Book excerpt: Intensities of Laue-Bragg scattering from powdered crystals of LiH and LiD were obtained at 20, 77 and 194, and 303 K with a recording G-M counter spectrometer and a special Dewar specimen mount. Relative crystal-structure factors and relative atomic form factors were calculated from the intensities; absolute atomic form factors and characteristic temperatures were obtained from the relative form-factor values. Temperature coefficients and amplitudes of vibration were calculated from the characteristic temperatures. Electron- density distributions for KiH, obtained from the absolute atomic-form-factor data, were used to calculate radial charge distributions. Evidence was discovered which suggested a change in the ionization state of the crystals with changes in temperature.

Book excerpt: We present the first ultrafast temporally, spectrally and angularly resolved x-ray scattering measurements from shock-compressed matter. These laser-compressed lithium-hydride samples are well characterized by inelastic Compton and Plasmon scattering of a K-[alpha] x-ray probe providing independent measurements of temperature and density. The experimental spectra yield the absolute elastic and inelastic scattering intensities from the measured density of free electrons. The data show excellent agreement with the total intensity and structure when using the two-species form factor and accounting for ionic screening.

Book excerpt: The room temperature infrared reflection spectra of lithium hydride, lithium deuteride, lithium -6 hydride, and lithium-7 hydride have been measured A Kramers-Kronig analysis was then used to determine the frequency dependence of the lattice dielectric constants, and thereby to obtain the long wavelength transverse optical (TO) and longitudinal optical (LO) lattice vibration frequencies. Within experimental error, the observed TO and LO frequencies of 'isotopic compounds' are found to be inversely proportional to the square roots of the reduced masses of the ion pairs. The data were used to derive the Szigeti effective charges for each of the compounds. The observed effective charges are discussed in terms of the shell model representation of the vibrating ions. Book excerpt: The infrared reflection spectra of single crystal lithium hydride, lithium deuteride, lithium-6 hydride, and lithium-7 hydride have been measured and analyzed. The long wavelength limits of the optical lattice vibrational frequencies have been determined and used to find the static dielectric constants and Szigeti effective charges of all the isotopic variations studied. It is found that the square of the longitudinal (or transverse) frequency is inversely proportional to the reduced mass of the ion pairs forming the crystal. The Szigeti effective charge for LiH, e sub s(*) = (0.53 plus or minus 0.02) e, is qualitatively accounted for by the Dick and Overhauser shell model for the vibrating ions. A slight isotope effect on the e sub s (*) is noted in LiD and the difference in effective charges is interpretable within the framework of the shell model. (Author).
