On a trip to Prague to visit an exhibition of precious objects of alchemy, Lorenzo Aragona finds himself caught in the dark murder of an old antiquarian, also fond of mysteries. He is suddenly catapulted into a hidden and disturbing world, run by a mysterious brotherhood that will force him to return to Naples. Helped by the Masons in the deciphering of a series of puzzles, but under the blackmail of shady figures who are threatening to kill him and those he holds dearest, Lorenzo finds himself in front of a real alchemic puzzle, which brings him back to studying the experiments of the famous Prince of Sansevero, who lived in Naples in 1700. The recovered traces, however, lead him away from his city, to France, looking for a stunning cathedral, containing nine mysterious mirrors. But what is this cathedral and what powerful secret is it hiding? What readers are saying about THE ALCHEMIST'S GIFT: 'If you are at all interested in alchemy, freemasonry, conspiracy with a good dose of murder, then Martin Rua's books are a must read'

Book Synopsis The Alchemist in Literature by : Theodore Ziolkowski
Download or read book The Alchemist in Literature written by Theodore Ziolkowski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike most other studies of alchemy and literature, which focus on alchemical imagery in poetry of specific periods or writers, this book traces the figure of the alchemist in Western literature from its first appearance in the Eighth Circle of Dante's Inferno down to the present. From the beginning alchemy has had two aspects: exoteric or operative (the transmutation of baser metals into gold) and esoteric or speculative (the spiritual transformation of the alchemist himself). From Dante to Ben Jonson, during the centuries when the belief in exoteric alchemy was still strong and exploited by many charlatans to deceive the gullible, writers in major works of many literatures treated alchemists with ridicule in an effort to expose their tricks. From the Renaissance to the Enlightenment, as that belief weakened, the figure of the alchemist disappeared, even though Protestant poets in England and Germany were still fond of alchemical images. But when eighteenth-century science almost wholly undermined alchemy, the figure of the alchemist began to emerge again in literature—now as a humanitarian hero or as a spirit striving for sublimation. Following these esoteric romanticizations, as scholarly interest in alchemy intensified, writers were attracted to the figure of the alchemist and his quest for power. The fin-de-siecle saw a further transformation as poets saw in the alchemist a symbol for the poet per se and others, influenced by the prevailing spiritism, as a manifestation of the religious spirit. During the interwar years, as writers sought surrogates for the widespread loss of religious faith, esoteric alchemy underwent a pronounced revival, and many writers turned to the figure of the alchemist as a spiritual model or, in the case of Paracelsus in Germany, as a national figurehead. This tendency, theorized by C. G. Jung in several major studies, inspired after World War II a vast popularization of the figure in novels—historical, set in the present, or juxtaposing past and present— in England, France, Germany, Italy, Brazil, and the United States. The inevitable result of this popularization was the trivialization of the figure in advertisements for healing and cooking or in articles about scientists and economists. In sum: the figure of the alchemist in literature provides a seismograph for major shifts in intellectual and cultural history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alchemy-the word itself conjures up images of charlatans mixing potions and concocting remedies during the Middle Ages in a futile quest to transform lead into gold. But the roots of alchemy can be traced back more than 2,500 years to locales as disparate as Egypt, India, and China, and it was considered serious science until as recently as the 16th century. In this highly regarded volume first published in 1888, Arthur E. Waite examines the lives and works of more than fifty alchemists, from the year 850 through the end of the 18th century. Readers will learn about such renowned figures as Thomas Aquinas, Roger Bacon, and Pope John XXII, and decide for themselves whether alchemy was the true precursor to modern chemistry or a pseudo-science populated by quacks. American-born British author ARTHUR EDWARD WAITE (1857-1942) was co-creator of the famous 1910 Rider-Waite Tarot deck. Among his numerous books are Book of Ceremonial Magic, Devil Worship in France, and New Encyclopedia of Freemasonry.

Book Synopsis Alchemy and the Alchemists by : Ethan Allen Hitchcock
Download or read book Alchemy and the Alchemists written by Ethan Allen Hitchcock and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this facsimile reprint of the original 1857 edition, the choice findings of such early writers as Basil Valentine, Thomas Vaughan, Raymond Lully, and Nicholas Flamel are analyzed and interpreted by the grandson of Ethan Allen, who was a personal friend and military advisor to President Lincoln. The original title page reads: "Remarks upon Alchemy and the Alchemists, indicating a method of discovering the true nature of Hermetic Philosophy; and showing that the search after the Philosopher's Stone had not for its object the discovery of an agent for the Transmutation of Metals. Being also an attempt to rescue from undeserved opprobrium the reputation of a class of Extraordinary Thinkers in Past Ages." This work is a valuable source for the study of man's spiritual integration and the contributions of prominent Rosicrucian mystics.
