Book excerpt: There is no group of individuals more iconic of 1960s counterculture than the hippies – the long-haired, colorfully dressed youth who rebelled against mainstream societal values, preached and practiced love and peace, and generally sought more meaningful and authentic lives. These 'flower children' are now over sixty and comprise a significant part of the older population in the United States. While some hippies rejoined mainstream American society as they grew older, others still maintain the hippie ideology and lifestyle. This book is the first to explore the aging experience of older hippies by examining aspects related to identity, generativity, daily activities, spirituality, community, end-of-life care, and wellbeing. Based on 40 in-depth interviews with lifelong, returning, and past residents of The Farm, an intentional community in Tennessee that was founded in 1971 and still exists today, insights into the subculture of aging hippies and their keys to wellbeing are shared.

Book excerpt: The Aquarian Age is an astrological era that is arriving in the year 2638 where humans will have the ability to read minds by resonance, and have x-ray vision by not processing the reflection of the image on the retina, but actually looking out and seeing the thing itself. This is not science fiction, but foretold by a PhD in physics who devoted her life to studying astrology and spirituality. She has now passed, but her niece Susanna Brown has put back into print the original 1987 limited edition version of her book. Dr. Glover shows how the Aquarian Age will help people to break out of the shell of ignorance, lack of self-esteem, and fear so that they can become, for the first time in history, truly free. As people become free to explore their own inner natures, the world around them, and other peoples, unprecedented advances will be made in self-actualization, scientific understanding, invention, and universal love. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories and songs from a childhood spent in a vanished world of revivals and road shows Anita Faye Garner grew up in the South—just about every corner of it. She and her musical family lived in Texarkana, Bossier City, Hot Springs, Jackson, Vicksburg, Hattiesburg, Pascagoula, Bogalusa, Biloxi, Gulfport, New Orleans, and points between, picking up sticks every time her father, a Pentecostal preacher known as “Brother Ray,” took over a new congregation. In between jump-starting churches, Brother Ray took his wife and kids out on the gospel revival circuit as the Jones Family Singers. Ray could sing and play, and “Sister Fern” (Mama) was a celebrated singer and songwriter, possessed of both talent and beauty. Rounding out the band were the young Garner (known as Nita Faye then) and her big brother Leslie Ray. At all-day singings and tent revivals across the South, the Joneses made a joyful noise for the faithful and loaded into the car for the next stage of their tour. But growing up gospel wasn’t always joyous. The kids practically raised and fended for themselves, bonding over a shared dislike of their rootless life and strict religious upbringing. Sister Fern dreamed of crossing over from gospel to popular music and recording a hit record. An unlikely combination of preacher’s wife and glamorous performer, she had the talent and presence to make a splash, and her remarkable voice brought Saturday night rock and roll to Sunday morning music. Always singing, performing, and recording at the margins of commercial success, Sister Fern shared a backing band with Elvis Presley and wrote songs recorded by Johnny Cash and many other artists. In her touching memoir The Glory Road, Anita Faye Garner re-creates her remarkable upbringing. The story begins with Ray’s attempts to settle down and the family’s inevitable return to the gospel circuit and concludes with Sister Fern’s brushes with stardom and the family’s journey west to California where they finally landed—with some unexpected detours along the way. The Glory Road carries readers back to the 1950s South and the intersections of faith and family at the very roots of American popular music. Book excerpt: Here is the human potential masterwork that defined the New Age. Called "an exciting vision of the future” (Cleveland Plain Dealer), “a handbook of the New Age” (USA Today), and “a new charter of human possibility” (Norman Cousins) upon its initial publication in 1980, The Aquarian Conspiracy is a breathtaking, compelling study of the changes in work, relationships, medicine, religion, education, and more that comprised the birth of the New Age movement. An influence on thinkers from Deepak Chopra to Al Gore, The Aquarian Conspiracy remains a thorough, detailed classic of contemporary thought—an impeccable document that traces one of the most powerful cultural movements of our age.

The Philosophers' Stone, Elixir of Life, Fountain of Youth, Ambrosia, Soma, Amrita, Nectar of Immortality. These are different names for the same thing. Throughout history this secret has been used by a very few to extend their lives hundreds of years in perfect health, with access to unlimited wealth, among many other miraculous properties. Some kept the secret because they understood that the time was not right for the secret to be free for all people, but most kept the secret out of their own jealousy, ignorance, egotism and corruption. The Stone's history and the history of the human race up until this day is a strange story full of secret societies, hooded cloaks, and mystical symbols. Such theatrics are childish and shallow. It's pointless to look for the light in the shadows...;"

Book excerpt: If, like me, you are a member of the so-called "Baby Boom" generation, and if, like me, you are still existing on the more desirable side of the sod, give yourself a heartfelt pat on the back. (This assuming, of course, that, unlike me, your arthritic shoulder joints will allow such a kinesiologically challenging movement.) You've earned this display of self-pride, in large measure, because you have survived-perhaps even thrived-during particularly turbulent times. You were born after the "war to end all wars," into one of the great feel-good periods in American history... And it's been pretty much downhill from there. Turns out that the War to End All Wars was actually a war-generator, powering numerous conflicts around the world-both hot and cold-during our tenure on the planet. We are the generation that sought shelter under our desks at school during nuke attack drills, prayed fervently for our lives as the Cuban missile crisis unfolded, saw a beloved President, charismatic civil rights leader, and presidential candidate succumb to assassins' bullets... And I'm not even out of the Sixties yet! I think you get my point: We've lived through many harrowing events during what was billed as the "Aquarian Age," the epoch on the astrological timeline characterized by relative harmony and well-being, during which humanity takes control of the Earth. We experienced relatively little of the harmonious stuff, as I recall, but we sure did take control of the planet! And I would propose that we essentially messed her up, to the point where Mother Nature herself would hardly recognize her home. But in spite of all that (or perhaps because of it) I find myself, at this point in my life, concentrating on what's been righteous during my stay here. Perhaps that's a product of the aging process: We tend to accentuate the positive as we age, while eliminating the negative as much as we are able. (A doctrine which, if followed religiously by humankind from day-one, would no doubt have yielded an infinitely better result here on Earth.)
