Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aftermath of War: An Account of the Repatriation of Boers and Natives in the Orange River Colony, 1902-1904 This volume is chiefly based on impressions gained in South Africa in the course of five years' service, from 1900 to 1904, firstly as an Intelligence, and secondly as a Repatriation Officer. By the courtesy of the Orange River Colony Administration, Government documents have been freely placed at my disposal for the purpose of its compilation. The account given is, however, in no sense of the word official, and I must accept entire responsibility for the conclusions drawn and the opinions expressed therein. The book has been written with a twofold object. On the one hand it is an attempt to describe not only the generosity and the liberality of the repatriation scheme, but also to indicate the exceptional difficulties under which that scheme was carried out. On the other hand it is an endeavour to vindicate those engaged in the task of repatriation from the charges of waste and extravagance which have been recklessly brought against them. I have not hesitated, however, to criticise very freely the department to which I had the honour to belong, and I have striven throughout to give a strictly impartial record of its work. This record is that of an eye-witness - of one whose impressions of the Dutch, however erroneous they may be, are based, not on hearsay, but on actual intercourse both in war and peace. Book excerpt: Only in recent years has the history of European colonial concentration camps in Africa—in which thousands of prisoners died in appalling conditions—become widely known beyond a handful of specialists. Although they preceded the Third Reich by many decades, the camps’ newfound notoriety has led many to ask to what extent they anticipated the horrors of the Holocaust. Were they designed for mass killing, a misbegotten attempt at modernization, or something else entirely? A Sad Fiasco confronts this difficult question head-on, reconstructing the actions of colonial officials in both British South Africa and German South-West Africa as well as the experiences of internees to explore both the similarities and the divergences between the African camps and their Nazi-era successors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South African War (1899–1902), also called the Boer War and Anglo-Boer War, began as a conventional conflict. It escalated into a savage irregular war fought between the two Boer republics and a British imperial force that adopted a scorched-earth policy and used concentration camps to break the will of Afrikaner patriots and Boer guerrillas. In An Imperfect Occupation , John Boje delves into the agonizing choices faced by Winburg district residents during the British occupation. Afrikaner men fought or evaded combat or collaborated; Afrikaner women fled over the veld or submitted to life in the camps; and black Africans weighed the life or death consequences of taking sides. Boje's sensitive analysis showcases the motives, actions, and reactions of Boers and Africans alike as initial British accommodation gave way to ruthlessness. Challenging notions of Boer unity and homogeneity, Boje illustrates the precarious tightrope of resistance, neutrality, and collaboration walked by people on all sides. He also reveals how the repercussions of the war's transformative effect on Afrikaner identity plays out in today's South Africa. Readable and compassionate, An Imperfect Occupation provides a dramatic account of the often overlooked aspects of one of the first "modern" wars.
