Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Four Plays of Euripides: Andromache; Helen; Heracles; Orestes The texts of Euripides to which I refer in this volume are the following. For the Andromache and the Heracles, the only two of the four plays which are included in the published volumes of Professor Gilbert Murray, I have used his edition. For the Helen I use the text of W. Dindorf in the 1869 edition (with apparatus criticus) of the Poetae Scenici. For the Orestes I refer to the edition (and commentary) of Mr Wedd. I have used also the commentary of Mr Hyslop on the Andromache, those of Professor von Wilamowitz-Mollendorff and Mr Blakeney on the Heracles, those of Paley on all the four plays, and others. To the commentary of Mr Wedd I am largely indebted. It has been my intention to notice doubts, whether of text or interpretation, which seem material to the purpose of my citation; if in any case I have not done so, it is by inadvertence. But doubts of either kind, when they are not for my purpose material, I do not notice. I cite frequently the translation of Euripides in verse by Mr A. S. Way, and appreciate highly the advantage of being able to adduce a version so faithful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Euripides, Vol. 2 of 4: With an English Translation; Electra; Orestes; Iphigeneia in Taurica; Andromache; Cyclops In his seventy-third year he left Athens and his clamorous enemies, to be an honoured guest at the court of the king of Macedon. There, unharassed by the malicious vexations, the political unrest, and the now imminent perils of Athens, he wrote with a freedom, a rapidity, a depth and fervour of thought, and a splendour of diction, which even he had scarcely attained before. He died in 406 no, and, in a revulsion of repent ant admiration and love, all Athens, following Sophocles' example, put on mourning for him. Four plays, which were part of the fruits of his Macedonian leisure, were represented at Athens shortly after his death, and were crowned by acclamation with the first prize, in spite of the attempt of Aristophanes, in his comedy of The Frogs, a few months before, to belittle his genius. Book excerpt: Based on the conviction that only translators who write poetry themselves can properly re-create the celebrated and timeless tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, the Greek Tragedy in New Translations series offers new translations that go beyond the literal meaning of the Greek in order to evoke the poetry of the originals. Under the general editorship of Peter Burian and Alan Shapiro, each volume includes a critical introduction, commentary on the text, full stage directions, and a glossary of the mythical and geographical references in the play. In Andromache, Euripides challenges our concept of tragic character as he transforms our expectations of tragic structure. Through its subtly varied metrics, the play develops an increasingly complex plot and concludes with a simultaneous realization of realism and supernaturalism. The play takes place in the aftermath of the Trojan War. Andromache has become a concubine to Achilles' son, Neoptolemus, bearing him a child, Molossus. The captive Andromache is haunted by memories of her former life and by her love for Hector and their son Astyanax, both slain by the Greeks who are now her masters. She was born and raised in the city of Cilician Thebe, over which her father ruled. The name means "man battler" or "fighter of men" (note that there was also a famous Amazon warrior named "Andromache," probably in this meaning) or "man's battle" (i.e. "courage" or "manly virtue"), from the Greek stem "man" and"battle." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Andromache: A Play in Three Acts My Dear Archer, The germ of this play sprang into existence on a certain April day in 1896 which you and I spent chiefly in dragging our reluctant bicycles up the great hills that surround Riveaulx Abbey, and discussing, so far as the blinding rain allowed us, the questions whether all sincere comedies are of necessity cynical, and how often we had had tea since the morning, and how far it would be possible to treat a historical subject loyally and unconventionally on a modern stage. Then we struck (as, I fear, is too often the fate of those who converse with me) on the subject of the lost plays of the Greek tragedians. We talked of the extraordinary variety of plot that the Greek dramatist found in his historical tradition, the force, the fire, the depth and richness of character-play.
