Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Geology of the Henry Mountains The manuscript of the first edition was finished in the year 1877. It was at once put in type, and in anticipation Of a speedy issue the current year was marked on the imprint. There were, however, serious delays in the preparation of the illustrations, and it was not until 1879 that the volume was bound and distributed. Since the preparation of the manuscript the literature of the subject has been enriched by the publication of numerous descriptions of igneous mountains of the Plateau Province and of the Great Plains, and especially by important contributions to the physics Of volcan ism, in the light of which the author would be glad to give his work a full revision. The necessary time is not, however, at his disposal, and he has contented himself with a few verbal amendments and the addition of an appendix. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Petrography of the Newark Igneous Rocks of New Jersey The shale 1 to feet beneath the First Mountain basalt, around the curved southwestern portion, is mottled by partial bleaching and rendered porous by the removal of small calcite crystals which this rock usually contains. In the spaces native copper and chalcocite have' been deposited. Nothing comparable to this is found under the' other sheets, nor under other portions of this one. The effects are attributed to ore-bearing solutions, proba bly magmatic waters, that brought up the copper from the intrusive sheet of Palisade diabase below. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Volcanoes: Their Structure and Significance Where it not that Nature sometimes supplies new material, there would be little excuse for another book on Volcanoes. The treatises of Daubeny and Scrope (to speak only of those in English) are not yet superannuated; the concise volume contributed by Professor Judd to the International Scientific Series is only seventeen years old; and while these chapters were being written Sir A. Geikie's work on British Volcanoes, and Professor I. C. Russell's on those of North America, made their appearance. The last two, however, are more or less restricted to special topics, and some eruptions of exceptional importance have occurred during the last twenty years, so that I have ventured to increase the literature on this interesting and, in some respects, very difficult subject. In writing this book, I have endeavoured to lead the reader through descriptions of the varied phenomena of volcanic action, in the present and in the past, towards ascertaining by inference the cause or causes of eruptions.
