Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American War; Facts and Fallacies: A Speech I think I shall not be wrong also in assuming, and in fact in assert ing, that during the last twelve months there has been a vast change in public feeling on the question, and that there is at present much less sympathy felt in this country for the Southern Confederacy than there was; and also that there IS much less confidence felt as to the ultimate success of the rebellion. I have never made any secret of the fact that, from beginning to end, my sympathy has been with the North, during the present struggle - of course I do not mean. That I sympathize with every act of the North, or would attempt to justify all they have done or left undone - but I rejoice in the conviction that the infamous attempt to create a great slave empire has failed, and that for the future the Government of the United States will be in favor of Liberty, and against Slavery. There are two reasons why I have felt so strongly and spoken so earnestly on the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America's Duty: As Shown by Our Military History, Its Facts and Fallacies Panic patriotism appears from time to time when the clouds of possible trouble loom more heavily than usual. There is much discussion, some feverish activity, but little accomplishment. Adequate national preparedness on sound lines will be secured only when there is a general appreciation of its vital importance for defense and of the further fact that it can not be improvised or done in a hurry. It includes both moral and material organization. Military preparedness, which includes preparation on land and sea, should go band and hand with a nations policy. Our policy is not one of aggression, but one which looks only to a secure defense. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A second American Civil War, a devastating plague, and one family caught deep in the middle—this gripping debut novel asks what might happen if America were to turn its most devastating policies and deadly weapons upon itself. From the author of What Strange Paradise "Powerful ... as haunting a postapocalyptic universe as Cormac McCarthy [created] in The Road." —The New York Times Sarat Chestnut, born in Louisiana, is only six when the Second American Civil War breaks out in 2074. But even she knows that oil is outlawed, that Louisiana is half underwater, and that unmanned drones fill the sky. When her father is killed and her family is forced into Camp Patience for displaced persons, she begins to grow up shaped by her particular time and place. But not everyone at Camp Patience is who they claim to be. Eventually Sarat is befriended by a mysterious functionary, under whose influence she is turned into a deadly instrument of war. The decisions that she makes will have tremendous consequences not just for Sarat but for her family and her country, rippling through generations of strangers and kin alike.
