Book excerpt: Federal and state regulations prescribe design requirements for low permeability clay landfill liners based on saturated hydraulic conductivity. The assumption that clay liners are saturated for the duration of their life is a simplification of the true processes at work. The fact that clay liners are compacted to optimum, or just wet of optimum, proves that they are initially subject to unsaturated conditions, and it is well known that liners can remain variably saturated for the duration of their life. Furthermore laboratory measurements of saturated hydraulic conductivity are generally based on water as pore fluid. While this is appropriate for landfill cover liners, leaching effects may drastically change pore fluid chemistry as water moves through the landfill to the bottom liner. Since many of the mechanical properties of clay soils are closely related to the water-retention characteristics of the soil mass; and since the latter is a function of the mineralogy, pore fluid chemistry, fabric and structure of the soil mass; any change of the pore fluid chemistry may lead to a removal of existing bonds and therefore an alteration of the internal equilibrium stability of the soil mass. In this study the goal is to determine the effect of modeling two different pore fluids - leachate and water. This research uses an approach that critically assesses how leachate will move through a landfill bottom liner differently than water.

Download or read book Anaerobic Digestion Processes written by Nigel Horan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-18 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents new application processes in the context of anaerobic digestion (AD), such as phosphorus recovery, microbial fuel cells (MFCs), and seaweed digestion. In addition, it introduces a new technique for the modeling and optimization of AD processes. Chapters 1 and 2 review AD as a technique for converting a range of organic wastes into biogas, while Chapter 3 discusses the recovery of phosphorus from anaerobically digested liquor. Chapters 4 and 5 focus on new techniques for modeling and optimizing AD. Chapters 6 and 7 then describe the state of the art in AD effluent treatment. The book’s final three chapters focus on more recent developments, including microbial fuel cells (MFCs) (Chapter 8), seaweed production (Chapter 9), and enzyme technologies (Chapter 10).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Attenuation of Pollutants in Municipal Landfill Leachate by Clay Minerals, Vol. 1: Column Leaching and Field Verification Leachate reduced the hydraulic conductivity of the columns during the laboratory experiments. A similar change in hydraulic conductivity was not clearly shown in the field data but probably exists. A ranking system was developed for evaluating the relative pollu tion hazard for municipal leachates. The new ranking method overcomes the problems found in a method for rating hazardous wastes that was previously proposed to the u.s. Environmental Protection Agency. The results of the study suggest that over-all pollution from land fill leachate would be reduced if landfill liners of earth materials were designed for higher hydraulic conductivity. Properly designed liners would selectively attenuate the toxic pollutants from the leachate and allow the ground water to dilute the nontoxic components that can be tolerated without harmful effects at much higher concentrations. This book was released on 2007-09-22 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: President Carter's 1980 declaration of a state of emergency at Love Canal, New York, recognized that residents' health had been affected by nearby chemical waste sites. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, enacted in 1976, ushered in a new era of waste management disposal designed to protect the public from harm. It required that modern waste containment systems use "engineered" barriers designed to isolate hazardous and toxic wastes and prevent them from seeping into the environment. These containment systems are now employed at thousands of waste sites around the United States, and their effectiveness must be continually monitored. Assessment of the Performance of Engineered Waste Containment Barriers assesses the performance of waste containment barriers to date. Existing data suggest that waste containment systems with liners and covers, when constructed and maintained in accordance with current regulations, are performing well thus far. However, they have not been in existence long enough to assess long-term (postclosure) performance, which may extend for hundreds of years. The book makes recommendations on how to improve future assessments and increase confidence in predictions of barrier system performance which will be of interest to policy makers, environmental interest groups, industrial waste producers, and industrial waste management industry.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Attenuation of Pollutants in Municipal Landfill Leachate by Clay Minerals, Vol. 2: Heavy-Metal Adsorption The accumulation of these potentially toxic heavy metals in soils makes long-term application of municipal leachates to the land hazardous, be cause heavy metals enter the human food chain by accumulating in plants. How ever, a lack of basic data on the reactions of these metal ions with soil col loids in the presence of a complex solution matrix, such as leachate, has ham pered efforts to determine what levels of application can be tolerated without degradation or loss of the soil for food crop production.
