Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alternating Current Commutator Motor, and the Leakage of Induction Motors When, some years ago, the single-phase motor with commutator made its appearance in the technical world, and its practical importance had been proved by successful designs, the attention of inventors was directed to this class of machines. A great many new types were introduced in all parts of the world, so that it was impossible for the average electrical man to follow and to distinguish between" improvement" and "new principle." Classification may, therefore, help to clear matters. One way of effecting this classification is to express every feature of the machines by their names. Another method, which has been preferred in this book, is to show that there arc actually only two different principles: - 1. Direct current machines, made suitable for alternating current by laminating the field, inserting resistance between the armature and commutator, by compensating armature reaction, and by providing commutating poles wound in a special way. 2. Repulsion motors (I retain this name, which appears to be very popular, in spite of the fact that the word "repulsion" is not strictly correct). It will be recalled that when current flows through the armature of a direct cur rent machine, magnetism is produced by the ampere turns of the armature current, such magnetism tending to distort the flux from the field poles. In the familiar representation of the magnetic circuit Of machines, - the two pole model, - the arma ture magnetism is at right angles to the field magnetism, the armature current producing magnetic poles in line with the brushes. The amount of this magnetism depends directly on the value of the armature current and the permeability of the magnetic path. When alternating current is 'used, the change of the magnetism with the periodic change in the current pro duces an alternating e.m.f. Which being proportional to the rate of change of the magnetism will be in time-quadrature to the current. The armature winding thus acts in all respects simi larly to an induction coil.
