Sitting in one of the luxurious parlor cars of a New York express, we at last enjoyed a few quiet moments after the preceding days of bustle and ex citement. When the porter, after busying around, even placed a velvet cushion under my feet I was wishing that travel on the other side was as con venient, but I knew it was not. No place like America for travelling. The sun took a last peek a-boo look at us from the distant hill tops when we neared New York. Philadelphia is considered slow in comparison with New York but one of the first things we saw on arriving, was a horse-car plough ing along the street. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trip to Europe: Being Some Account of the Wanderings of a Small Family Party Caroline also gave her sister and me a very large, handsome basket of flowers, as well as each a fine box of Huyler's best and rarest candy, containing our favorite kind. Ialso received one from Mr. Egerton, a valued and long trusted employee and friend of my husband and the family. A floral ship was given Harriet, named after her daughters Laura Belle and Daisy, from her husband's gentle men friends. Mr. Simon presented each of us with large bouquets of roses. After admiring all these testimonials of love and friendship we went on deck, as the time was drawing near for the last good-bye and for the visitors to leave the pilgrims and the ship. After this the great vessel began to move, at first so slowly that it was hardly percep tible, amid the waving of handkerchiefs, etc. We gazed on the loved ones we were leaving with sadness, realizing all that might happen during our absence, and we continued to gaze until lost to sight and we were left to our fate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Europe in a Hurry After six years of incessant editorial labor, I found my self, on the 14th day of May, on the bosom of the Atlantic, in one of the Cunard steamers, seeking a temporary repose in the half leisure of a travel, Which is intended to be divided between my own enjoyment and service to my readers. I feel that I am entitled to this semi-holiday. My tasks have not only been unremitting, but severe and ardu ous, and without vanity, I think I can refer such of my read ers as may feel disposed to grumble at my temporary absence, to a list of services to the public and to them, Which should accredit me to a very liberal vacation. I am in hopes, however, to give full compensation for my privilege of excursion, by the arrangements Which Ishall make for their benefit; and in the observations Which I shall be able to transmit to them, as soon as I settle again into a writing trim. At present I hardly feel I am so and Will therefore content myself With such few preliminary features of my journey, as will serve the purpose of a prologue to succeed ing letters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses by Sea and Land: During a Six Months' Trip to Europe As I could, to single out the two dearest faces; several times I thought I was sure it was thine I saw, my precious, only sister, and raised my hand; but when the salutation was returned, and the form thus brought out more distinctly to view - lo! It was another's. Even this little thing made me feel sadder, and when I could no longer be sure I saw you even en masse, nor tell whether you had left the deck of the ship, I soon made the coolness of the air an excuse to go to our state-room, there to wait until I was brave enough to resolve to be cheerful, and enjoy all things that presented, which were lawful and convenient. My dear boys accompanied me as far as Truckee. In the face of the Sierra Nevada Mountains we bade each other farewell. In company with my friend, Mrs. T., I continued eastward. After a very pleasant but uneventful journey of four days, we arrived in New York City, where I was greeted by my beloved children - Emma, Blanche, Sigmund, and Frank. I remained there fourteen days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from "Beatty's Tour in Europe," in Foreign Lands: Or "Europe as I Saw It" It has always been my desire to view the scenes celebrated for their antiquity and renown, to gaze upon the sepulchres of Kings, the crumbling ruins of ancient palaces, to breath, amid the towering summit of the Alps, the air where majestic sublimity reigns supreme; or deep in subterranean caverns of the earth, look upon the sarcophagus of Prophets, Priests and Kings, and, approaching, read hieroglyphics that still withstand the shock of time. All these mighty antiquities of ancient renown lay enshrined in traditions whose origin is lost in the dust of centuries. To me, the iron finger of time traces, amid the ashes and debris of ages, lessons written in an imperishable language: "Day unto day uttereth speech And night unto night showeth forth knowledge." Lessons which all the nations of the earth can read, teaching mankind the immutability of our great Creator, and immortality of the soul. "For though Heaven and Earth pass away, The word of the Lord endureth forever." To you, dear friends, I trust they may awaken the same emotions, and to whom I present these pages as a slight memento of my regard and esteem. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Half-Hours of Travel at Home and Abroad: Europe Three times Elizabeth was his guest. Her last visit was in July, 1575, and lasted seventeen days. Of the festivi ties and princely entertainments he prepared for her on this occasion Sir Walter Scott has written with all that natural enthusiasm and predilection with which, perhaps, above all other English novelists, he dilated upon such a subject. His graphic descriptions of these scenes are so familiar to the million that I will not venture to go behind his brilliant fictions in search of actual historical facts of duller interest. The day of such favorites has gone by, like the beauty and glory of this once gorgeous fabric. The sun of Christian morality and civilization has risen to a purer ood of light, and such broad-faced gallant ries would now be looked out of countenance in high places. The facing Of the massive and lofty Caesar's Tower must be nearly three centuries old, and it is wonderfully perfect. The perpendicular lines from base to battlement are as straight as if the walls were run in a mould; the eye can not detect a de ection of a hair's breadth, nor has time been able to eat into the smooth and even surface. I noticed, however, that the brave old ivy green, which braids such bandages for the wounds made by time and human violence in abbeys and castles, had wound around the front of this huge tower such a thick spread that it had deadened the skin of the wall and was eating into the solid body of it like a caustic blister. There were men at work on tall ladders, removing this thick green bandage and letting the sun in upon the stone, which had not seen its light for years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lure and the Lore of Travel If you do not believe in turning a European trip into a bore, resumed the Merry Widow, I am ready to listen to any and all your sug gestions, but if I had intended to make work of travel, I would have stayed at home. On one's first impressionistic foreign tour, I replied, I am inclined to favor, as a method of travel, the way hedgehogs are said to eat their grapes, that is, rolling over in them and eating those that stick to their quills. If ineli nation be ever the best guide, surely it is on a journey in search of an answer to the essentially personal question what does Europe mean to me? Bravo, cried the Merry Widow, clapping her little white hands enthusiastically. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It closes a series of personal and literary experiences which cannot be renewed, and which I have no belief will be extended. Now, therefore, all that I have done as a traveller detaches itself from my other labors, lies clear behind me as a life by itself, and may be considered with a degree of self-criticism which was scarcely possible while it lay nearer. The brief review which I desire to make, must necessarily be autobiograph ical in its character, and I am aware that this is question able ground. But as I have been specially styled, for so many years and little to my own satisfaction, a traveller or a tourist, and in either character have received praise and blame, equally founded on a misconception of the facts and hopes of my life, I claim the privilege, this once, to set the truth before those who may care to hear it.
