Download or read book The Amateur's Vademecum written by E. B. Reilley and published by . This book was released on 1870 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reilley's work is a typical example of dance manuals published during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Whereas previous manuals often had many pages devoted to etiquette and deportment, Reilley devotes but two paragraphs, noting that he was leaving the rest to the "good sense and nature" of his readers. The manual provides an extensive history of dance from the Greeks and Romans to the courts of Italy and France to the dances of aboriginal American Indians. Demonstrating the century's growing interest in physical education, Reilley provides a detailed section on exercise. The manual gives descriptions of the popular ballroom dances of the era--quadrilles, waltz, schottisch, and polka.

Book Synopsis MRS. RAFFLES and R. HOLMES & CO. – 20+ Stories of the Amateur Cracksman's Family by : John Kendrick Bangs
Download or read book MRS. RAFFLES and R. HOLMES & CO. – 20+ Stories of the Amateur Cracksman's Family written by John Kendrick Bangs and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2017-05-29 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That last affair of Raffles and mine, wherein we had successfully got away with the diamond stomacher of the duchess of Herringdale, was still a live matter in British detective circles, and the very audacity of the crime had definitely fastened the responsibility for it upon our shoulders. (Mrs. Raffles) Mrs. Raffles – After the death of her husband A. J. Raffles, the popular 'Gentleman-Thief', his wife dons the hat of the clever thief with her husband's ex-partner Bunny posing as her butler in American high society. What follows then are entertaining stories of suspense and adventure with good dose of satire on the American high class. R. Holmes and Co. – Like his ingenious grandfather and grandmother, the amateur thieves, R. Holmes combines the best of Sherlock Holmes (his father) and maternal grandparents (A. J. Raffles and Mrs. Raffles) to start his own company. But it is left to see which inherited trait will dominate him, his father's or grandparents'? It is a pure pastiche and amusing parody of Sherlock Holmes series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. John Kendrick Bangs (1862–1922) was an American author, editor and satirist. He extended the original A. J. Raffles series by E. W. Hornung, who himself had inverted the character of Sherlock Holmes of his brother-in-law Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as a form of flattery.

Book Synopsis The Westerns and War Films of John Ford by : Sue Matheson
Download or read book The Westerns and War Films of John Ford written by Sue Matheson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-02-18 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responsible for some of the greatest films of the 20th century—The Grapes of Wrath, How Green Was My Valley, and The Quiet Man among others—John Ford was best known for motion pictures that defined the American West and the face of wartime military. A Hollywood celebrity, Ford lived his life against the background that Twentieth Century-Fox fashioned for him. As he did, the facts of his life merged with—and became inseparable from—his multifaceted legend, fostered by Hollywood’s studio culture and his own imagination. In The Westerns and War Films of John Ford Sue Mathesonoffers an engaging look at one of America’s greatest directors and the two genres of films that solidified his reputation. Drawing on previously unreleased material, this volume explores the man, the filmmaker, the veteran, and the legend—and the ways in which all of those roles shaped Ford’s view of America, national character, and his creative output. Among the films discussed here in depth are Ford’s early productions, such as The Iron Horse and Drums along the Mohawk, his military films, such as Submarine Patrol, The Battle of Midway, and They Were Expendable, and his Westerns, including Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Searchers, and Cheyenne Autumn. Ford imbued many of his creations with a point of view that represented his ideals, and the films discussed here illustrate their director’s distinct vision of American life on the frontier and in service of the country. That vision—Ford’s idealization of the American Character—would, in turn, shape the worldview of several generations. The Westerns and War Films of John Ford will appeal to critics and scholars, but also to any fan of this iconic filmmaker’s work.
