Its development has been attended by all the excitement incident to mining camps and the usual camp followers. In every branch, production, transportation and manufacture, it has presented the great hazards that test brave hearts and mould strong characters. It has created a race of men capable of meeting any emergency and ready for any achievement. Inevitably the story of such an industry is romance. The term here does not denote fiction for the truth of petroleum and natural gas is more exciting than imaginary scenes. The aim in these pages has been to preserve the truth and tot tell the tale without the intrusion of the dry detail of a statistical or technical work. There has been no attempt to pain the lily or to gild refined gold. There is so much rich material in the origin and growth of the petroleum industry that it is wholly unnecessary to draw on the imagination for color. This is not a history, because it omits minutiae inseparable from a continuous record. It is just the romance of petroleum and natural gas, and some account of the human factors who have made the history of the business. It trails no other book, nor does it bar the way of any that may follow. It takes its own path into a fascinating field of romance in human endeavor, namely, the supplying of light to a waiting world: the preparation of the way for aerial navigation and the conquests of distance by private carriages. The ordinary walks of this mining with the drill lead into wonderland. In the ages there has been nothing like it. Aladdin's lamp was no more marvellous than the kerosene torch, nor did it bring to its owner more of wealth and luxury. Human progress and popular education have been thrust forward by the discovery of this resource of nature and the world owes a debt of gratitude to the men who have made its development possible. No other industry in the history of the world grew up so fast, and now... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Windham Press is committed to bringing the lost cultural heritage of ages past into the 21st century through high-quality reproductions of original, classic printed works at affordable prices. This book has been carefully crafted to utilize the original images of antique books rather than error-prone OCR text. This also preserves the work of the original typesetters of these classics, unknown craftsmen who laid out the text, often by hand, of each and every page you will read. Their subtle art involving judgment and interaction with the text is in many ways superior and more human than the mechanical methods utilized today, and gave each book a unique, hand-crafted feel in its text that connected the reader organically to the art of bindery and book-making. We think these benefits are worth the occasional imperfection resulting from the age of these books at the time of scanning, and their vintage feel provides a connection to the past that goes beyond the mere words of the text.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Petroleum: Its Production and Use The following pages have been re printed from the Journal of the Soci ety of Arts, London, with the omissions of such portions as would seem to be of little or no interest to American read ers. The petroleum industry occupies a wide field in this country, and the amount of capital invested in it is very great, and while, therefore, all that was stated by Mr. Redwood in his lectures was ad mirable, and doubtless of much interest to his English hearers, very much, on the other hand, would prove to be of no material value to the American reader. We feel on the whole, however, that the subject matter of these lectures, with the exceptions stated, are worth preservation, and believe that all that is here given will be found to be of interest to readers here. It has been deemed better to change the matter from the lecture form in which it appeared in the columns of the Journal of the Society of Arts. W. H. F. Book excerpt: IDA MINERVA TARBELL (1857-1944) is remembered today as a muckraking journalist, thanks to this 1904 blockbuster expos. Originally published as a series of articles in McClure's magazine, this groundbreaking work highlighted the dangers of business monopolies and contributed to the eventual breakup of Standard Oil. As modern-day muckraker Danny Schechter writes in his new introduction, exclusive to this Cosimo Classics edition: "In this era of financial crisis compounded, and even perhaps enabled, by a dearth of investigative reporting, it is valuable to go back in time to learn from the work of great journalists with the courage to have taken on avaricious corporations and irresponsible business practices. "Perhaps no book demands our attention and respect as much as the one now in your hands. The unabridged edition, long out of print, of Ida Tarbell's study/expose of the history of the Standard Oil Company is an American classic, a model of careful research, detailed analysis, clear expository writing, and social mission. It has been hailed as one of the top ten of journalism's greatest hits." In Volume II, Tarbell explores: [ battles over oil pipelines [ the marketing of oil [ the political response to Standard's domination [ breaking up the oil trust [ competition in the oil industry [ and more.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Gas Institute, Vol. 2: Ninth Annual Meeting, October 21, 22, 23, 1914, New York, N. Y One criticism that can be made of the early installations is that the designers did not take full advantage of existing knowledge in the natural gas and oil fields at that time, and substituted inferior material and workmanship, trusting the purchase of material largely to jobbers, who took cheapness before quality, with the result that there are many very leaky high pressure lines. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 982 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of the Petroleum Industry, Vol. 1 of 2 Wherever petroleum occurs in nature, natural gas is generally found in the same locality or region. Gas, however, is less restricted in its distribution than is oil, and numerous gas pools exist where no petroleum occurs in close proximity. Because of the relationship of natural gas to petroleum, the two substances must, to a consider able extent, be considered together. Both petroleum and natural gas are among the great industrial resources of the world and the countries which possess them in large quantities are exceedingly fortunate. The fact that these substances have not yet been developed in a particular locality is rarely proof of their absence, as no year passes without the discovery of new and often unsuspected fields or pools. The occurrence of oil and gas is widespread, no stratified rock being so young, and scarcely any so old, as absolutely to preclude their existence. Consequently, any country in which geological conditions are favorable is warranted in exerting every effort and undertaking great expense to investigate and determine its resources in petroleum and natural gas. In this outline of the occurrence of petroleum the numerous references made use of are given credit where possible. In addition to those specifically mentioned there are certain general sources of information, such as the report of S. F. Peckham entitled, The Production, Technology and Uses of Petroleum and its Products, in volume 10 Of the Tenth Census of the United States, 1880, pages 1-319' A Treatise on Petroleum by Sir Boverton Redwood, London, 1913, three volumes; Petroleum Mining and Oil Field Development, by Arthur Beeby Thompson, London, 1916, 648 pages; the annual statis tical reports in the Mineral Resources series of the United States Geological Survey, by David T. Day, S. H. Shotwell, Joseph D. Weeks, F. H. Oliphant, W. T. Griswold and John D. Northrop, and many other Geological Survey references of a general nature. In this chapter the word oil is frequently used as being sufficiently synonymous with petroleum for the subject matter in hand.
