Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American College, in American Life I have believed, and still believe, that through the securing of this double purpose the college may be able to be a richer blessing to this great life of which the college is a part, and which it is set to serve. No book of a kind such as this can make any pretence of being complete. This volume includes the consideration of only a few of the more vital questions. Other questions, quite as vital possibly, I hope to be able to discuss in other volumes. For the American college, like American life or the life of any progressive people, is full of infinite suggestions appealing to thought or to action. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the American College Intermediate education began at seven, when the boy was registered as a prospective citizen and began to go to school. The school houses were public property and were rented to the schoolmasters, of whom there were two; one for gymnastic, and the other for music; and to both the pupil went every day. Higher education began at about fourteen, and continued until the young man reached his majority. During this period the elegant gym nastic of the preceding period was continued, and was supplemented by athletic and military training. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American College: A Series of Papers Setting Forth the Program, Achievements, Present Status, and Probable Future of the American College The chapters included in this volume comprise the papers read at a Conference on the American College held on the occasion of the celebration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the founding of Allegheny College. They were all specially pre pared for this particular event. In fact, the en tire programme of the conference was made out before anyone was asked to read a paper. Careful attention was given to selecting for a particular topic the man who could speak with authority on that topic. The book, therefore, is a new book, and presents the freshest and most comprehensive thought on the American college. Your college colors, your college yell Did ever other sights and sounds make your pulses leap as they? no, nor are they likely to as long as men strive on field and flood, and campus and class-room bring them shoulder to shoulder. Whatever it is that wraps itself about the Old college and steals into the hearts of her children, it is potent to bring the Oldest grad and the youngest freshman roaring to their feet together when the boys have shown their mettle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great American Universities The unprecedented growth of American universities in recent years and their efforts to conform or to resist con formity with the demands of the times have effected such a transformation it is difficult to get a clear idea of their present condition and relative standing. A list of the larger universities arranged in the order of their size, wealth, scholarly productivity, or other objective criterion has surprises for almost every reader. He finds in the list and near the head of it names of institutions about which he knows little, and probably some of those whose names are most familiar to him are really very different from his conception of them, derived from their history or from early acquaintance. The alumnus who returns for the decennial reunion finds his Alma Mater greatly changed. Usually he is inclined to think that the change has not been altogether for the better in spite of the new buildings and crowds of students. He can, in fact, name the date when his Alma Mater began to decline and to lose the real old college spirit. It was ten years ago, when was gradu ated what is universally conceded by all its members to be the brightest class that ever came forth from its walls. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The College Ideal and American Life: An Address Delivered at the Seventy-Fifth Anniversary of Colby University The record of the student enrollment is an interesting study. In 1870, the total was 53. With steady additions this rose, in 1879, to 155. From that time it decreased, until, in 1886, there were 118 students in attendance. Since 1886, an uninterrupted increase has brought the enrollment to more than four times that of the begin ning of this period. At no time has it been more appar ent than now, that Colby University is needed just where she is. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American College Course Notwithstanding the immense debt we owe him, his fine art, his love Of the natural in life, his power for eleva tion, his graphic quality, his force Of imagination, his intrinsic morality - in a phrase, his poetic genius - he is in great danger of becoming meat only for the linguists and the makers Of German university theses. And yet his great worth for us is that he is a poet. But this fact is shadowed by the aspect his text presents to us, and by the cloud Of Obscurity which dims his light. He is repre sented as uncouth and unmusical, when he is of all poets most melodious; he is characterised as a religious and political reformer, when he was even less of a reformer and more purely a romantic story-teller than Sir Walter Scott himself; he is accused of lack of seriousness and labelled as a mere teller of ribald tales. The Puritans claimed him for what he was not, and the Cavaliers loved him for what he was not. Taken from the age in which he lived - judged by the standard Of another age - he may seem tasteless and even immoral. But our standards are not the standards of the fourteenth century, and even the Roman Catholic of to-day - nearer than his contempo raries of the scholasticism of Chaucer - will find it difficult to put himself in the exact attitude of the poet to the ethical and moral tendencies of an era that knew certain laxities of church discipline impossible in our own time. As to the alleged immorality of Chaucer, permit me to quote, as an apology for what at worst is only coarseness, the words of the late Coventry Patmore. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place of the College Graduate in American Life: An Address Delivered Before the Social Union at Amherst College, July 2, 1879 There are men from whom the great intellect, the public service, the marvellous eloquence of Webster, cannot extort forgiveness for the political errors of his later life. But it is hard to find a lover of a New England college who does not surrender at disere tion when he reads the two stories, - the one related by Mr. Webster in his autobiography. Of the occa sion when his father first intimated his intention of sending him to college: I remember that I was quite overcome and my head grew dizzy. The thing appeared to me so high, and the expense and sacri fice it was to cost my father so great, I could only press his hand and shed tears; - the other, of thatscene in the room of the Supreme Court of the United States, where, as he concluded the argument that made safe the endowment of every college in America, the few broken words of tenderness for his Alma Mater, bursting from the heart of the strong man, melted bench and bar and audience to tears.
