Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most women, a visit to the OB-GYN is a dreaded experience. It invokes images of sitting on an examination table in a flimsy, tissue paper gown, of staring nervously at the dreaded “stirrups,” of feeling exposed, of being poked and prodded, and of being asked embarrassing questions about sex and reproduction. If it is a first visit, the patient will inevitably wonder: “What is my doctor really like? Is he cold and clinical or friendly and down to earth? How did he become a doctor? And why?” In a book that is as eye-opening as it is compelling, retired OB-GYN Douglas Edwin Heritage invites us to share the joy, humor, and tragedy of his 43-year career as a medical student, intern, resident, and physician in private practice. Through a series of short vignettes, Heritage leads us through experiences ranging from the unconventional pranks of medical school to the solemnity of pronouncing his first patient. He candidly brings to life the colorful and often bizarre encounters that define the unique medical subculture of obstetrics and gynecology. Stimulating, irreverent, and often droll, My Life as an OB-GYN will delight both practitioners and laymen alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OB/GYN Board Exam Secrets is a high-yield reference, now in its Fourth Edition, that targets and summarizes what you need to know for your upcoming ABOG exams in 2021. For many candidates, board preparation is an intimidating "behind closed doors" process but this book, which has been years in the making, is the first to expose those well-kept secrets and is an absolute must-read. Your Qualifying and Certifying Examinations are not just another round of routine tests. The harsh reality is that most obstetricians and gynecologists have never even been exposed to an oral format, let alone been taught the best preparation methods for such an exam. It may feel like a game in which you are literally left to fend for yourself and ascertain the rules on your own. But in actuality, it is far from being a sport and the stakes could not be higher. This resource is definitely the most up-to-date, in-depth guide for taking these exams and is the perfect resource for residents and fellows alike, as well as for practicing obstetricians and gynecologists. That is because it takes information from a great number of sources, some of which are obscure and difficult to access, and puts it all into one concise, easy-to-read text that will save you countless hours of research on your own. Special thanks goes to Abby Morgan, director of sales and marketing for the Warwick Melrose-Dallas Hotel, for her generous assistance in furnishing the photos for this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This accessible text expands on the recommendations of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists' Well Woman Task Force (WWTF) to provide a practical guide to conducting a successful well-woman visit. Background chapters summarize the history of the WWTF and rationale and evidence supporting periodic health visits, explain the principles of early diagnosis and prevention, and offer advice on the practical side of conducting a visit, including considerations for special populations. Chapters detail each component of the visit, first explaining the scope of a problem, the rationale for screening or prevention, and the factors that alter a screening. The WWTF recommendations are then summarized and advice is offered on how to apply them. Case studies and advice on how to identify and assess new guidelines are also provided, ensuring providers are well-equipped to offer efficient and effective care.

Book excerpt: This new edition of an acclaimed text reviews the evidence for best practice in obstetrics to present the reader with the right information, with appropriate use of proven interventions and avoidance of ineffectual or harmful ones. The information is presented in the right format by summarizing evidence succinctly and clearly in tables and algorithms. The aim is to inform the clinician, to reduce errors, and "to make it easy to do it right." The volume can be purchased separately or together with the companion volume on Maternal-Fetal Evidence Based Guidelines (set ISBN 9780367567033). The Series in Maternal-Fetal Medicine is published in conjunction with the Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine. From reviews of previous editions: Obstetric Evidence Based Guidelines is a text that will prove useful to residents and fellows as well as to practicing obstetric clinicians. Furthermore, it can be used as a source for the development of hospital policies for the management of these obstetric problems ... The major advantage of this text is that it provides guidelines for the management of commonly encountered obstetric issues in a single book. —JAMA This is a welcome addition to a physician’s library. Its use of current studies and easy-to-read format allow for easy fact-checking and referencing. —Doody’s Review Service

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JOHN S. MILLIS In 1966 the Citizens Commission on Graduate Medical Education observed that the explosive growth in biomedical science and the consequent increase in medical skill and technology of the twentieth century had made it possible for physicians to respond to the episodes of illness of patients with an ever-increasing effectiveness, but that the increase in knowledge and technology had forced most physicians to concentrate upon a disease entity, an organ or organ system, or a particular mode of diagnosis or therapy. As a result there had been a growing lack of continuing and comprehensive patient care. The Commission expressed the opinion that "Now, in order to bring medicine's enhanced diagnostic and therapeutic powers fully to the benefit of society, it is necessary to have many physicians who can put medicine together again. "! The Commission proceeded to recommend the education and training of sub stantial numbers of Primary Physicians who would, by assuming primary responsi bility for the patient's welfare in sickness and in health, provide continuing and comprehensive health care to the citizens of the United States. In 1978 it is clear that the recommendation has been accepted by the public, the medical profession, and medical education. There has been a vigorous response in the development of family medicine and in the fields of internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics. One is particularly impressed by the wide acceptance on the part of medical students of the concept of the primary physician. Dr. John S.
