This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an in-dept analysis of the letter/sound correspondence of USA English. It combines two databases, one from the Times of London which counts the frequency of words in the newspaper, and the other from the truespel database of phonetic spelling of USA English. Together they combine to count letter and sound correspondence for frequency analysis. Each of the 26 letters of the alphabet is examined and lists are made of a letters most frequent position in words, top ten words containing the letter, and sounds spelled by the letter. Each of the 40 sounds are analyzed similarly. The analysis represents once and for all how the sounds of USA English are spelled as spoken (spoken word dialog being the same as newspaper text) and how often and in what way the letters of the alphabet portray those sounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary of USA English is directly taken from the Voice of America (VOA) “Intermediate Dictionary of English.” There are about 1,500 words in the dictionary. The VOA uses these words primarily for broadcasting in a simplified English mode. The words and definitions in this book are exactly as in the VOA version. However, because there is no pronunciation guide in the VOA version, a truespel pronunciation guide is provided modeled after the voicings of English on m-w.com, the Merriam-Webster talking dictionary. Unique to this dictionary is a reverse guide that lists phonetic words alphabetically so they can be looked up phonetically. This solves the problem of silent first letters. A large volume reverse dictionary will be available as truespel book 2. More info is available at truespel.com.

Book excerpt: Truespel Book Two is a reference book for finding the traditional spelling of a word by looking up the phonetic spelling as written in truespel. It solves the problem of looking up words beginning with silent letters by looking up the sounds themselves. Truespel is the first “pronunciation guide spelling” system, based on USA English. It is designed to replace the pronunciation guides in our dictionaries with a new standard keyboard ready phonetic spelling. USA English is now respelled in truespel, allowing great new capabilities. Truespel Book One: Analysis of the Sounds (Phonemes) of USA English (Authorhouse.com) utilizes the database to show the frequency of phoneme usage and the frequency of the various ways of spelling the 40 phonemes of USA English. A converter from traditional spelling to truespel is located at http://www.foreignword.com/dictionary/truespel/transpel.htm. Tutorials on truespel can be found in Books One and Two and at truespel.com. A discussion group is at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/truespel/

Her mother brought her up after her fathers death. She lived a very short period of life with mother but before dying, her mother handed over her to her cousin who lived in America. She continued her studies there but she came in trouble when her granny sold her to pimps. Further, that gang of pimps sold her to Marten, who was a high class Prostitute, for sending her to Dubai. However, one Russian man saved her from the prostitution. He bought her from Marten and purveyed her like a daughter and Olga was happy with him. Once again a strange anomaly happened; she was kidnapped by that gang of pimps but this time she was saved by her boyfriend. Fate changed its side and again she adopted prostitution for saving the life of her father-like. Diana, one of the members under Marten served her in front of Allan Pearson who was a Hollywood Director. He was astonished seeing her beauty. He helped her and offered her film to play a lead role. She denied but when he made her understand, she accepted his proposal after discussing with her father-like. He gave her an international podium and then she was a popular personality. Again she took a U-turn. She left America after completing her studies. When she reached Russia, she came across her second childhood friend. He deflowered her and Olga tried to attempt suicide but Igor stopped her and gave her full support. Finally, she joined the Russian Army after leaving the world of glamour and fulfilled the dream of her parents. She married with Igor and kept living a very happy life with him.

Book excerpt: Have you ever been confused by the fact that the words 'though' and 'bough' are pronounced differently, or frustrated by the realisation that 'hint' and 'pint' don't rhyme? It is well known that the spelling system of English is notoriously unhelpful as an indicator of how to pronounce English words. Spoken and written representations of English are mutually inconsistent, making it difficult to interpret the 'logic' of the language. Learning to transcribe English phonetically, however, provides an accurate visual interpretation of pronunciation: it helps you to realise what you actually say, rather than what you think you say. English Transcription Course is the ideal workbook for anyone wishing to practice their transcription skills. It provides a series of eight lessons, each dealing with a particular aspect of pronunciation, and introduces and explains the most important features of connected speech in modern British English - such as assimilation, elision and weak forms, concentrating on achieving a relaxed, informal style of speech. Each lesson is followed by a set of exercises which allow for extensive practise of the skills learnt in both current and previous chapters. Students can check their progress with the 'model' answers provided in the appendix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atlas of North American English provides the first overall view of the pronunciation and vowel systems of the dialects of the U.S. and Canada. The Atlas re-defines the regional dialects of American English on the basis of sound changes active in the 1990s and draws new boundaries reflecting those changes. It is based on a telephone survey of 762 local speakers, representing all the urbanized areas of North America. It has been developed by Bill Labov, one of the leading sociolinguists of the world, together with his colleagues Sharon Ash and Charles Boberg. The Atlas consists of a printed volume accompanied by an interactive CD-ROM. The print and multimedia content is also available online. Combined Edition: Book and Multimedia CD-ROM The book contains 23 chapters that re-define the geographic boundaries of North American dialects and trace the influence of gender, age, education, and city size on the progress of sound change; findings that show a dramatic and increasing divergence of English in North America; 139 four color maps that illustrate the regional distribution of phonological and phonetic variables across the North American continent; 120 four color vowel charts of individual speakers. The multimedia CD-ROM supplements the articles and maps by providing a data base with measurements of more than 100,000 vowels and mean values for 439 speakers; the Plotnik program for mapping each of the individual vowel systems; extended sound samples of all North American dialects; multimedia applications to enhance classroom presentations. Online Version: Book and CD-ROM content plus additional data The online version comprises the contents of the book and the multimedia CD-ROM along with additional data. It presents a wider selection of data, maps, and audio samples that will be recurrently updated; proffers simultaneous access to the information contained in the book and on the multimedia CD-ROM to all users in the university/library network; provides students with easy access to research material for classroom assignments. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice The first comprehensive biography of the most influential, controversial, and celebrated Palestinian intellectual of the twentieth century As someone who studied under Edward Said and remained a friend until his death in 2003, Timothy Brennan had unprecedented access to his thesis adviser’s ideas and legacy. In this authoritative work, Said, the pioneer of postcolonial studies, a tireless champion for his native Palestine, and an erudite literary critic, emerges as a self-doubting, tender, eloquent advocate of literature’s dramatic effects on politics and civic life. Charting the intertwined routes of Said’s intellectual development, Places of Mind reveals him as a study in opposites: a cajoler and strategist, a New York intellectual with a foot in Beirut, an orchestra impresario in Weimar and Ramallah, a raconteur on national television, a Palestinian negotiator at the State Department, and an actor in films in which he played himself. Brennan traces the Arab influences on Said’s thinking along with his tutelage under Lebanese statesmen, off-beat modernist auteurs, and New York literati, as Said grew into a scholar whose influential writings changed the face of university life forever. With both intimidating brilliance and charm, Said melded these resources into a groundbreaking and influential countertradition of radical humanism, set against the backdrop of techno-scientific dominance and religious war. With unparalleled clarity, Said gave the humanities a new authority in the age of Reaganism, one that continues today. Drawing on the testimonies of family, friends, students, and antagonists alike, and aided by FBI files, unpublished writings, and Said's drafts of novels and personal letters, Places of Mind synthesizes Said’s intellectual breadth and influence into an unprecedented, intimate, and compelling portrait of one of the great minds of the twentieth century.
