Book Synopsis Letter to the Americans by : Jean Cocteau
Download or read book Letter to the Americans written by Jean Cocteau and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like Alexis de Tocqueville a century earlier, Jean Cocteau offers a powerful reminder to Americans of their own potential—and issues In 1949, Jean Cocteau spent twenty days in New York, and began composing on the plane ride home this essay filled with the vivid impressions of his trip. With his unmistakable prose and graceful wit, he compares and contrasts French and American culture: the different values they place on art, literature, liberty, psychology, and dreams. Cocteau sees the incredibly buoyant hopes in America’s promise, while at the same time warning of the many ills that the nation will have to confront—its hypocrisy, sexism, racism, and hegemonic aspirations—in order to realize this potential. Never before translated into English, Letter to the Americans remains as timely and urgent as when it was first published in France over seventy years ago.

Book Synopsis The Timewaster Letters by : Robin Cooper
Download or read book The Timewaster Letters written by Robin Cooper and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A uniquely British twist on the goofy letters-to-strangers genre, this brilliant compilation chronicles one man's outrageous and bizarre letters--to trade groups, department stores, clubs, political parties, and a certain children's book publisher--and the amazing responses he received to his ideas, observations, and unsolicited feedback. Asking countless questions, such as Would the Campaign for Courtesy be interested in his 10-Point Plan for a Courteous Britain? Could the Ball & Roller Bearing Manufacturers Association contact his "ball-bearing mad" son to suggest that he scale back his 95,000-piece collection? and Might Madame Tussaud's be interested in creating a wax likeness of him in a toga?, the book reveals the courteous and often bemused correspondence between the imaginative time waster and his unsuspecting targets, all of whom only encouraged him further. Hilarious and off-the-wall, this volume will have fellow schemers laughing out loud--and reaching for their pens.

Book Synopsis Writing in Our Time by : Pauline Butling
Download or read book Writing in Our Time written by Pauline Butling and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2009-10-22 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Process poetics is about radical poetry — poetry that challenges dominant world views, values, and aesthetic practices with its use of unconventional punctuation, interrupted syntax, variable subject positions, repetition, fragmentation, and disjunction. To trace the aesthetically and politically radical poetries in English Canada since the 1960s, Pauline Butling and Susan Rudy begin with the “upstart” poets published in Vancouver’s TISH: A Poetry Newsletter, and follow the trajectory of process poetics in its national and international manifestations through the 1980s and ’90s. The poetics explored include the works of Nicole Brossard, Daphne Martlatt, bpNichol, George Bowering, Roy Kiyooka, and Frank Davey in the 1960s and ’70s. For the 1980-2000 period, the authors include essays on Jeff Derksen, Clare Harris, Erin Mour, and Lisa Robertson. They also look at books by older authors published after 1979, including Robin Blaser, Robert Kroetsch, and Fred Wah. A historiography of the radical poets, and a roster of the little magazines, small press publishers, literary festivals, and other such sites that have sustained poetic experimentation, provide context.

Book Synopsis Avant Desire: A Nicole Brossard Reader by : Nicole Brossard
Download or read book Avant Desire: A Nicole Brossard Reader written by Nicole Brossard and published by Coach House Books. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive survey of an essential feminist poet. In June 2019, Nicole Brossard was awarded the Lifetime Recognition Award from the Griffin Poetry Trust. Rarely has a prize been so richly deserved. For five decades she has writing ground-breaking poetry, fiction, and criticism in French that has always been steadfastly and unashamedly feminist and lesbian. Avant Desire moves through Brossard’s body of work with a playful attentiveness to its ongoing lines of inquiry. Like her work, this reader moves beyond conventional textual material to include ephemera, interviews, marginalia, lectures, and more. Just as Brossard foregrounds collaboration, this book includes new translations alongside canonical ones and intertextual and responsive work from a variety of artist translators at various stages of their careers. Through their selections, the editors trace Brossard’s fusion of lesbian feminist desire with innovation, experimentation, and activism, emphasizing the more overtly political nature of her early work and its transition into performative thinking. Devotees of Brossard will be invigorated by the range of previously unavailable materials included here, while new readings will find a thread of inquiry that is more than a mere introduction to her complex body of work. Avant Desire situates Brossard’s thinking across her oeuvre as that of a writer whose sights are always cast toward the horizon.
