Instead, she helps students navigate the world of literature and gives them time to read books they pick out themselves. Her love of books and teaching is both infectious and inspiring. In the book, you’ll find: Hands-on strategies for managing and improving your own school library Tactics for helping students walk on their own two feet and continue the reading habit after they’ve finished with your class Data from student surveys and end-of-year feedback that proves how well the Miller Method works The Book Whisperer includes a dynamite list of recommended "kid lit" that helps parents and teachers find the books that students really like to read.

Understanding and striving for happiness while living with that pain is a personal endeavour. This story explores Marla's journey of childhood trauma, how a 'normal' life may not be as normal as it seems, and how one person's reality can be very different from another's. Acknowledging the existence of problems is the first step towards healing.

Book excerpt: In contemporary western societies, there are increasing emphases on children being the responsibility of their parents, contained within the home, and on their compartmentalisation into separate and protected organised educational settings. Thus 'home' and 'school' form a crucial part of children's lives and experiences. This book explores the key institutional settings of home and school, and other educationally linked organised spaces, in children's lives, and the relationships between these. It presents in-depth discussions concerning new research findings from a range of national contexts and focuses on various aspects of children's, and sometimes adult's, own understandings and activities in home and school, and after school settings, and the relationship between these. The contributors assess children from a variety of backgrounds and circumstances and consider how these children see and position themselves as autonomous within, connected to or regulated by home and school. Discussion of the impact of policy and practice developments on the everyday lives of these children is also included.

Book excerpt: Empowering Students Through Multilingual and Content Discourse is a peer-reviewed research book that challenges the traditional monolingual classroom approach, where the teacher's voice dominates and only the dominant culture's language is considered the path to success. The book aims to empower students by creating classroom spaces where all voices are heard, valued, and empowered. It draws on research from scholars who study discourse and offers insights into how discourse can be used to promote language and literacy development, honor all students' voices, and empower them. This book also provides guidance on culturally and linguistically sustaining discourse practices and encourages educators to incorporate students' home languages and discourse practices in classroom instruction. It challenges educators to move away from centering White English and represent language more responsibly within the classroom. This research is a valuable resource for academic scholars and a useful tool for teachers looking to cultivate student-centered classroom practices. By encouraging discourse among students, educators can create a space where human life holds meaning, and students feel empowered to act and use their voices.

Book excerpt: Antifascism After Hitler investigates the antifascist stories, memory sites and youth reception that were critical to the success of political education in East German schools and extracurricular activities. As the German Democratic Republic (GDR) promoted national identity and socialist consciousness, two of the most potent historical narratives to permeate youth education became tales of communist resistors who fought against fascism and the heroic deeds of the Red Army in World War II. These stories and iconic images illustrate the message that was presented to school-age children and adolescents in stages as they advanced through school and participated in the official communist youth organizations and other activities. This text delivers the first comprehensive study of youth antifascism in the GDR, extending scholarship beyond the level of the state to consider the everyday contributions of local institutions and youth mentors responsible for conveying stories and commemorative practices to generations born during WWII and after the defeat of fascism. While the government sought to use educators and former resistance fighters as ideological shock troops, it could not completely dictate how these stories would be told, with memory intermediaries altering at times the narrative and message. Using a variety of primary sources including oral history interviews, the author also assesses how students viewed antifascism, with reactions ranging from strong identification to indifference and dissent. Antifascist education and commemoration were never simply state-prescribed and were not as "participation-less" as some scholars and contemporary observers claim, even as educators fought a losing battle to maintain enthusiasm.

Drawing on and including examples of good practice from across the country, Making it work for children with complex health care needs illustrates the ways in which all agencies can work together to develop local policies and procedures to ensure that the needs of this group of children are met in a coordinated and child-centred way. Making it work for children with complex health care needs is one of two companion publications detailing good practice in both inclusive and specialist settings across education, health, social care and leisure.
