Book Synopsis World Encyclopedia of Peace by : Linus Pauling
Download or read book World Encyclopedia of Peace written by Linus Pauling and published by Pergamon. This book was released on 1986 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Encyclopedia of Peace is the first attempt of its kind to provide an integrated body of information on peace in all its aspects. The Encyclopedia has two predominant themes: peace research and peace activism. In combining these two themes, the Editors have sought to demonstrate the inter-relationships between them and the ways in which they have fostered each other. Consequently, peace is discussed in these volumes from a very broad spectrum of perspectives: from the idealist to the realist; from the global to the subnational; from the cultural to the economic; from the religious to the feminist; and from the historical to the contemporary.

Book Synopsis The Nemesis of Power by : Harald Kleinschmidt
Download or read book The Nemesis of Power written by Harald Kleinschmidt and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nemesis of Power is the first book to look at the history of international relations theories. Many theorists have investigated the nature of power, studying it in its social, political, economic, intellectual and physical contexts in order to define it. Rather than present yet another definition, Harald Kleinschmidt shows how the theorists themselves have perceived and handled the concept of power and how conduct in international relations has been evaluated. Taking a broad look at international relations theories from the Roman Empire to the modern transformation of the European world picture, Kleinschmidt bridges the gap between theory and history by subjecting theory to the logic and method of historical inquiry. Drawing on original sources, he reads international relations theories against their social and cultural contexts, placing an emphasis on the ways in which changes in theory are reflections of a wider pattern of changes in culture.

Book Synopsis Does the Constitution Follow the Flag? by : Kal Raustiala
Download or read book Does the Constitution Follow the Flag? written by Kal Raustiala and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-18 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bush Administration has notoriously argued that detainees at Guantanamo do not enjoy constitutional rights because they are held outside American borders. But where do rules about territorial legal limits such as this one come from? Why does geography make a difference for what legal rules apply? Most people intuitively understand that location affects constitutional rights, but the legal and political basis for territorial jurisdiction is poorly understood. In this novel and accessible treatment of territoriality in American law and foreign policy, Kal Raustiala begins by tracing the history of the subject from its origins in post-revolutionary America to the Indian wars and overseas imperialism of the 19th century. He then takes the reader through the Cold War and the globalization era before closing with a powerful explanation of America's attempt to increase its extraterritorial power in the post-9/11 world. As American power has grown, our understanding of extraterritorial legal rights has expanded too, and Raustiala illuminates why America's assumptions about sovereignty and territory have changed. Throughout, he focuses on how the legal limits of territorial sovereignty have diminished to accommodate the expanding American empire, and addresses how such limits ought to look in the wake of Iraq, Afghanistan, and the war on terror. A timely and engaging narrative, Does the Constitution Follow the Flag? will change how we think about American territory, American law, and-ultimately-the changing nature of American power.
