Book excerpt: Guy Grieve's life was going nowhere - trapped in a job he hated, commuting 2,000 miles a month and up to his neck in debt. But he dreamed of escaping it all to live alone in one of the wildest, most remote places on earth - Alaska. And just when he'd given up hope, the dream came true. Suddenly Guy was thrown into one of the harshest environments in the world, miles from the nearest human being and armed with only the most basic equipment. And he soon found - whether building a log cabin from scratch, hunting, ice fishing or of course dodging bears in the buff - that life in the wilderness was anything but easy... Part Ray Mears, part Bill Bryson, CALL OF THE WILD is the gripping story of how a mild-mannered commuter struggled with the elements - and himself - and eventually learned the ways of the wild.

Book Synopsis The Tenderfoot Bride by : Cheryl St. John
Download or read book The Tenderfoot Bride written by Cheryl St. John and published by Harlequin. This book was released on 2010-12-27 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweet Western romance from the beloved author with “a style reminiscent of LaVyrle Spencer’s earliest books” (Linda Howard, New York Times–bestselling author of The Woman Left Behind). Secrets and lies made poor references, Linnea McConaughy knew. But her survival depended upon keeping her past hidden, especially from her employer, rancher Will Tucker. True, he’d shown her kindness, even tenderness, but could he ever accept her shameful past—and another man’s baby? Will Tucker did not like surprises, and Linnea McConaughy was not the sturdy, past-her-prime widow he’d expected to manage his household. Instead, she was a tiny slip of womanhood desperately seeking a place to belong. Yet much to his growing surprise, that place seemed to be in his home—and his heart! Praise for Cheryl St. John “Cheryl St. John gives testimony to the blessings of family and to the healing powers of love.” —Romantic Times “A warm and loving story.” —Romance Reviews Today

Bill Norton might be new to Ketchikan but he's no tenderfoot. In fact, he's one of the sharpest FBI agents this side of the Yukon--savvy, tough and resourceful. Norton's come to this rough-and-tumble town to look into a case of a missing person--his own boss--who vanished investigating a heroin smuggling operation. What Norton finds is a string of corpses, a gallery of rogues, and a fleet of fishing boats that specialize in red herrings. He also finds himself warming up to the heart-stopping halibut heiress Elaine Halloway. But is Elaine mixed up in the heroin trade ... or a victim of it? To find the truth Norton will have to make living men sweat--and dead men talk. Because every body fished out of the icy waters has a story to tell, and it will take all of Norton's CSI-like skills to squeeze it out of them. The action crackles and the romance sizzles as The Chee-Chalker puts you on the case in a place where the suspense is murder. Book Synopsis Rebels in the Rockies by : Walter Earl Pittman
Download or read book Rebels in the Rockies written by Walter Earl Pittman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War in 1861 found Southerners a minority throughout the West. Early efforts to create military forces were quickly suppressed. Many returned to the South to fight while others remained where they were, forming a potentially disloyal population. Underground movements existed throughout the war in Colorado, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona and even Idaho. Repeatedly betrayed and overwhelmed by Union forces and without communications with the South, these groups were ineffective. In southern New Mexico, Southerners, who were the majority, aligned themselves with the Confederacy. Four small companies of irregulars, one Hispanic, fought (effectively) as part of the abortive Confederate invasion force of 1861-2. The most famous of these, the "Brigands," were close in function to a modern special forces unit. In 1862 the Brigands were sent into Colorado to join up with a secret army of 600-1,000 men massing there, but were betrayed. Returning to Texas, the Brigands and the other irregulars were used for special operations in the West throughout the War; they also fought in the Louisiana-Arkansas campaigns of 1863-4.
Book Synopsis North Pole Tenderfoot by : Doug Hall
Download or read book North Pole Tenderfoot written by Doug Hall and published by Clerisy Press. This book was released on 2010-02-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would Doug Hall follow in Robert Peary's 1909 sled tracks to the North Pole, despite the grueling terrain and temperatures between 15 and 62 degrees below zero? His goal was to resurrect the spirit of Peary's journey in a world increasingly driven by instant gratification, short term business focus, and lack of sustained dedication to great causes. Peary succeeded where some 578 expeditions before him had failed. North Pole Tenderfoot is Doug's attempt to let the reader experience what is possible when one does what Peary did: think big.
