast, Cheap and Under Control"This is a great book, written by an impassioned filmmaker who also happens to be a teacher of the first magnitude. An incredibly rare combination. Profit from your luck at having stumbled on this gem. Do yourself a favor; listen to what Kelley Baker has to say. William M. Book excerpt: Motion picture audio is one of the least understood parts of filmmaking and is neglected by many film students and filmmakers alike. It's boring, scary, too technical and not considered important by most filmmakers. Until they get into the editing room and realize that by not paying attention to audio earlier they are screwed. Over the years tons of false information has spread through the independent film world, and most students and filmmakers don't want to deal with sound. If they do it is usually done incorrectly through ignorance and at a huge financial expense. This book is intended to shatter the myths and mysteries around film audio and give both students and experienced filmmakers the knowledge and tools so that their films will sound like they have come from the Hollywood studios without huge Hollywood budgets. I have assembled a lineup of some pretty amazing people in all areas of audio production for film and television. This group consists of location recordists, sound designers, picture editors, sound editors, re-recording mixers, and post-production supervisors. This all-star cast has won Oscars and Emmys in addition to awards from various film industries worldwide. In the book's interviews, Gary Rydstrom, Tom Johnson, Jim LeBrecht, Ron Eng, Harry B Miller III, Peter Kurland, Lee Haxall, Ken Karman, David A. Cohen and a host of others discuss their methods and secrets. Sound is an excellent carrier of emotion. And film is about emotion. - Gary Rydstrom, sound designer - Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park (winner of 7 Academy Awards) Sound is NOT the enemy! - Lee Haxall, editor Crazy Stupid Love I'm capturing a performance, and that performance is only going to happen one time the way they want it, in the environment, with everybody in the mood. - Peter Kurland, location recordist - No Country For Old Men In my mind, dialog is king, if you can't understand what they're saying then the movie is a waste of time. - David A. Cohen, dialog editor - Lost In Translation A good dialog editor can figure out a way to make nearly every line of dialog usable. Milly Iatrou, dialog editor - Walk The Line I would rather see no music than music used improperly. - Ken Karman, music editor - Forrest Gump We're like the ugly evil stepchildren in the basement. - Jana Vance, foley artist - Toy Story When I look at a film or look at a script I think of what I'm gonna need to make that world. Jane Tattersall - sound effects editor - Naked Lunch I like off beat stuff, weird sounding films and subtle sound tracks as compared to bombastic. - Ron Eng, supervising sound editor - Mulholland Drive Sound is kind of invisible, but when it's wrong we know it immediately. - Jim LeBrecht, sound designer - The Singing Detective Good sound goes unnoticed, bad sound ruins a film. - Dan Olmstead, re-recording mixer - Cecil B. Demented The rule of thumb for good sound is: does it tell or promote the emotional content of the scene, does it support and/or reveal the story. - Tom Johnson, re-recording mixer - Alice In Wonderland (winner of 2 Academy Awards) If you want to see what the future of storytelling looks like then check out Kelley Baker. Brian David Johnson, Futurist, filmmaker, author If you read only one book on sound, this is the one, and, after you've read it, you'll never, ever, ever say, "We'll fix it in post." William M. It consists of filmmaking tips and hints to keep in mind during all aspects of doing sound when you're making your movie. The Exercises in this workbook include: recording different types of sound FX on location, hearing the difference between a boom mic and a lavalier, rehearsing moving shots, creating your own Sound Library, and editing sound effects. The book includes copies of forms that are used in the business to assist you (Location Recording and ADR Logs) and a Glossary of film terms.Sample Tips include: 8.) When shooting digital for a feature, you need a separate audio recorder. With film, you have to keep audio separate. Film cameras don't record sound. Most sound heads on video cameras are adequate for corporate videos, documentaries (if you're a one-person crew), and on small shoots. Camera manufacturers are notorious for using less expensive electronics in the audio of their cameras. I would NEVER use them on a feature.24.) Expect your gear to fail. Be ready to find an alternative. When it comes to equipment Murphy's Law rules and paranoia is your best weapon for survival. Always carry extra mics, and a Zoom recorder as backup. It's inexpensive and can save your ass if your main recorder dies.33.) When possible do wild lines on the set if you think there might be audio issues. Most of the time wild lines from the set work better than ADR to replace a line within a scene that has a bump, clothing rustle, generator noise, or a million other things that occur on location. (Also record offending noise on location: AC that cycles on/off, etc. Post can use this to remove later.)50.) I hate the sentence, "We'll fix it in editing, post, the mix." whatever. If you spend a little more time on the set and get it right the first time, you don't have to worry about wasting time and money on an inferior fix later on.51.) No matter how long you work on some thing in post-production, it will always bother you.72.) In live-action films you're enhancing the total sound experience. Foley tends to be used more in close ups and intimate shots or where the director wants somebody to stand out in a crowd. You can hear that person walking by, or the rustling of a jacket as he sits down into a leather chair or takes his cigarette and lights it. You're selling that character in a more intimate way, as opposed to larger effects, ambient sounds, dialogue, or music. What others are saying about The Angry Filmmaker Survival Guide Part Two: Sound Conversations With (un)Sound People. (The companion to this workbook.) "Kelley Baker knows sound. He should - he's a filmmaker and a former Hollywood sound designer. And he knows what all filmmakers should: that good sound is what distinguishes a cheaply made film from a film that actually appears to be cheap. Whether you're a student or a seasoned filmmaker, you need to read this book and learn the lessons of good sound that Kelley has accumulated."Chris Hansen, Writer/Director, Head of the Film Program at Baylor University"Picture, Picture, Picture is all most new filmmakers focus on. It's not until post that they realize they should have paid better attention to sound. I'm all for learning from ones mistakes, but bad sound is one mistake that can be easily avoided and Kelley Baker makes that very clear. You can't afford not to read his books if you are serious about filmmaking."Patrick Winters, Filmmaker & Film Instructor at Ithaca College"Remember, the only people who truly care about sound, is the audience."Scott Szabo, Composer & Sound Designer To get the most out of this Workbook use it in conjunction with The Angry Filmmaker Survival Guide Part Two: Sound Conversations With (un)Sound People. Book excerpt: The must-have guide to traditional, emerging and creative TV funding models that are being developed and exploited by social media-savvy documentary filmmakers. Each chapter covers a different form of funding and combines advice from industry insiders - producers, buyers, specialist media agencies and corporate funding bodies - and entertaining case studies that illustrate the benefits and pitfalls of each method. With practical tips, case studies and advice it reveals what grantors, brands and NGOs are looking for in a pitch (they all have different needs and expectations), and the cultural differences that can trip up the unwary producer. Funding examples range from blue-chip TV documentaries, such as Planet Earth, which was co-funded by the BBC, Discovery NHK and CBC to The TV Book Club (More 4), which is funded by Specsavers opticians; to Lemonade Movie, which harnessed the power of Twitter to source free equipment and post-production resources. Readers will discover: the difference between co-productions, pre-sales and acquisitions; how to develop and pitch advertiser funded programming; the new rules on product placement; where to hunt for foundation and grant funding and how to fill in those fiendish application forms; the power of crowd-funding and how to harness the internet; how to sniff out grants and funds held in non-film focused organisations such as the Wellcome Trust; why corporations are keen to fund your documentary and how to get them to part with their money without giving up your editorial control.

If you are interested in science or fascinated with the future then science fiction is where you explore new ideas and let your dreams and nightmares duke it out on the safety of the page or screen. But what if we could use science fiction to do more than that? What if we could use science fiction based on science fact to not only imagine our future but develop new technologies and products? What if we could use stories, movies and comics as a kind of tool to explore the real world implications and uses of future technologies today? Science Fiction Prototyping is a practical guide to using fiction as a way to imagine our future in a whole new way. Filled with history, real world examples and conversations with experts like best selling science fiction author Cory Doctorow, senior editor at Dark Horse Comics Chris Warner and Hollywood science expert Sidney Perkowitz, Science Fiction Prototyping will give you the tools you need to begin designing the future with science fiction. The future is Brian David Johnson's business. As a futurist at Intel Corporation, his charter is to develop an actionable vision for computing in 2021. His work is called "future casting"-using ethnographic field studies, technology research, trend data, and even science fiction to create a pragmatic vision of consumers and computing. Johnson has been pioneering development in artificial intelligence, robotics, and reinventing TV. He speaks and writes extensively about future technologies in articles and scientific papers as well as science fiction short stories and novels (Fake Plastic Love and Screen Future: The Future of Entertainment, Computing and the Devices We Love). He has directed two feature films and is an illustrator and commissioned painter. Table of Contents: Preface / Foreword / Epilogue / Dedication / Acknowledgments / 1. The Future Is in Your Hands / 2. Book excerpt: A chilling exposé of the international effort to minimize the health and environmental consequences of nuclear radiation in the wake of Chernobyl. Dear Comrades! Since the accident at the Chernobyl power plant, there has been a detailed analysis of the radioactivity of the food and territory of your population point. The results show that living and working in your village will cause no harm to adults or children. So began a pamphlet issued by the Ukrainian Ministry of Health—which, despite its optimistic beginnings, went on to warn its readers against consuming local milk, berries, or mushrooms, or going into the surrounding forest. This was only one of many misleading bureaucratic manuals that, with apparent good intentions, seriously underestimated the far-reaching consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe. After 1991, international organizations from the Red Cross to Greenpeace sought to help the victims, yet found themselves stymied by post-Soviet political circumstances they did not understand. International diplomats and scientists allied to the nuclear industry evaded or denied the fact of a wide-scale public health disaster caused by radiation exposure. Efforts to spin the story about Chernobyl were largely successful; the official death toll ranges between thirty-one and fifty-four people. In reality, radiation exposure from the disaster caused between 35,000 and 150,000 deaths in Ukraine alone. No major international study tallied the damage, leaving Japanese leaders to repeat many of the same mistakes after the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011. Drawing on a decade of archival research and on-the-ground interviews in Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus, Kate Brown unveils the full breadth of the devastation and the whitewash that followed. Her findings make clear the irreversible impact of man-made radioactivity on every living thing; and hauntingly, they force us to confront the untold legacy of decades of weapons-testing and other nuclear incidents, and the fact that we are emerging into a future for which the survival manual has yet to be written.

Book excerpt: This book of parent-to-parent advice aims to encourage, support, and bolster the morale of one of music's most important back-up sections: music parents. Within these pages, more than 150 veteran music parents contribute their experiences, reflections, warnings, and helpful suggestions for how to walk the music-parenting tightrope: how to be supportive but not overbearing, and how to encourage excellence without becoming bogged down in frustration. Among those offering advice are the parents of several top musicians, including the mother of violinist Joshua Bell, the father of trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, the parents of cellist Alisa Weilerstein, and those of violinist Anne Akiko Meyers. The book also features advice from music educators and more than forty professional musicians, including Paula Robison, Sarah Chang, Anthony McGill, Jennifer Koh, Jonathan Biss, Toyin Spellman-Diaz, Marin Alsop, Christian McBride, Miguel Zenón, Stephanie Blythe, Lawrence Brownlee, Kelli O'Hara, as well as Joshua Bell, Alisa Weilerstein, Wynton Marsalis, Anne Akiko Meyers, and others. The topics they discuss span a wide range of issues faced by the parents of both instrumentalists and singers, from how to get started and encourage effective practice habits, to how to weather the rough spots, cope with the cost of music training, deal with college and career concerns, and help young musicians discover the role that music can play in their lives. The parents who speak here reach a unanimous and overwhelming conclusion that music parenting is well worth the effort, and the experiences that come with it - from sitting in on early lessons and watching their kids perform onstage to tagging along at music conventions as their youngsters try out instruments at exhibitors' booths - enrich family life with a unique joy in music.

Fierce storms, terrifying fog, icy roads, uncontrollable laughter, and oftentimes far too much alcohol. Without that big old dog I'm not sure how I would've survived." - Kelley Baker With no distributor interested in his independent films, Kelley Baker, the Angry Filmmaker, ripped a page out of the punk rock handbook and went looking for his audience in a used minivan with his faithful 120 pound Chocolate Lab, Moses. Every fall and spring they traveled the country showing his films at art house theaters, film festivals, colleges, and biker bars. Logging over two hundred thousand miles, they encountered a collection of Fellini-esque characters including two hyper-intellectual pro wrestlers in West Virginia, a lying Chicago hotel desk clerk who cost Kelley his home, civil rights workers knocking back rum at Hank Williams' grave, and a way overzealous drug sniffing border patrol dog outside El Paso, Texas. Kelley gave an audio workshop for employees of a porn channel, got yelled at in a haunted bar in Memphis, was asked to leave the Prayer Tower at Oral Roberts University, and drove twenty-four hundred miles in three days so he wouldn't miss his daughter's choir recital. Moses swam in two oceans, fifteen lakes, and enthusiastically marked thousands of spots from sea to shining sea. At the end of it all they found a lot more than an audience.
