N ot a little, selfish, shrewd part, nor even a strong and ambitious part, but a high - minded, generous, a noble part. Our one fixed doctrine of international policy is founded in a fine chivalry, and all the resources of this conquered continent are the common property of all peoples. Indeed, it is not going beyond the truth to say that When we look deeply into the American heart we Will surely and always find a living and growing sense of trusteeship underlying our rights of possession. We see superficialities Which make for doubt sometimes. We swing off into eddies and by-currents and are led to believe that the main stream is a myth, that after all this is a world for getting, and getting any way one can, for doing and doing what at the time is profit able. But this is a humor of growth. The mood does not last. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Introducing the American Spirit: Look inside the book: These unconventional studies, most of which received their inspiration through the visit of the Herr Director and his charming wife, are here offered as an Introduction to the American Spirit, not only to the Herr Director and the Frau Directorin, but to those Americans who do not realize that a nation, as well as man, "cannot live by bread alone;" that its most precious asset, its greatest element of strength, is its Spirit, and that the elements out of which the Spirit is made, are so rare, so delicate, that when once wasted they cannot readily be replaced. ...What the Herr Director and the Frau Directorin would say to the sky-scraper meant to me, not whether they would say it is beautiful or ugly, but whether they would discover in it the Spirit of America, the daring spirit of the pioneers who built Towers of Babel, though reversing the process; for they began with a confusion of tongues which outbabeled Babel, and finished on a day of Pentecost when men said: "We do hear them all speaking our own tongue, the mighty works of God."

Repeatedly the question has been asked whether we have such a thing as a national conscious ness. Have the many nationalities represented in our ancestry and in our naturalized citizenship been welded together into one unified whole? Has the melting pot given us a single product, or only a loose amalgamation which is ready to fall apart under special stress and ten sion? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early American Spirit, and the Genesis of It: The Declaration of Independence, and the Effects of It The following Addresses have been previously published in separate pamphlets; but the edition of each being exhausted, and a desire having been expressed that the two should be combined in a volume, the publishers now present them in this form to the public. The first of these Addresses was delivered before the New York Historical Society, on the occasion of the celebration of its Seventieth Anniversary, April 15, 1875. The second was delivered before the citizens of New York, in accordance with the invitation of their distinguished committee, at the celebration of the Centennial Anniversary of American Independence, July 4, 1876. The favor with which the Addresses were received by the large and cultivated audiences convened on these respective occasions, at the Academy of Music, and the acceptance which they have since met with from the public, as presenting in brief compass a lucid and just exhibition of the earlier and the later life and progress of the American people, have induced the publishers to embody them in this more permanent form, for their wider circulation, and the easier preservation of them by those into whose hands they come. It is an occasion of interest to all of us, if regarded only in this relation. There are some present who remember still the founders of the Society: Egbert Benson, its first President, John Pintard, Brockholst Livingston, Dr. John M. Mason, Drs. Samuel L. Mitchill and David Hosack, Rufus King, Samuel Bayard, Daniel D. Tompkins, DeWitt Clinton, and others whose names are less familiar. There are many present to whom are recalled memorable faces, by the names of those who in subsequent years received its honors, or shared its labors, who are not now among the living: John Jay, Albert Gallatin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of America: As Shown by Her Great Documents B istory, as usually understood, concerns 1 Hitself with material things, with events and dates. There is another and more vital His tory, - that of the Mind and Soul of a people. Records of the collective mind of a nation write the History of its Spirit. The birth and development of the Spirit of merica are clearly recorded in cer tain public documents. These records, contained in broadly accepted public documents and in speeches of individual men, have been the outspeaking of a true national voice, - the expression of the collective Spirit of a people. Casting out from the huge mass of public documents such as are of transitory interest or simply new statements of already accepted prin ciples, the list is not long. It will be well for our people if the same courage to search for and follow the Right is shown by the records in the next as it has been in the last three hundred years.
