Gas, however, is less restricted in its distribution than is oil, and numerous gas pools exist where no petroleum occurs in close proximity. Because of the relationship of natural gas to petroleum, the two substances must, to a consider able extent, be considered together. Both petroleum and natural gas are among the great industrial resources of the world and the countries which possess them in large quantities are exceedingly fortunate. The fact that these substances have not yet been developed in a particular locality is rarely proof of their absence, as no year passes without the discovery of new and often unsuspected fields or pools. The occurrence of oil and gas is widespread, no stratified rock being so young, and scarcely any so old, as absolutely to preclude their existence. Consequently, any country in which geological conditions are favorable is warranted in exerting every effort and undertaking great expense to investigate and determine its resources in petroleum and natural gas. In this outline of the occurrence of petroleum the numerous references made use of are given credit where possible.
