Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Versus the German View of the War The two articles here reprinted by request, were written for the Boston Post (February 7th and 14th). They are an examination of and reply to the appeals of the German propagandists to American sympathy, and give what the writer believes is the American view of certain incidents that have shocked the world, and of the German policies pursued in justifying and carrying on the present war. It is also believed they present the fundamental reason why Americans refuse their sympathy to Germany. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our War With Germany: A History The participation of the United States in the great war is one of the rare historical events that give direction to the prog ress of the world. The self-governing states of Europe were struggling for life and the greatest republic in the world went to their assistance at the critical moment. A century ago the American people first proved that republican government can succeed in a first rate nation. It was as fitting as essential that they should have interfered to preserve it in time of danger. It is in this sense that the future historian will make up his opinion of our part in the great struggle. When the passions of the day subside, the American people will come to this view of the subject. They will not ask very closely about the errors committed in the conduct of the war, but they will wish to know what the world crisis was, how the nation as a nation met it, and how the people now living adjusted themselves to the problems growing out of the war when it was won. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German-Americans and the European War: A Reply to Mr. Oswald Garrison Villard and Others With the exception of the first few years after the creation of this republic the naturalized citizen has been the object of constant attacks unless he was of English nativity. In the war of the revolution the Germans and the Irishmen fought almost without exception for the independence of the colonies, while practically all the Tories or opponents of the new commonwealth were of English birth. After the republic had been established about ten years the Federal party, which was in possession of the government, held the foreigners responsible for the attacks made upon it. It passed in 1798 the so-called alien and sedition laws, which practically deprived every inhabitant of the United States born on foreign soil of the protection of the laws. These statutes, which, by the way, were soon repealed, were the only ones ever passed in the United States with the open and ovowed intention to prevent criticism of the Government by suspending the Constitution and supplanting judges and juries by executive orders, and it is worthy of more than passing notice that they, as stated explicitly by Prof. Woodrow Wilson and his "History of the American People," were directed against Frenchmen and Englishmen. The loyalty of Germans and Irishmen in the United States had never been questioned up to that time. During the following decades immigration from Europe was so small that the percentage of naturalized voters was negligible, and therefore not much attention was paid to them. A change name, when about the middle of the last century, large numbers of Germans and Irishmen had come to this country and began to take an interest in American politics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A German-American's Confession of Faith In view of the bitter and ill informed criticism which my stand during the present war has evoked from many Germans and German-Americans, I think it a duty both to myself and to the cause which I represent to bring together at least some of the documents in which my course of action is contained. They consist of articles and other kinds of contributions to various magazines and newspapers between October 1914 and May 1915, dealing successively with the following topics: the moral and spiritual forces of contemporary Germany, the question of American neutrality, the duties of German-Americans both toward the land of their fathers and their adopted country, the mission of America for the peace of Europe. Slight as are these contributions to the literature of the great world conflict that engulfs us, they are at least inspired by the endeavor to be loyal to obligations old and new. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War and America This book discusses the essential factors and issues in the European war and their meaning and import for America. The hour for an im personal account of the war has certainly not yet come, and may not come for a long while. What our time can contribute is the reflection of the great war in the minds of individuals. A story of memories and impressions, of fears and hopes, has to-day more inner truth than any history of the struggle apparently written with an historian 's coolness. This diary, therefore, views the events as they unfold themselves from week to week, from the angle of personal experiences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters and Memoirs: Relating to the War of American Independence, and the Capture of the German Troops at Saratoga Fragments of this work were first pub lished in English, by General Wilkinson, in the Memoirs of my own Times. They were afterwards, if we mistake not, copied into one or more periodical works; and all, or the greater part of them are also to be found, literally transcribed from that former translation, in Professor Sil liman's entertaining Tour to Canada. But the whole work had not as yet been transferred to the English, from the ori ginal German, when a friend, for whose taste we have a high regard, and who is, b'yfihis knowledge not less of the German than English literature, a competent judge of the merit of books in both languages, suggested the utility of adding to the lat ter, a work more peculiarly interesting to the two nations, who have that tie of common feeling, than to the Germans, who can merely find in its pages melan choly memorials of misfortunes, which no no reasonable interest, no national lse led a portion of their countrymen, ery small, it is true, to incur beyond the cean. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German Conspiracies in America From an American Point of View is written by Alabama politician William Henry Skaggs. This is only one of two books by Skaggs, the other of which is entitled "The Southern Oligarchy: An Appeal in Behalf of the Silent Masses of Our Country Against the Despotic Rule of the Few." Skaggs, as both a politician and an author, is very outspoken and he presents his strong beliefs with powerful writing in this book. This book is written with World War I in mind, as almost a response to both the conflict with Germans in Europe and in response to the conflicts in the United States between "Americans" and "Germans" during the War. Skaggs argues that the anti-German bias that grew during the years of World War I began long ago, and that conspiracies perpetuated by Germans have existed in the United States since its inception. Skagg reveals his own bias against Germans as he forcefully attempts to unveil and dissect German conspiracies within U.S. borders. While Skaggs offers some interesting and relevant historic information, his book German Conspiracies in America From an American Point of View reads heavily as a treatise against all Germans, regardless of loyalty or conduct. While this book affords the reader an interesting view into nationalism and the anti-German sentiment that grew in the U.S. around the World Wars, the book also reads like a xenophobic propaganda piece. Ultimately, this book has some entertainment value for individuals interested in conspiracy theories and for readers who won't take the text too seriously. Book excerpt: The classic account of the final offensive against Hitler’s Third Reich. The Battle for Berlin was the culminating struggle of World War II in the European theater, the last offensive against Hitler’s Third Reich, which devastated one of Europe’s historic capitals and marked the final defeat of Nazi Germany. It was also one of the war’s bloodiest and most pivotal battles, whose outcome would shape international politics for decades to come. The Last Battle is Cornelius Ryan’s compelling account of this final battle, a story of brutal extremes, of stunning military triumph alongside the stark conditions that the civilians of Berlin experienced in the face of the Allied assault. As always, Ryan delves beneath the military and political forces that were dictating events to explore the more immediate imperatives of survival, where, as the author describes it, “to eat had become more important than to love, to burrow more dignified than to fight, to exist more militarily correct than to win.” The Last Battle is the story of ordinary people, both soldiers and civilians, caught up in the despair, frustration, and terror of defeat. It is history at its best, a masterful illumination of the effects of war on the lives of individuals, and one of the enduring works on World War II.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forum for January, 1918: Misunderstood America The saving common-sense of the average American, regardless of his views on war in general and concerning this one in particular, has crystallized his opinion into a few words very much, perhaps, like these: The war is on. One side or the other is going to win it. There is an irrepressible conflict between the views and the objects of the Imperial German Government and the ideas and ideals of the American Republic. If Germany wins, the dream of the pacifist will become the nightmare of despair. It is better for the world that Germany's enemies win. We must win. We will win. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Plan: How to Pay for the War The word "Hell" is derived from the Old English helle, meaning "that which hides," or "that which has a wall built around it." After all these years of hell, while the progress of the world has been arrested, and the development of the great industrial institutions has been at a stand-still, the question arises: "After this, what?" Shall the world suffer and groan under this consuming power of evil; shall it still continue to prepare for more evil, piling up debt upon debt, and forging new yokes for men's necks, or shall it go back to the paths of peace and progress, at once undoing the past, and giving to those who are left peaceful years to rebuild and repair the ravages of war?
