Book excerpt: Since the time of Columbus, explorers dreamed of a water passage across the North American continent. President Thomas Jefferson shared this dream. He conceived the Corps of Discovery to travel up the Missouri River to the Rocky Mountains and westward along possible river routes to the Pacific Ocean. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led this expedition of 1804?6. Along the way they filled hundreds of notebook pages with observations of the geography, Indian tribes, and natural history of the trans-Mississippi West. This volume includes Lewis's and Clark's journals beginning in August 1803, when Lewis left Pittsburgh to join Clark farther down the Ohio River. The two men and several recruits camped near the mouth of the Missouri River for five months of training, acquiring supplies and equipment, and gathering information from travelers about the trip upriver. They started up the Missouri in May 1804. This volume ends in August, when the Corps of Discovery camped near the Vermillion River in present-day South Dakota.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Remember the Maine!” The war cry spread throughout the United States after the American battleship was blown up in Havana harbor on February 15, 1898. Americans, already sympathetic with Cuba’s struggle for independence from Spain, demanded action. Brief and decisive, not too costly, the Spanish-American War made the United States a world power. David F. Trask’s War with Spain in 1898 is a cogent political and military history of that “splendid little war.” It describes the failure of diplomacy; the state of preparedness of both sides; the battles, including those of Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders; the enlargement of conflict to rout the Spanish from Puerto Rico and the Philippines; and the misconceptions surrounding the war.

Book excerpt: Chronicling American cane-making from 1607 through 1953, this beautifully illustrated book features canes in the context of American history. An ambitious and scholarly volume that includes over 900 images, this book features many of the canes shown at the celebrated cane exhibit at the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York in the mid-1980s. Written by a cane collector and walking-stick expert whose private collection was estimated to be around 1,300 canes and whose enthusiasm inspired museums and wealthy private collectors to invest in the field, this book displays decades of work and dedication to the craft. Presented are canes used by past political figures, canes made of glass, and canes carved by soldiers from the American Revolution to World War II.

Book excerpt: Except in a few instances, since World War II no American soldier or sailor has been attacked by enemy air power. Conversely, no enemy soldier orsailor has acted in combat without being attacked or at least threatened by American air power. Aviators have brought the air weapon to bear against enemies while denying them the same prerogative. This is the legacy of the U.S. AirForce, purchased at great cost in both human and material resources.More often than not, aerial pioneers had to fight technological ignorance, bureaucratic opposition, public apathy, and disagreement over purpose.Every step in the evolution of air power led into new and untrodden territory, driven by humanitarian impulses; by the search for higher, faster, and farther flight; or by the conviction that the air way was the best way. Warriors have always coveted the high ground. If technology permitted them to reach it, men, women andan air force held and exploited it-from Thomas Selfridge, first among so many who gave that "last full measure of devotion"; to Women's Airforce Service Pilot Ann Baumgartner, who broke social barriers to become the first Americanwoman to pilot a jet; to Benjamin Davis, who broke racial barriers to become the first African American to command a flying group; to Chuck Yeager, a one-time non-commissioned flight officer who was the first to exceed the speed of sound; to John Levitow, who earned the Medal of Honor by throwing himself over a live flare to save his gunship crew; to John Warden, who began a revolution in air power thought and strategy that was put to spectacular use in the Gulf War.Industrialization has brought total war and air power has brought the means to overfly an enemy's defenses and attack its sources of power directly. Americans have perceived air power from the start as a more efficient means of waging war and as a symbol of the nation's commitment to technology to master challenges, minimize casualties, and defeat adversaries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the world-class collection of expedition materials archived at Lewis & Clark College, this is the first comprehensive bibliography of publications about the Lewis and Clark expedition to be published in one hundred years. The Literature of the Lewis and Clark Expedition is divided into seven sections: the expedition's traveling library of scientific, technical, and cartographic materials (1754-1804); related congressional documents and early notices (1803-7); editions of Patrick Gass's journal (1807-1904); surreptitious accounts (1809-46); the Biddle-Allen narrative of the expedition and other edited editions (1814-2001); nineteenth-century publications (1803-1905); and twentieth-century publications (1906-2001). In each section introductory historical essays by Stephen Dow Beckham survey the large cast of characters who have contributed to the expedition story since the last years of the eighteenth century: legislators, scientists, explorers, journal writers, editors, publishers, printers, illustrators, cartographers, and collectors. The bibliographies for each section list all known publications related to the expedition, with fully annotated descriptions of primary texts. The book is lavishly illustrated with images from Lewis and Clark College's collection: title pages, contemporary engravings, maps, contemporary newspaper reports, and manuscript journals.

Gen Henry H. “Hap.” Arnold, US Army Air Forces (AAF) Chief of Staff during World War II, maintained diaries for his several journeys to various meetings and conferences throughout the conflict. Volume 1 introduces Hap Arnold, the setting for five of his journeys, the diaries he kept, and evaluations of those journeys and their consequences. General Arnold’s travels brought him into strategy meetings and personal conversations with virtually all leaders of Allied forces as well as many AAF troops around the world. He recorded his impressions, feelings, and expectations in his diaries. Maj Gen John W. Huston, USAF, retired, has captured the essence of Henry H. Hap Arnold—the man, the officer, the AAF chief, and his mission. Volume 2 encompasses General Arnold’s final seven journeys and the diaries he kept therein.
