Why are our politics so starkly split and dysfunctional? Why are we, on all parts of the political spectrum, so angry, insecure, decreasingly tolerant and increasingly dogmatic? We need to know: you can’t fix what you don’t understand. But, we have not understood what ails democracy in modern America. We need a fresh look at how and why we have gotten here, to seek the underlying causes of the angry national malaise. That is what Difficult Times seeks to do. In a very few words, what ails modern America are the interlocking effects of the ideas, economy and culture, and politics of the modern world. There are three sets of causes which, like some chemicals in a test tube, are more combustible together than alone. First, the dominant ideas of the modern world-view, secular materialism and the contemporary form of individualism, have wounded the psyches and, if one can be so bold as to use the word, the souls of many Americans. Secular materialism is at odds with faith, spirituality and religion. Contemporary individualism makes it easy to avoid personal responsibility and self-reliance. These ideas have alienated and angered many traditional and religious Americans and have left holes in the hearts of many who are not. They have led to divisive changes in the old national moral code. Moreover, our economic and political thinking has been taken over by an extreme free market ideology which Adam Smith would have disdained. The second set of causes is the result of the forces of modern mass society and culture. For a majority of Americans, even before the Great Crash, the American economy was not working nearly as well as advertised. Growing disparities in levels of income and wealth have created a class society in which the American dream has receded for much of the country. We feel at sea in the gales of mass culture, rapid change and lost community. Among other things, it is hard to be the active citizens the Founders considered the bedrock of the new republic when public affairs are dominated by mass media and money and the sense of local and national community have been much diminished. The third set of causes is what has happened to American politics. We are discomfited because our democracy is working poorly; our politics polarized, angry and dysfunctional; the Republicans captured by the hard Right while liberalism alienated itself from a large part of the country, including much of its old constituency. The nation’s major problems are solvable with political will and skill, but our political system seems incapable to address them. Our politics and government have become dangerously dysfunctional. The forces which have bedeviled us as people and citizens have corroded the quality and democratic nature of our government. We have been dangerously drifting quite far from Lincoln’s ideal—our ideal—of “government of the people, by the people and for the people”. The book is motivated by hope and by compassion. The compassion is to grasp why people are so distressed, to be able to feel what is driving Americans, on all parts of the political spectrum, to so much anger, intolerance and fear. In fact a lot of social media users alleged that a large number of dead persons' ballots have been registered in swing states such as Pennsylvania and Michigan. Thus, whether the claims are true or false, this is an act capable of derailing an election into fallacious conclusions.If you have been paying attention to American politics in the past few years, you will notice that the American political system you know is failing and crumbling. Gone are the days of fair representation and altruistic politicians who want nothing more than to serve the people who elected them. In addition, the issue is much more foundational and lies with a crumbling system long out-dated which is in need of reform.A more worrisome issue that is tremendously adding more problems to American Politics is the way it is recently slowly sliding and digressing to the footpath of African politics with bribery and corruption increasing on a daily basis. Another persisting problem is millions of Americans from across the political spectrum are frustrated with the status quo in Washington and the gridlock in Congress that has become its defining feature but still; the status quo persists to no avail. Thus, despite the constant activity generated by the uproar of the electoral process, the congress remains mired in gridlock and the people remain frustrated.It is true that America is a great nation, but that does not mean it cannot have problems. American political and governmental system is out-dated and warped, and this has made the overall political system begin to become obsolete with problems of winner takes it all syndrome, win at all cost attitude, bribery and corruption, long history of rancour, vigorous rivalry between the two political philosophies, vigorous competition that spurs progress, and problem of nominating power to create a judicial majority that favours own political party. Recently, a Food Bank Director said that "In his 30 years of doing his work, he has never seen something egregious as this: the Agricultural Department mandating that millions of boxes of surplus food for needy families must include a letter from the President claiming credit for the program." This is obviously not different from what used to happen in African politics.Concisely, Americans of different ages and all levels have claimed that the 2016, 2018, and 2020 elections were marred by large numbers of people voting illegally but the truth is, this allegations of fraud whether true or false can make it harder for millions of eligible Americans to participate in elections, which can directly or indirectly boomerang in the American politics as a whole.Overall, the stereotype of problems of African politics is gradually prevailing more and more in American politics and the status quo may persist if not controlled, making tyranny become inevitable.
