Book excerpt: Duke's Great Escape is the first book in the series The Adventures of Duke. All of the stories in the series are based on true events. As a young boy, Duke and I grew up in the small coal mining town of Crumpler, West Virginia. We lived in the beautiful mountains of southern West Virginia with open country allowing us to do a lot of exploring together. Our exploring expeditions would be spent walking through the woods in the mountains enjoying all that nature had to offer. We would see different kinds of trees and plants such as maple trees, oak trees, black walnut trees, cherry trees, mountain laurel and rhododendron. We also saw different kinds of wildlife as we would journey through the mountains. We especially enjoyed sitting on a creek bank listening to the running water while watching nature at its best. Duke and I spent time with each other over the years and became inseparable. Duke truly was this boy's best friend. My hope is that every book will bring laughter and smiles to each reader both parents and child alike. Happy reading and keep a look out for all of the Adventures of Duke. Ruff! Ruff!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few American artists in any medium have enjoyed the international and lasting cultural impact of Duke Ellington. From jazz standards such as “Mood Indigo” and “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” to his longer, more orchestral suites, to his leadership of the stellar big band he toured and performed with for decades after most big bands folded, Ellington represented a singular, pathbreaking force in music over the course of a half-century. At the same time, as one of the most prominent black public figures in history, Ellington demonstrated leadership on questions of civil rights, equality, and America’s role in the world. With Duke Ellington’s America, Harvey G. Cohen paints a vivid picture of Ellington’s life and times, taking him from his youth in the black middle class enclave of Washington, D.C., to the heights of worldwide acclaim. Mining extensive archives, many never before available, plus new interviews with Ellington’s friends, family, band members, and business associates, Cohen illuminates his constantly evolving approach to composition, performance, and the music business—as well as issues of race, equality and religion. Ellington’s own voice, meanwhile, animates the book throughout, giving Duke Ellington’s America an intimacy and immediacy unmatched by any previous account. By far the most thorough and nuanced portrait yet of this towering figure, Duke Ellington’s America highlights Ellington’s importance as a figure in American history as well as in American music.

Book excerpt: Mark Twain's classic novels, 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' and 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,' are two quintessential works of American literature that have left a lasting impact on readers for generations. These timeless stories explore the trials and tribulations of young boys navigating the complexities of life in the mid-19th century Mississippi River region. Twain's use of descriptive language and witty dialogue capture the essence of childhood innocence, mischief, and the ever-present theme of freedom. Through the adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, Twain masterfully weaves together themes of morality, loyalty, and the struggle between societal expectations and personal beliefs. These novels are not only entertaining but also thought-provoking, inviting readers to reflect on the universal truths found within the pages. Mark Twain's own experiences growing up in the South and working as a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River undoubtedly influenced his writing, allowing him to authentically portray the setting and characters in his novels. With his keen eye for detail and satirical wit, Twain crafts a compelling narrative that continues to resonate with readers of all ages. I highly recommend 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' and 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' to anyone seeking a captivating and richly crafted literary experience.
